Can I still get a Corporate Job at 45?
An image generated with AI
I have to admit that I need a job, but the thing is, can I still get a job at my age in today's competitive job market? I have never worked a job since I graduated from college 20 years ago, majorly due to my health condition and lack of persons in position that could help me. After working around and traveling with my credentials and qualifications for a year or two, I resigned to doing whatever I could find to do to keep life going.
I did a couple of menial jobs like commercial bike riding, building site construction work and hawking goods until I settled into a small trading business that has sustained me for nearly two decades now, but the present economic situation has forced me into a corner where the business can no longer sustain me and my family, and the more I think about it the more I realize that I need to get alternative job.
But at my age and without experience in formal employment will I be able to get a job considering how many young graduates are out there competing for a few jobs available in my city. There are not industries or companies in my city that can employ people except for local government intervention jobs for an average pay and are also temporary.
My wife has been urging me to go and try my luck for the intervention jobs even though the pay is low and the job duration can only last as long the present government is in power which could be a year from now or less because this year is an election year in my state.
I felt it doesn't worth it and instead we could find a means to raise additional money to boost our current trading business. This looks more viable for me than working an intervention job with a merger salary that could end at any time shortly due to political changes. With good capital injection, our trading business could generate enough profits that can sustain my family without affecting the business.
Raising fresh capital is not easy though and seeking help from local money lenders is not a good option because of the high interest rates they charged and also the fear that most of those money lenders might use diabolical means to keep you trapped in their debt circle to make you pay more interest for a longer time than you originally agree to refund the money.
Nonetheless, I don't have any other option apart from doing all we can to keep the trading business afloat and hoping that things improve in the near future.
In Nigeria we tell people to pray that Nigeria should not happen to them but I fear it's already happening to many of us especially those who are operating small businesses like myself. The economic hardship is real and the government care less about the plight of the common man on the street. All they throw on our faces everyday is their campaign banners and promises that has never been fulfill from ages.
Well, every man to his own as they say, I remain resolute and hopeful that by the grace of God things will turn around for us for the better and my family would find peace and financial stability once again.
