Check out AI by Margaret Boden. Also, Norvig and Russell have a nice historical overview at the opening of their book. There's also the Cambridge Handbook of AI which has two good chapters on the history.

That's a bit of a hyperbolic statement regarding the AI bartering experiments they were running. Researchers stated they wound up using their names (Bob and Alice) as proxies for numbers in their exchanges.
