Avevo detto che prima o poi avrei voluto scrivere di Spino, beh è stato un -prima- piuttosto che un -poi-

Oggi siamo andati dal veterinario, ed ogni volta che Spino va a fare un controllo è solo per capire quanto è peggiorata la situazione del suo cuore malandato. Spino ha una malformazione cardiaca, una valvola non si chiude e, nel tentativo di farlo, tendendo e tendendo verso l'alto, ha contribuito ad ingrandire la parte del cuore che dovrebbe essere, in proporzione, di un terzo rispetto all'altra. Nel suo cuoricino questa parte è invece diventata molto più grande, quasi sei volte più di quanto dovrebbe, alla schermo dell' eco-cuore non si distingue più nemmeno il miocardio, sembra che nel petto ci sia una camera unica che, incredibilmente, continua a battere ed a pompare il sangue in giro per il suo corpo gracile, con quel pelo biondo ispido da spinone che ha ispirato il suo nome un attimo dopo averlo visto, come per tutti i miei cani.

Spino l'ho trovato nel 2014, all'inizio di Ottobre di quell'anno ed aveva all'incirca 8 mesi; ho svoltato per una stradina, una traversa di via di Portonaccio, e lui mi ha attraversato davanti, non correndo ma comunque a passo svelto. Notai subito che aveva sia un collare che una pettorina e, dopo aver inchiodato per evitare di investirlo, ho proseguito per la mia strada; mi sono fermato poco più di mezz'ora e, tornando indietro per riprendere la strada principale, rieccolo vagare a passo svelto per la via, stavolta mi sono fermato. Mi si è avvicinato subito, un po' diffidente ma meno di quanto ci si potesse aspettare, magrissimo e con queste due palle nere dolci al posto degli occhi, da quel momento e per sempre a mostrare un contegno per cercare di nascondere ogni sua fragilità. Un cane concentrato sugli affari suoi, mai attaccabrighe, che può sembrare schivo ed anaffettivo a chi lo vede per la prima volta ma che in realtà è un pozzo senza fondo di dolcezza. Sono entrato nell'unico bar nei paraggi a chiedere se fosse di qualcuno o se qualcuno lo avesse mai visto, niente, solo un ragazzo li fuori che mi spiegò il perchè di collare e pettorina: dicendomi che dei giovani accampati nella stradina con un camper lo avevano visto in mattinata e, pensando si fosse perso, gli avevano messo una pettorina e lo avevano legato ad un mezzo in sosta nella speranza che qualcuno che lo stesse cercando potesse vederlo, evidentemente non era così. Salì in macchina e si accucciò dietro, ci dirigemmo verso la mia veterinaria, nella speranza che avesse il microchip anche se, dopo aver capito l'origine di collare e pettorina, non avevo tante speranze. Ovviamente niente microchip, io tornavo da un anno in cui avevo vissuto in Spagna dove mi ero portato Smilzo, che al momento era rimasto il mio unico cane.

Tornato in Italia stavo vivendo a casa dei miei genitori, in attesa di trovare una sistemazione e, quando tornai a casa con Spino, la mia preoccupazione più grande era quella di vedere come avrebbe reagito Smilzo che solitamente non era proprio amichevole con tutti i maschi, specialmente in casa sua. Sapevo che il nuovo arrivato era cucciolo e, chiedendo come sempre uno sforzo enorme al mio cane, varcai la porta di casa dietro la quale Smilzo era già schierato. Lo annusò con un po' di sospetto ma lo accettò immediatamente, alla fine era un cucciolone e forse anche Smilzo iniziava a soffrire la solitudine dopo la morte delle due cagnette che avevo prima di lui e che lo avevano accolto nella nostra famiglia, è sempre stato propenso a girare in branco. Non volevo tenerlo, da poco ero rimasto con un solo cane e mi andava bene così, iniziai ad attivarmi per trovargli una sistemazione. Provarono a conoscerlo, a vedere se gli potesse piacere, tre o quattro persone, tra cui un mio amico che poco dopo si comprò un cane orrendo di razza, non ricordo nemmeno che razza fosse ma ci rimasi proprio di merda. Quel rifiuto mi fece provare ancor più tenerezza per quel biondo spelacchiato, già lo adoravo e vederlo proposto a questo o a quell'altro mi iniziava a causare un malessere quasi fisico e, quando scoprimmo che il soffio al cuore che aveva era in realtà una brutta malformazione, non ebbi più alcun dubbio che le nostre strade non si sarebbero più divise, almeno non per volontà mia. "Ho visto cani con questo problema arrivare anche a quattro, cinque anni" è la frase che disse la cardiologa la prima volta che lo visitò, e per me furono parole scolpite nella pietra. Nei primi tre mesi ha avuto due volte delle febbri altissime, stava per rimetterci la pelle. Non è più successo che avesse crisi del genere, ma sono entrato nell'ordine di idee che il suo cuore potesse cedere in ogni momento, ogni istante passato con lui era un dono della natura e lo è ancor di più ora che ha superato i cinque anni.

