RE: When your crystals are like plates, you get sundogs
Yes they are more common on cold days, but they can happen during the summer too. It just means that the ice can form at lower altitudes on a cold day.

RE: Spectacular series of sun phenomena appear in the skies of northern Chile!
These are gorgeous. I've been taking photos of them and giving talks about these effects for years. Let me know if you have any questions. Yours sincerely, your friendly neighbourhood physicist.

RE: Strange Sky In Kuching: A Sign Of Things To Come?
Indeed this is from ice particles. They occur in relatively high altitude clouds where the temperature can be extremely low, even in tropical places. It's amazing what you can see when you know to look

RE: [Effective Altruism #1] Introduction
I wrote a post introducing people a little to effective altruism, and offering a free book to those who want to know more...but so far nobody seems to want free books...what is happening in the world?

RE: Crepuscular rays (Sun Rays) - Original photos of a cool natural phenomenon.
Have you ever looked out for anticrepuscular rays. They are the rays which meet back at the antisolar point. Mine taken at Muizenberg beach in Cape Town:

RE: Cape Town drought
I save all of the water from my washing machine (on the most economical setting it is around 60 liters), and use it to flush my toilet. I store it in 25 liter containers and add a little bleach to stop
