Okay the title might seem a little ironical. Although i really believe we can get something going here, so bear with me :)
YouTube is failing its content producers for a long time now. Fair Use of content recieves strikes for copyright infringements.
There are lots of examples that perfectly demonstrate how baseless YouTube demonetises or outright blocks content, ranging from a guy doing Burger King reviews, to Reaction Videos.
Pewdiepie, the YouTuber with the most subscribers is also affected for bogus reasons.
“No more swearing, no more sexual jokes and definitely no more Hitler jokes,” PewDiePie says. “I wish I was joking, I’m not. It seems that YouTube has made some changes and about a third of my videos have become demonetized. I’m going to have to be family friendly from now on so I don’t go homeless."
After tightening the rules on what content is fit for advertisement back in 2017 a lot of videos were demonetized in hindsight across the whole platform, resulting in a decline in revenue for a whole lot of channels.
Political discourse is increasingly cencosred or demonetised, mostly right leaning content is affected. Criticism of political organisations or expression of classical conservative ideas being affected is just the tip of the iceberg. No matter how controversial or extreme an idea is, one should be able to voice it. The principle of free speech is meant to protect speech that is controversial and outside of public consensus.
In an effort to bring more good content to steemit, we need to raise awareness for the platform. If all the people affected by YouTubes ad policies knew of steemit, they surely would give it a try. This would easily generate another stream of income for them and provide promotional value to steemit.
Petititons might be a good way to show the rather big YouTubers to that content like theirs is in demand on steemit.
I came up with a list of channels that were targeted and would be a great addition to the platform. If not for the ideas or values they hold, then at least for being able to discuss or debunk them in a censorship free environment. Disagree with anything they say? Great, publicly point out their flaws. Everyone wins.
Pewdiepieruns the biggest YouTube Channel
Ben Shapiro,a classical conservative
Count Dankula, the man facing jail time for having a nazi pug
Lauren Southern, a transgender conservative and supposed terrorist
Dave Rubin, runs The Rubin Report
Ezra Levant, head of right wing Rebel Media
Nuance Bro, neutral interviewer at political events
Whether you agree with the opinions voiced in their videos or not, if you believe in free speech, this should bother you.
Giving institutions or such big companies the power to affect the public opinion on this scale is dangerous.
The political climate can change and target left leaning content as result. Whether it´s faulty algorithms or biased human intervention, steemits distributed curation system is more fit to allow for free speech, discussion and curation of content than YouTube ever could.
These are just examples I know of, I do not neccessarily endorse any of the opinions expressed by the people listed here.
Happy to add more people to the list, no matter how controversial they may be .Feel free to come up with a custom text for a petition you especially care about. :)
