The Netflix Trap: Pretty Trailer, Rotten Core

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the real MVP here that is Netflix’s marketing team. Like hats off. I don’t know how they manage to make even the worst movies look like Oscar contenders, but Brick is proof that you can wrap a potato in gold foil and still bite into disappointment. This movie looked dark, mysterious, and promising in the trailer. A high tech residential building locks itself down. Tensions rise. Paranoia kicks in. It could’ve been a social experiment thriller like The Platform, or a psychological slow burn like The Invitation. But no. Instead, we get a half baked sci-fi script loaded with numerous bloody plot holes, unlikable characters, and a villain straight out of a 4th grader’s horror story.

The Opening: Forced Drama and Job Quitting Olympics

Why ? Because apparently the only way to process a miscarriage is to leave the corporate world together, in perfect sync, like synchronized swimmers of grief. When the husband hesitates (As Any Sane Person Would), she storms out dramatically. It’s supposed to be heavy and emotional, but instead it feels like a poorly written soap opera moment. We barely know these characters, and we’re already thrown into their meltdown. Zero buildup, zero context, just vibes.

Lockdown Horror: Who TF Designed This Building, HAL 9000?

Apparently, this modern apartment complex has an advanced defense system that seals every exit, cuts off the water supply, and traps the residents inside. Ahhaan, you read that right. A building designed for safety is literally programmed to kill its tenants during emergencies, like bruh wtf 😂 Who designed this ? Was it a retired Bond villain ? Is this a high rise or a high stakes escape room ?

Yuri the Villain: My 4 Year Old Nephew’s First Draft

If there were a competition for the world’s most confusing villain, Yuri would win hands down (Pun Intended But More On That Later) 🤣 His motive ? Unclear. His actions ? Inconsistent. He stops people from escaping, shoots residents, and generally acts like he’s starring in a different movie. Then he gets shot in the chest, walks it off like he’s John Wick, and reappears like a zombie without any explanation. Is he dead ? Alive ? Possessed ? Glitched ? At one point, I half expected him to burst into a dance number just to confuse us further 🙂

Old Man With a Gun: Drama for Drama’s Sake

Why ? No one knows. Maybe he thought the building lockdown was a live action PUBG event 🤷🏼‍♂️ His only purpose seems to be: 1.To die dramatically. 2.To give his black gay granddaughter a reason to cry. 3.To give the writers a fake sense of emotional depth. Unfortunately, none of it works. And just when you think her grief might lead to something meaningful BOOM she’s killed too. By Yuri, of course. Because why not ?

Tech Troubles: Wi-Fi ? No. QR Codes ? Absolutely.

Now let’s talk about technology in this movie or the lack of consistency in it. The characters claim there’s no internet, no phone signal, nothing. But seconds later, we see them scanning QR codes, launching apps, accessing programs on laptops. Are we supposed to believe these apps are working offline ? Is this magic ? Was the router possessed ? You can’t say “no connectivity” and then proceed to treat QR codes like magic keys to survival. Pick a side, movie.

That Scene with the Wall: Horror ? Sci-Fi ? Drug Trip ?

Instead, later in the film, it’s explained as just a “malfunction.” That’s it. A glitch. So why was she speaking like she was touching the surface of Satan’s microwave ? Why did no one stop her ? Who sticks half their body into glowing machinery during a life or death crisis ? The film builds tension with these eerie moments and then drops them like forgotten side quests.

And Then..The Landlord with No Hands

Yes, this movie contains a random subplot where the landlord is found dead with his hands cut off. And what do we get after this shocking reveal ? Nothing. No explanation. No context. No follow up. It’s as if the writers went, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if the landlord just.. lost his hands?” and forgot to finish the sentence. And to make matters worse or funnier the main character later walks around pointing out, “Hey, he has no hands!” as if it wasn’t bloody glaringly obvious.

The Surveillance Room: Spooky or Pointless ?

Towards the end, we discover a secret surveillance room filled with monitors watching every corner of the building. Cue the classic Big Brother paranoia. But plot twist: it turns out no one was behind the defense lockdown. It was just a glitch. So who installed those cameras ? Why were the residents being monitored ? What purpose did it serve ? The film just drops this eerie element with zero follow up, making the entire subplot feel like a red herring with no fish.

Final Thoughts: A Sci-Fi Thriller That Thrills No One

It could have been a suspenseful mix of Cube, Panic Room, and The Platform. Instead, we got a confused mess of ideas tossed together like leftover plot spaghetti. The characters are hollow, their decisions irrational, and the events strung together without logic or emotional weight. The pacing is off, the twists are lazy, and the ending if you can call it that is just a sigh of relief that it’s finally over. Honestly no one should watch this lol. Unless you’re studying bad screenwriting or need a sleep aid. If you’re looking for a thriller that challenges you, go watch The Platform. If you want emotional drama, try Pieces of a Woman. If you’re craving sci-fi mystery, go for Coherence. Just.. don’t click on Brick. Save your time. Save your sanity. And if Netflix tries to lure you in with a flashy preview, remember this review. Behind the dramatic trailer is 90 minutes of pure cinematic nonsense 🙂