La sua condanna è stata in questo caso anche la sua fortuna, non si può fare niente per curarlo e non ci sono particolari accorgimenti da prendere affinché la situazione non peggiori quindi Spino può fare tutto, correre, nuotare, giocare coi fratelli, inseguire le cornacchie e stanare conigli e fagiani... lo fa di continuo, è il più attivo dei mie 4 cani quasi volendo sfidare la malattia che lo ha colpito, se ne infischia e si gode ogni giorno a pieno. Ringrazierò sempre di avere sentito quelle parole dalla bocca della mia veterinaria, -"Può fare tutto, mangiare tutto, quando deve succedere, succederà ma non puoi fare niente per evitarlo o ritardarlo se non i normali accorgimenti". Amici e parenti mi prendono da sempre in giro per l'occhio di riguardo che riservo a Spino, "non lo sgridare mai perchè è malato e vedrai che campa più di tutti!!", ovviamente io so che non è così, ogni volta che lo devo sgridare o riprendere per qualcosa ho il terrore che si possa spaventare troppo, il suo petto è perennemente in moto, come se sotto pelle avesse perennemente un mare in tempesta.

Col passare del tempo respira sempre peggio e quando è seduto a riposarsi si capisce quanta fatica faccia a funzionare il suo corpicino per quanto è visibile ad occhio nudo il battito del suo cuore, poggiando la mano sembra di toccare un rubinetto di acqua rotto. Scrivo di lui oggi, perché quando se ne andrà probabilmente ogni mio pensiero sarebbe inondato dall'emozione, scrivo di lui oggi perché voglio celebrarlo da vivo, come merita per tutto quello che sta dando alla mia vita, per come la sta riempiendo di sensazioni positive ed insegnamenti preziosi. La mia paura più grande e che possa sentirsi male durante una delle sue scorribande, immerso nei cespugli della caffarella a stanare i fagiani, dove magari non posso vederlo e dove potrei metterci ore per trovarlo. Non è facilissimo convivere con un cane con questo problema, sopratutto se, come faccio io, dedico la mia giornata ai cani miei ed anche a quelli degli altri visto che ho fatto della mia passione il mio lavoro. Non è facile convivere ogni giorno con la paura che ad uno dei tuoi cani possa fermarsi improvvisamente il cuore, magari in una giornata di sole mentre sta giocando coi suoi fratelli inseguendo gabbiani e cornacchie, non è facile per me, che vivo per loro, che ricevo più di quanto riesca a dare e che sono impotente di fronte al suo problema. Darei qualsiasi cosa per aiutarlo, non umanizzo gli animai, per carità, adoro i cani per quello che sono e per quanto sono diversi dagli uomini, mi piacerebbe poter "canizzare" le persone piuttosto, immaginarle senza rabbia gratuita e violenza insensata, senza desiderio di dominio fine a se stesso e volti al miglioramento ed alla cooperazione. E se qualcuno pensa che non abbia ben presente cosa sia la morte ed il dolore, che possa mancare di rispetto a chi piange i propri cari per la tanta compassione mostrata per gli animali, sappia che la morte l'ho conosciuta quando avevo pochi anni con la perdita di mio padre e, a prescindere da cosa successe dopo, quell'avvenimento mi mise da subito, e per sempre, di fronte alla riflessione sulla vita e sulla morte. I miei cani sono la mia priorità, e sono orgoglioso che lo siano, da loro ricevo ed ho ricevuto più che da qualsiasi altra cosa che abbia conosciuto in vita, il fatto che cerchi di restituire loro il massimo, per quanto il mio egoismo così prettamente umano mi consenta di fare, ne è solo la naturale conseguenza. Negli anni Smilzo e Spino sono diventati una parola sola, SmilzoeSpino, hanno segnato insieme questa nuova fase della mia vita. Dopo che tante cose erano cambiate hanno messo a fuoco il mio futuro dandomi sempre un filo a cui attaccarmi, regalandomi profondità nascoste della mia sensibilità. Smilzo e Spino, si odiano e si amano, il primo ha accettato il secondo che ha sempre dovuto reprimere la sua gelosia per rispetto, sembrano ignorarsi per giorni ma ti accorgi che elettricità sgorghi tra loro nel momento in cui ci ritroviamo insieme ad aspettare uno o l'altro. Fratelli veri. Sarà difficile per me chiudere questa fase, anche se non saranno i primi cani che mi troverò a seppellire, hanno dipinto questi anni con colori accesi, vivi, hanno riempito le mie giornate di affetto e mi hanno fatto sentire importante, ma mai quanto lo sono stati loro per me. Ricordo sempre quella volta in cui la mia veterinaria dell'epoca mi disse che per Chelsea, la prima cagnetta della mia vita, non c'era più niente da fare, che le gambe di dietro non andavano e che lei faceva ormai anche fatica a respirare per via dell'immobilità che era costretta a subire, ricordo il pianto che mi sono fatto in macchina con lei sdraiata sui sedili di dietro, la presa di consapevolezza che mi stavo avvicinando ad un momento cruciale della mia vita, per la prima volta dovevo scegliere io quando mettere fine alla sua sofferenza, elaborando il fatto che quello splendido viaggio insieme stava per finire. Fu uno dei pianti più dilanianti della mia esistenza, se ne stava per andare un'altra parte di me, ed in quel momento ero completamente solo ad affrontarlo. Quella sensazione la rivivo ogni volta che porto Spino ad un controllo, ogni volta viene trattato come un miracolato dall'adorata Diana, la mia veterinaria da 6 anni a questa parte. Ogni volta esco dallo studio con le lacrime agli occhi, ogni volta che mi viene rispiattellata davanti la cruda realtà delle cose, quel suo cuore malandato che lentamente sta danneggiando tutto il resto.

