The people of the Osing Tribe in Banyuwangi District, East Java have a special tradition of expressing gratitude for their abundant agricultural crops. This ceremony or ritual is very unique and called kebo-keboan. This ritual is also intended as a village clean ceremony and expects that the entire agricultural area there is far from pest attacks throughout the year.

In this ceremony a number of men are deliberately chosen to be overweight and fitted with artificial buffalo horns, bells and pulling a plowing paddy field. The bodies of these men were painted black with used oil and mixed with charcoal. They are paraded around the village with a beautiful woman who is dressed up as a symbol of the sri goddess or rice goddess.

At first glance, the appearance of the male participants of this ritual looks haunted. But this is a form of buffalo so-invented as a symbol that the buffalo is an animal that plays an important role in working on rice fields of citizens.

Masyarakat dari Suku Osing di Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur punya tradisi khusus dalam menyampaikan rasa syukur atas hasil panen pertanian mereka yang melimpah. Upacara atau ritual ini sangat unik dan disebut dengan kebo-keboan. Ritual ini juga dimaksudkan sebagai upacara bersih desa serta mengharapkan agar seluruh areal pertanian di sana jauh dari serangan hama sepanjang tahun.

Dalam upacara ini sejumlah laki-laki sengaja dipilih yang bertubuh gemuk dan dipasangi tanduk kerbau buatan, lonceng serta menarik sebuah alat pembajak sawah. Tubuh para lelaki ini pun dicat hitam dengan oli bekas dan dicampur arang. Mereka diarak berkeliling desa bersama seorang wanita cantik yang didandani sebagai simbol dewi sri atau dewi padi.

Sekilas, penampilan para laki-laki peserta ritual ini tampak angker. Namun ini merupakan bentuk kerbau jadi-jadian sebagai simbol bahwa kerbau merupakan hewan yang berperan penting dalam menggarap lahan persawahan warga.

Tradisi ini telah berlangsung lama dan terus hidup di tengah masyarakat setempat secara turun temurun. Kini tradisi yang digelar setiap tahun itu telah menjadi salah satu agenda pariwisata dari Kabupaten Banyuwangi.

Namun ritual ini hanya dilakukan masyarakat dari dua desa, yakni Desa Aliyan, Kecamatan Rogojampi dan Desa Alasmalang, Kecamatan Singojuruh. Menurut beberapa referensi, terdapat sedikit perbedaan dalam pelaksanan ritual tersebut oleh warga dari kedua desa ini.

Ritual ini menjadi semakin meriah ketika panitia sengaja menggelarnya di tengah areal persawahan. Para peserta kebo-keboan ikut mengejar dan menarik para penonton ke dalam sawah sehingga ikut berlumuran lumpur.

Selain warga lokal dan warga lainnya dari sejumlah kabupaten di Jawa Timur, kegiatan kebo-keboan ini juga menarik minat wisatawan asing. Tahun lalu, panitia mencatat sejumlah wisatawan dari Jepang dan Korea ikut hadir secara khusus untuk menyaksikan ritual yang telah berlangsung sejak abad ke-18 ini.
