Although the trip to Chile had passed more quickly than I wanted it to, its end meant no great sorrow for me either. This was because instead of returning to my home in Buenos Aires, I had planned my return to Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego. Summer was approaching, the best time not to feel so cold at the end of the world, so I wanted to return to take advantage of the pleasant weather and enjoy the mountains a little more. When I got back, there still weren't that many guests in the hostel where I was volunteering, so if I wanted to socialise a bit more, I had to resort to my trusty tool Couchsurfing. Once again, it worked perfectly 😃.

A pesar de que el viaje a Chile había pasado más rápido de lo que quería, su fin tampoco significaba gran pena para mí. Esto fue porque en lugar de volver a mi casa en Buenos Aires, había planeado mi regreso de vuelta a Ushuaia, en Tierra del Fuego. Se acercaba el verano, la mejor época para no sentir tanto frío en el fin del mundo, así que quería volver para aprovechar de ese clima agradable y disfrutar un poco más de las montañas. Cuando volví, todavía no habían tantos huéspedes en el hostel en el que estaba haciendo mi voluntariado, por lo que si quería sociabilizar un poco más, tenía que recurrir a mi herramienta confiable Couchsurfing. Una vez más, funcionó perfectamente 😃.

--- --- Having returned from the neighbouring country after my trip with M brought me back to the reality of what it was like to travel alone. This is no problem for me because I love socialising, but the problem is when there are no people around to do it. But thanks to knowing how Couchsurfing works, I was almost always able to find occasional friends to go out with. And as I like diverse groups, where it is possible to exchange many anecdotes, I made sure that we were at least four people per outing (incidentally, to share the taxi to the trailheads).

Haber vuelto del país vecino después de mi viaje con M me trajo de nuevo a la realidad de lo que era viajar sola. Esto no es ningún problema para mí porque me encanta sociabilizar, pero el problema es cuando no hay gente cerca para hacerlo. Pero gracias a haber conocido cómo funciona Couchsurfing, casi siempre pude encontrar amigos ocasionales para salir de paseo. Y como me gustan los grupos diversos, en donde es posible intercambiar muchas anécdotas, me encargaba de que fuéramos al menos cuatro personas por salida (de paso, para compartir el taxi hasta los inicios de los senderos).

--- For those who are not familiar with Couchsurfing, this is an application for travellers whose main purpose is to obtain temporary accommodation in private homes. In this app, there are people who offer a place in their home and travellers who can request this type of stay for free. The main purpose is to share a good time with the hosts while getting to know the place you are passing through, and also to save on accommodation. But as I never need this, as I have my stay at the hostel where I volunteer, I just use another section of the app called ‘Hangouts’. This function allows you to make your profile available for a walk at that moment: it's like a ‘Tinder’ for travellers, in which if you match with another person or persons, a chat is generated so that you can chat and plan a casual walk.

Para aquellos quienes no conocen Couchsurfing, esta es una aplicación para viajeros cuyo fin principal es obtener alojamiento temporal en casas particulares. En esta aplicación, hay personas que ofrecen un lugar en su casa y viajeros que pueden solicitar este tipo de estadía gratis. El fin principal es compartir un buen momento con los anfitriones mientras se conoce el lugar de paso, y también ahorrar en hospedaje. Pero como yo nunca necesito esto, ya que la estadía la tengo en el hostel en el que hago mi voluntariado, solo uso otra sección de la aplicación llamada "Hangouts". Esta función permite poner tu perfil disponible como para un paseo en ese momento: es como un "Tinder" de viajeros, en el que si haces "match" con otra u otras personas, se genera un chat para poder conversar y planificar un paseo casual.

--- Throughout my stay in Ushuaia, which lasted almost six months in total, I used Couchsurfing Hangouts dozens of times. This allowed me to meet many people from all over, with whom we shared treks, pub crawls, walks in the city and even meetings in the hostel I was staying in. The first Couchsurfing meeting I did after returning from Chile was with three guys, one from England, one from Turkey and one from Argentina. We decided to trek to the Cinco Hermanos Lagoon, where we first went to the Bridal Veil Waterfall. I knew it but the boys didn't, so we stopped there for a moment to take pictures.

Durante toda mi estadía en Ushuaia, que en total duró casi seis meses, usé los Hangouts de Couchsurfing decenas de veces. Esto me permitió conocer a muchas personas de todas partes, con las que compartimos trekkings, salidas al bar, caminatas en la ciudad e incluso reuniones en el hostel en el que yo estaba. La primera reunión que hice de Couchsurfing después de haber vuelto de Chile fue con tres chicos, uno de Inglaterra, otro de Turquía y otro de Argentina. Decidimos hacer un trekking hasta la Laguna Cinco Hermanos, en donde primero pasamos por la Cascada Velo de la Novia. Yo la conocía pero los chicos no, así que nos detuvimos un momento ahí para sacar fotos.

--- The stretch to the waterfall was short but quite steep, but the four of us were experienced trekkers so it was no problem for us. What was a problem was communicating with the guys from England and Turkey, as my English is very bad. However, I gave it my best shot and I think we exchanged some good ideas in the time we shared together. They were also able to practice their Spanish with me, although their level of the opposite language was much better than mine.

El tramo hasta llegar a la cascada era corto aunque con bastante desnivel, pero los cuatro éramos trekkinistas experimentados así que no fue problema para nosotros. Lo que si fue problema fue comunicarme con los chicos de Inglaterra y Turquía, ya que mi inglés es malísimo. Sin embargo, hice mi mejor intento y creo que intercambiamos buenas ideas en el tiempo que compartimos juntos. Ellos también pudieron practicar su español conmigo, aunque su nivel del idioma contrario era mucho mejor que el mío.

--- The outings I organised on Couchsurfing were always fun, and in the process saved us a bit of money, as well as having a good time. A taxi to the start of this trail and back to the city cost $20, which is not much for four people. By the way, we all took away a language lesson, as well as having seen a nice place. When I told my friends that I was going to the mountains with people I'd only spoken to for a few minutes in the morning via an app, they were quite worried, but after all the time in Ushuaia doing that, they relaxed. Now I have Couchsurfing contacts all over the world: I just have to get on a plane and go visit them ❤️.

Las salidas que organicé en Couchsurfing siempre resultaron divertidas y de paso nos servían para ahorrar un poco de dinero, además de pasar un buen momento. Un taxi hasta el inicio de este sendero, ida y vuelta a la ciudad, costaba $20, que repartido entre cuatro personas no es mucho. De paso, todos nos llevábamos una lección de idiomas, además de haber visto un lindo lugar. Cuando les contaba a mis amigas que me iba a la montaña con personas con las que apenas había hablado unos minutos en la mañana a través de una app, se preocupaban bastante, pero después de todo el tiempo en Ushuaia haciendo eso, se relajaron. Ahora tengo contactos de Couchsurfing repartidos en todo el mundo: solo tengo que tomar un avión e ir a visitarlos ❤️.
