Why are alts going down?
Not all, but as we can see majority of alts are negative at the moment. My take on this is; people are dumping alts and converting them to BTC, so they'll get their hands on BitCoin Gold when BTC forks

Why users are switching over from Poloniex to Bittrex
Not long ago, Poloniex used to top coinmarketcap charts when it comes to altcoin trading but not anymore. Bittrex has taken its spot. As of today, Bittrex has: $257,634,233 and Poloniex has: $114,189,318
