With the threat of a German invasion, all around the United Kingdom, defences were bolstered and plans were drawn up to counter an invasion.
Defesive lines sprang into action in order to hinder, harrass and slow any enemy advance. These defences were mainly in the form of re-enforced bunkers and gun emplacements, normaly along naturally occuring obstacles, such as rivers, canals and other natural landmarks / chokepoints.
Pill boxes as they were termed dotted the countryside. Although never used, these defensive positions stood, lasting the test of time to this present day.
Take a country walk in either the Southern or Eastern part of the UK and you will be sure to find one of these strange constructions. Forunately, this one was open for exploration, many though are either sealed off, locked or have been converted into sanctuaries for bats.
Many different types were built, ranging from the Type 22 Pillbox to the Type 28 Pillbox.
Here, we have the Type 22 Pillbox, with its signature Hexagonal design and its inner blast wall feature and all-round defensive posture.
Looking out you can gain some perspective on the mood from within and the arcs of fire in which it afforded you.
Luckily a lot of these still exist for us to explore and enjoy, pondering what could have happened.
Enjoy... The exploration continues.