Lui, impassibile a tutto questo, continua ad essere il più attivo dei miei quattro cani, quando camminiamo per i parchi romani non sai mai dove sia ma sai che prima o poi spunterà in coda al gruppo, ogni sua fuga per cespugli e colline alla ricerca di qualche preda è costantemente viziata dal dover tenere un'orecchio teso a dove stiamo andando noi, così legato a me ed al suo fratellone Smilzo. E' fantastico averti qui, ed ora voglio smettere di piangerti come se già fossi morto, anche solamente per esser grato del fatto che tu sembri non far caso a quel gran macello che hai nel petto, ti stai battendo come un leone per stare più tempo possibile con noi, e noi ti amiamo da morire.

Trovarti è stato un dono, averti con noi un privilegio...con la speranza che tutto questo possa durare il più a lungo possibile e con la certezza che quello che stai lasciando sarà con me per sempre, forza piccolo grande Spino, continua a mettercela tutta perché ho ancora tanto bisogno di te.

In its little heart this part has become much larger, almost six times more than it should, the heart-screen does not even distinguish even the myocardium, it seems that in the chest there is a single room that, incredibly, continues to beating and pumping blood around his frail body, with that blond hair spurred by spinone that inspired his name a moment after seeing it, as for all my dogs.

Spino I found it in 2014, at the beginning of October of that year and had about 8 months; I turned to a small road, a cross street of Via di Portonaccio, and he crossed me in front of me, not running but still briskly. I immediately noticed that he had both a collar and a harness and, after having nailed to avoid investing it, I continued on my way; I stopped a little over half an hour and, coming back to get back on the main road, I wandered at a brisk pace by the way, this time I stopped. I entered the only bar nearby to ask if it was someone or if someone had ever seen, nothing, just a guy out there who explained why the collar and harness: telling me that young people camped in the road with a camper they had seen in the morning and, thinking he was lost, they had put a harness on him and tied him to a parked vehicle in the hope that someone who was looking for him could see it, evidently it was not so. He got into the car and crouched behind us, we headed for my vet, hoping he had the microchip even if, after understanding the origin of collar and harness, I did not have much hope. Obviously no microchips, I had been back for a year when I had lived in Spain where I had brought Smilzo, who at the moment was my only dog. Back in Italy I was living in my parents' house, waiting to find accommodation and, when I returned home with Spino, my biggest concern was to see how Smilzo would react that usually was not really friendly with all the males, especially in his house.

I knew that the newcomer was a puppy and, as always asking for a huge effort to my dog, I crossed the front door behind which Smilzo was already lined up. He sniffed it with a little suspicion but accepted it immediately, in the end it was a puppy and maybe even Smilzo began to suffer loneliness after the death of the two little dogs that I had before him and that had welcomed him into our family, he was always inclined to turn in pack. I did not want to keep it, I had just stayed with a single dog and it was fine with me, I started to activate myself to find accommodation. They tried to get to know him, to see if he could like it, three or four people, including a friend of mine who shortly after bought a horrendous dog of race, I do not even remember what kind of breed it was but there was just shit.

That refusal made me feel even more tenderness for that blond mangy, already I adored him and to see him proposed to this or that other I began to cause an almost physical malaise and when we discovered that the breath to the heart that he had was actually a bad malformation I no longer had any doubt that our paths would no longer be divided, at least not for my will. "I have seen dogs with this problem get even four, five years" is the phrase that the cardiologist said the first time I visited, and for me were words carved in stone.

