So last night was the historic first ever WWE Woman's Royal Rumble match. If you are looking for a review of the match itself, then my friend I am afraid that you are in the wrong place.
Im not here to discuss the lack of use of one Nikki Cross or the over use of nostalgia acts to pad the numbers for the match.
No. I'm here to talk about Ronda Rousey. The former UFC champ made her debut last night after Asuka won the first woman's rumble, and the results were...baffling.
Just as Asuka was about to hopefully choose which champion she would face at Wrestlemania, you know, that match that she EARNED, out comes Rousey, wearing "Rowdy" Roddy Piper's old jacket, to look at the women in the ring and then VERY awkwardly point at the Wrestlemania sign. Which is in every performers contract from here till the showcase of the immortals.
There wasn't really much of a pop when she came out, which made Stephanie look very puzzled to say the least.
Look, I just think that trying to throw someone into a pseudo main event spot, on the biggest show of the year when she hasn't had a single match. Something similar happened not too long ago...
CM Punk made the transition from WWE to UFC and despite never having any kind of amateur background, trained and was given a main event level entry into the world of Mixed Martial Arts. All because of his name. The above result proves bad things happen when people aren't prepared.
I know Ronda is a great athlete, but shes a very subpar actor and to make it in the world of pro wrestling you need charisma. Its just a prerequisite
So unless she's got tons of experience as a pro wrestler somewhere buried in that big jacket of hers, I really think this was a bad idea. Plus, having her come out at the end of such a historic match, really buried the fact that Asuka won. No one is talking about that, they are all talking about Ronda.
Which is probably what WWE wants anyway...
