Ask a person to name the worst crime in living memory, and the Holocaust will probably be what they come up with.
Ask them to name the worst crime scene of the Holocaust, and Auschwitz is the natural answer.
Ask a person who knew that camp what the worst part of it was, and the killing center at Birkenau will be the answer.
Ask a survivor of Birkenau to name the most terrifying murderer in the whole complex, and they’ll give you the name of Dr. Josef Mengele.
Josef Mengele, born 16 March 1911 was a German officer and physician in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.
Mengele was a notorious member of the team of doctors responsible for the selection of victims to be killed in the gas chambers and for performing deadly human experiments on prisoners.
He joined the Nazi Party in 1937 and the SS in 1938.
Initially assigned as a battalion medical officer at the start of World War II, he transferred to the concentration camp service in early 1943 and was assigned to Auschwitz.
There he saw the opportunity to conduct genetic research on human subjects.
His subsequent experiments, focusing primarily on twins, dwarves,, and had no regard for the health or safety of the victims.
So called camp doctors, especially the notorious Josef Mengele, would torture Jewish children, Gypsy children and many others. "Patients" were put into pressure chambers, tested with drugs, castrated, frozen to death, and exposed to various other traumas.

At Auschwitz extermination was conducted on an industrial scale with three million persons eventually killed through gassing, starvation, shooting, and burning.
Josef Mengele was the chief provider for the gas chambers. He was liscenced to kill, maim, gas, dissect, and carry out various experiment on his victims.
Murders, brutalities, cruelties, tortures, atrocities, and other inhuman acts were an everyday occurrence as a result of these experiments.
Mengele performed both physical and psychological experiments, experimental surgeries performed without anesthesia, transfusions of blood from one twin to another, isolation endurance, reaction to various stimuli.
He made injections with lethal germs, sex change operations, the removal oforgans and limbs, incestuous impregnations.
When it was reported that one block was infected with lice, Mengele solved the problem by gassing the lice together with the 750 women assigned to the block.
Mengele did a number of medical experiments of unspeakable horror at Auschwitz, using twins.
it's estimated that he examined around 3,000.
These twins as young as five years of age were usually sewn together, murdered after the experiment was over, and their bodies dissected.
Once Mengele's assistant rounded up 14 pairs of Gypsy twins during the night.
Mengele placed them on his polished marble dissection table and putthem to sleep. He then proceeded to inject chloroform into their hearts, killing them instantaneously.
Mengele then began dissecting and meticulously noting each and every piece of the twins' bodies.
At Auschwitz Mengele did a number of twin studies, and these twins were usually murdered after the experiment was over and their bodies dissected.
He supervised an operation by which two Gypsy children were sewn together to create Siamses twins; the hands of the children became badly infected where the veins had been resected.
Mengele regularly performed surgery without anaesthetic and would obtain bodies to work on simply by injecting chloroform into inmates' hearts while they slept, which would kill them in seconds.
Pregnant women were also singled out, he was known to have performed vivisections on them before consigning them to the death chambers.
Freezing Experiments.
To investigate the most effective means of treating persons who had been severely chilled or frozen.
The victims were forced to remain in a tank of ice water for up to 3 hours.
Extreme rigor developed in a short time.
Numerous victims died in the course of these experiments. After the survivors were severely chilled, rewarming was attempted by various means.
In another series of experiments, the victims were kept Unclad outdoors for many hours at temperatures below freezing.
The victims screamed with pain as their bodies froze.
Sea-water Experiments.
To study various methods of making sea water drinkable. The victims were deprived of all food and given only chemically processed sea water. Such experiments caused great pain and suffering and resulted in serious bodily injury to the victims.
Malaria Experiments.
To investigate immunization for and treatment of malaria. The victims were infected by mosquitoes or by injections of extracts of the mucous glands of mosquitoes. After having contracted malaria the victims were treated with various drugs to test their relative efficacy. Over 1,000 victims were used in these experiments. Many died and others suffered severe pain and permanent disability.
Mustard Gas Experiments.
To investigate the most effective treatment of wounds caused by Mustard gas. Wounds deliberately inflicted on the victims were infected with Mustard gas. Some of the victims died as a result of these experiments and others suffered intense pain and injury.
Sulfanilamide Experiments.
To investigate the effectiveness of sulfanilamide. Wounds deliberately inflicted on the victims were infected with bacteria such as streptococcus, gas gangrene, and tetanus. Circulation of blood was interrupted by tying off blood vessels at both ends of the wound to create a condition similar to that of a battlefield wound. Infection was aggravated by forcing wood shavings and ground glass into the wounds. The infection was treated with sulfanilamide and other drugs to determine their effectiveness. Many victims died as a result of these experiments and others suffered serious injury and intense agony.
Spotted Fever (Typhus) Experiments.
to investigate the effectiveness of spotted fever and other vaccines. Numerous victims were deliberately infected with spotted fever virus in order to keep the virus alive - over 90 percent of the victims died as a result.
Experiments with Poison.
to investigate the effect of various poisons upon human beings. The poisons were secretly administered to the victims in their food. The victims died as a result of the poison or were killed immediately in order to permit autopsies. In or about September 1944 the victims were shot with poison bullets and suffered torture and death.
Women were injected with petrol, infected with syphilis and raped by their liberators.
he full extent of his gruesome work will never be known because the records he sent to his mentor were shipped out in two truck loads.
Any remaining notes Mengele carried with him on his escape to South America and those were never found.
Josef Mengele fled Auschwitz disguised as a member of the regular German infantry before liberation.
He became one of the wanted men after WWII for war crimes.
Fifteen doctors were found guilty, and eight were acquitted.
