Hola amigos,

Corría finales del mes de agosto cuando, aburrido de estar en la oficina con poca actividad comercial y aprovechando el buen clima, decidí buscar un lugar poco concurrido y a la vez interesante de la ciudad de Gijón (España) y del que nadie hubiese publicado en #Worldmappin con la finalidad de presentar un lugar de visita alternativo a los que ya estaban publicados por mí y otros usuarios.

¿Qué lugar escogí y os quiero presentar?

El lugar escogido para romper con la monotonía de un soporífero martes de finales de Agosto fue la Campa Torres y su yacimiento arqueológico. La Campa Torres es un Parque Arqueológico y Natural situado en el Cabo Torres, una pequeña península que sobresale en el mar Cantábrico, al oeste de la ciudad de Gijón, a unos 6 km del centro de la ciudad.

Yacimiento arqueológico

El yacimiento arqueológico de la Campa Torres es uno de los yacimientos arqueológicos más extensos y mejor conservados del norte de Asturias, ya que cuenta con una extensión de unos 50.000m2. Para llegar al yacimiento, debemos trascurrir para varios caminos pavimentados de las afueras de Gijón y nos encontraremos un amplio aparcamiento desde el que veremos la parte inicial del yacimiento con un muralla defensiva muy bien cuidada.

Podremos guiarnos fácilmente con los diferentes paneles informativos, en los que nos van dando información de las distintas estructuras que nos iremos encontrando y nos sugerirá una ruta por el extenso yacimiento para que no nos perdamos ningún detalle.

Debemos ir con un buen calzado a realizar esta visita. Hay algunos desniveles pronunciados. Como en muchos otros yacimientos romanos y anteriores buscar lugares con cierta altura y desniveles les servia como ventajas ante posibles invasiones de los enemigos.

Y si los niveles no eran suficientes, un foso previo siempre ponía en dificultades a los foráneos para poder acceder al interior de las fortificaciones, las cuales eran vigiladas posiblemente por caballeros subidos sobre caballos. O eso se interpreta de tan llamativa escultura que nos encontramos previa al foso.

Este yacimiento arqueológico presentó ocupación continuada desde el siglo VI–V a.C. hasta finales del III d.C. Siendo uno de los yacimientos más prolífico de Asturias en cuento a piezas arqueológicas hayas en las distintas excavaciones realizadas.

De hecho, me sorprendió tras visitar la zona más próxima a la muralla como a lo lejos se podía divisar distintas arquitecturas castreñas diseminadas en la parte más próxima al cabo y casi 1 km de distancia de la zona amurallada.

En esta zona, más alejada, pude ver como las construcciones castreñas fueron evolucionando en el tiempo al ir migrando de las construcciones circulares a unas construcciones más próximas a una geometría rectangular.

Siendo de gran agrado ver, que las excavaciones arqueológicas en el lugar siguen activas, como reflejan las zonas acordonadas y en cierta medida protegidas con algunos plásticos para proteger de las inclemencias del tiempo el conocimiento y piezas arqueológicas que están aun sin descubrir.

Piezas arqueológicas que, como muestran las fotografías que hay en el yacimiento, datan de épocas de la Edad de Bronce y de la Edad de Hierro.

Museo

Y que son expuestas en un museo que hay en las proximidades del yacimiento, cuyo acceso está abierto de 10am a 17pm de octubre a marzo y de 10:30 am a 19:00pm de abril de septiembre de martes a domingo y que por pocos minutos me encontré cerrado el día de mi visita.

Adicionalmente en este entorno único a parte del propio yacimiento tenemos la posibilidad de visitar el Faro Torres desde el que se puede disfrutar de una bonitas vistas del puerto del Musel.

Vistas

Aunque, para vistas las que podemos disfrutar en el extremo más oriental del yacimiento con vistas al mar Cantábrico y a la costa asturiana en los días soleados como en el que hice mi visita.

Por poner una pega al entorno, solo decir que tener una estación de gas natural en su proximidad fue lo único que me desencantó. Es el difícil equilibrio entre conservación paisajístico y del patrimonio con el de la prosperidad económica que proporciona la industria energética. Sin más, no duden de visitar este lugar tan pintoresco lleno de historia.

Hello friends, It was late August when, bored of being in the office with little commercial activity and taking advantage of the good weather, I decided to look for a place in the city of Gijón (Spain) that was not very crowded but interesting, and that no one had posted on #Worldmappin, with the aim of presenting an alternative place to visit to those already posted by me and other users.

What place did I choose and want to show you?

The place I picked to break up the monotony of a boring Tuesday at the end of August was Campa Torres and its archaeological site. Campa Torres is an Archaeological and Natural Park located in Cabo Torres, a small peninsula jutting out into the Cantabrian Sea, west of the city of Gijón, about 6 km from the city center.

Archaeological site

The archaeological site of Campa Torres is one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in northern Asturias, covering an area of around 50,000 m². To reach the site, we must pass through several paved roads on the outskirts of Gijón, where we will find a large parking lot from which we can see the initial part of the site with a well-maintained defensive wall.

We can easily find our way around using the various information panels, which provide details about the different structures we will encounter and suggest a route through the extensive site so that we don't miss any details.

We should wear good footwear for this visit. There are some steep slopes. As in many other Roman and earlier sites, finding places with a certain height and slopes gave them an advantage against possible enemy invasions.

And if the slopes were not enough, a moat always made it difficult for outsiders to access the interior of the fortifications, which were possibly guarded by knights on horseback. Or at least that is how we interpret the striking sculpture we find before the moat.

This archaeological site was continuously occupied from the 6th-5th century BC until the end of the 3rd century AD. It is one of the most prolific sites in Asturias in terms of archaeological finds from the various excavations carried out.

In fact, I was surprised after visiting the area closest to the wall, as in the distance I could see different types of fortified architecture scattered around the part closest to the cape, almost 1 km away from the walled area.

In this more remote area, I could see how the Castreño constructions evolved over time, migrating from circular constructions to ones closer to a rectangular geometry.

It was very pleasing to see that archaeological excavations are still active at the site, as reflected in the cordoned-off areas, which are to some extent protected with plastic sheeting to shield the knowledge and archaeological pieces that are still undiscovered from the elements.

Archaeological pieces that, as shown in the photographs at the site, date back to the Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Museum

These artifacts are on display in a museum near the site, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October to March and from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April to September, Tuesday through Sunday. Unfortunately, I found it closed for a few minutes on the day of my visit.

In addition to the site itself, this unique setting offers the opportunity to visit the Torres Lighthouse, which offers beautiful views of the port of Musel.

Views

However, we can enjoy views at the easternmost end of the site overlooking the Cantabrian Sea and the Asturian coast on sunny days like the one when I visited.

If I had to find fault with the surroundings, I would say that the only thing that disappointed me was the proximity of a natural gas station. It is the difficult balance between landscape and heritage conservation and the economic prosperity provided by the energy industry.
