## English Hello, friends! Last time I told you about my trip to [Grodno](https://ecency.com/hive-163772/@oleftinochka/eng-and-ru-grodno-belarus). On the same day, we visited another city in Belarus - Lida.

The main purpose of the visit to Lida was **the Lida Castle** - the oldest and most besieged Belarusian castle that has survived to this day. Its construction began in 1323, when the city of Lida was part of the Lithuanian Duchy, by order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gedimin. The purpose of the castle was to protect the town from Crusaders. During its existence Gedimin's castle survived invasions not only of Crusaders, but also of the army of duke Svidrigailo, detachments of Crimean Tatars, Swedes, Smolensk and Moscow dukes, and the army of Tadeusz Kosciuszko. At the end of the XIX century the Lida Castle was badly damaged by the fire, after which the local inhabitants actually started to take it apart for bricks. In the XX century restoration works were carried out. However, the fundamental restoration began only in 2006. It's now almost complete.

Основной целью посещения Лиды стал **Лидский замок** - самый старый и самый осаждавшийся белорусский замок, дошедший до наших дней. Его строительство началось в 1323 году, когда город Лида входил в состав Литовского княжества, по приказу великого князя литовского Гедимина. Целью постройки была защита от нападений крестоносцев. Замок Гедимина за время своего существования пережил нашествия не только крестоносцев, но и армии князя Свидригайло, отрядов крымских татар, шведов, смоленских и московских князей, а также войск Тадеуша Костюшко. В конце XIX века Лидский замок сильно пострадал от пожара, после которого его фактически начали разбирать на кирпичи местные жители. В XX веке проводились попытки реставрационных работ. Однако, основательная реставрация началась только в 2006 году. На данный момент она практически завершена.

The Lida Castle is a typical representative of defensive architecture, built in the shape of an irregular quadrangle and with only two watchtowers placed diagonally on the corners. The southwest tower was built under Gedimin, the northeast one under Vitovt. After visiting the famous castles in Mir and Nesvizh, the external ascetic appearance of the Lida castle did not impress me so much.

Лидский замок является типичным представителем оборонительного зодчества, построен в виде неправильного четырехугольника и имеет всего две сторожевые башни, размещенные по диагонали на углах. Юго-западная башня построена при Гедимине, северо-восточная – при Витовте [[1]](https://my-best-travel.ru/lidskij-zamok-belarus/). После посещения знаменитых замков в Мире и Несвиже внешний аскетический облик Лидского замка меня не так сильно впечатлил.

As we arrived in Lida in the evening, we were unable to get inside the castle. But I took a picture through the gate. Although the castle has been partially restored and has acquired a more modern look, it still has a real medieval spirit. The courtyard has wooden buildings, old wells and a drawbridge. In the wintertime there is an ice rink and in the summertime there are fire shows, knights' tournaments, festivals and other events. The towers of the castle house a museum exhibition about life in the Middle Ages.

Поскольку мы приехали в Лиду уже вечером, попасть внутрь замка нам не удалось. Но я сделала фото сквозь ворота. Несмотря на то, что замок был частично восстановлен и приобрёл более современный облик, в нём всё ещё ощущается настоящий дух средневековья. Во внутреннем дворике размещаются деревянные постройки, сохранились старинные колодцы, а также подъёмный мост. Зимой здесь заливают каток, а летом проводят фаер-шоу, рыцарские турниры, фестивали и другие мероприятия. В башнях замка находится музейная экспозиция, посвященная жизни людей в Средневековье [[2]](https://www.hata.by/articles/lidskij_zamok-9261/).

Next to the castle is **a monument to Gedimin**, the founder of the city.

Рядом с замком установлен **памятник Гедимину** - основателю города.

Nearby is **the Church of the Holy Cross**. It was built in the 1970s in the 18th century in Vilna baroque style.

Неподалеку находится **Крестовоздвиженский костел**. Он был построен в 70-х годах XVIII века в стиле виленского барокко.

In a small park next to the church there is **a monument to Francysk Skaryna** - the Belarusian and East Slavic first printer, scientist, philosopher-enlightener. He's the greatest historical figure of the XV-XVI centuries, originally from the Belarusian city of Polotsk.

В небольшом сквере рядом с костелом находится **памятник Франциску Скорине** - белорусскому и восточнославянскому первопечатнику, ученому, философу-просветителю. Он является величайшим историческим деятелем XV-XVI веков, родом из белорусского города Полоцк.

In the same park is **a stone erected to commemorate the founding of Lida**. On one side is an engraved coat of arms and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gedimin's will to his son is written in Old Slavonic, while on the other is information about the founding of the town written in Belarusian.

В этом же сквере располагается **камень, установленный в честь основания Лиды**. С одной стороны выгравирован герб и на старославянском написано завещание великого князя литовского Гедимина своему сыну, а с другой - на белорусском языке написаны сведения об основании города.

We didn't have much time or energy to explore Lida, so we only visited the main sights. The city is much smaller than Grodno, so there are fewer places of interest here, too. After a short walk around Lida, we boarded the train and headed onwards.

На осмотр Лиды у нас было немного времени и сил, поэтому мы посетили только основные достопримечательности. Город намного меньше Гродно соответственно интересных мест здесь тоже меньше. Немного погуляв по Лиде, мы сели на поезд и отправились дальше.