I entered the order of ideas that his heart could give up at any moment, every moment spent with him was a gift from nature and even more so now that he is over five years old. His condemnation was in this case also his fortune, nothing can be done to cure it and there are no special measures to be taken so that the situation does not get worse so Spino can do everything, run, swim, play with the brothers, chase the crows and flushing out rabbits and pheasants ... he does it all the time, he's the most active of my 4 dogs, almost wanting to challenge the disease that has struck him, he does not care about it and enjoys every day to the full. I will always thank you for hearing those words from the mouth of my vet, - "It can do everything, eat everything, when it has to happen, it will happen but you can not do anything to avoid it or delay it if not the normal precautions". Friends and relatives have always taken me around for the attention that I reserve to Spino, "do not ever scold him because he is sick and you'll see that he's more than anyone!", Of course I know it's not like that, every time I have to scold or resume for something I have the terror that you can scare too much, his chest is perpetually in motion, as if under the skin had perpetually a stormy sea. As time passes, he breathes worse and when he is sitting down to rest he understands how hard he is working his little body for what is visible to the naked eye the beating of his heart, resting his hand seems o touch a broken water faucet.

I write about him today, because when he leaves probably all my thoughts would be flooded with emotion, I write about him today because I want to celebrate him alive, as he deserves for all he is giving to my life, for how he is filling it with positive feelings and precious teachings. My biggest fear is that he may feel sick during one of his raids, plunged in the bushes of the caffarella to flush out the pheasants, where maybe I can not see him and where I could spend hours to find him. It is not easy to live with a dog with this problem, especially if, as I do, I dedicate my day to my dogs and also to those of others because I have made my work my passion.

It is not easy to live every day with the fear that one of your dogs can suddenly stop the heart, maybe on a sunny day while he is playing with his brothers chasing seagulls and crows, it is not easy for me, I live for them, that I receive more than I can give and I am powerless in the face of his problem. I would give anything to help him, I do not humanize the souls, for heaven's sake, I love dogs for what they are and for how much they are different from men, I would like to be able to "sing" people rather, imagine them without gratuitous anger and senseless violence, without desire domain end in itself and aimed at improvement and cooperation. And if someone thinks that he does not know what death and pain is, that he may be disrespectful to those who cry their loved ones for the great compassion shown for animals, know that death I met her when I was a few years old the loss of my father and, regardless of what happened next, that event immediately put me, and forever, before the reflection on life and death.

My dogs are my priority, and I am proud that they are, from them I receive and I received more than anything else that has known in life, the fact that you try to give them back the maximum, as far as my selfishness so purely human allows me to do, it is only the natural consequence. Over the years, Smilzo and Spino have become one word, SmilzoeSpino, have marked this new phase of my life together. After many things had changed, they focused my future, always giving me a thread to attach to, giving me hidden depths of my sensitivity. Smilzo and Spino, they hate and love each other, the first accepted the second who always had to repress his jealousy out of respect, seem to ignore for days but you realize that electricity flows between them when we find ourselves together waiting for one or the other. True brothers.

It will be difficult for me to close this phase, even if they will not be the first dogs I will bury, they painted these years with bright colors, alive, filled my days with affection and made me feel important, but never as much as I am been them for me. I always remember that time when my veterinarian of the time told me that for Chelsea, the first dog of my life, there was nothing left to do, that the back legs did not go and that she was also having difficulty breathing because of the immobility that was forced to suffer, I remember the cry that I made in the car with her lying on the back seats, the realization of awareness that I was approaching a crucial moment of my life, for the first time I had to choose me when to end his suffering, elaborating the fact that that wonderful trip together was about to end. It was one of the most crying tears of my life, another part of me was going to go, and at that moment I was completely alone to face it. That feeling I relive every time I bring Spino to a check, every time it is treated like a miracle by the beloved Diana, my veterinary for 6 years now.

Every time I leave the studio with tears in my eyes, every time I am returned to the stark reality of things, that shabby heart that is slowly damaging everything else. And he, impassive to all this, continues to be the most active of my four dogs, when we walk through the Roman parks you never know where it is but you know that sooner or later will fall in line the group, every his escape to bushes and hills to looking for some prey is constantly spoiled by having to keep an ear strained to where we are going, so tied to me and his big brother Smilzo.

It's great to have you here, and now I want to stop crying as if you were already dead, even just to be grateful that you seem not to notice that big slaughter in your chest, you're beating like a lion to spend more time possible with us, and we love you to die for.

Finding you was a gift, having a privilege with us ... with the hope that all this could last as long as possible and with the certainty that what you are leaving will be with me forever, great little strength Spino, keep putting it all because I still need you so much.
