The story begins one day in the Spiral Mountain area. On that particular morning, while the sun is shining and wildlife is thriving, Banjo finds himself asleep snoring in his bed while his sister, Tooty, waits for him to go on an adventure with her. # Meanwhile, the witch Gruntilda admires her beauty using her cauldron as a mirror; even though she is the ugliest of them all, she is still convinced that she is the most charming woman. She asks her magic cauldron, Dingpot, if she is the most beautiful of all, however Dingpot answers that it is not her but Tooty who is the most enchanting on earth. Gruntilda, enraged, set out to go to Banjo's house to kidnap her sister and steal her beauty. # Tooty was talking to Bottles the mole, when Gruntilda arrived enraged from her lair on her broomstick and took her away, lifting her up into the air. Banjo, on the other hand, is sleeping in his bed, until Kazooie wakes him up. But when they both leave, they find out that Gruntilda has flown away with Tooty on her back. After hearing about it from Bottles, the two begin their journey up Spiral Mountain and into Gruntilda's Lair to save Banjo's lost sister.
