Synopsis

The company has disbanded, everything has become chaos. They stop looking for Frodo due to the sudden attack of the orcs, where Boromir perishes. Frodo tries to escape not only to save his life, but he knows that the lives of others are in danger while he is around. At the same time Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli try to find Merry and Pipin, giving up in a certain way to look for Frodo because in their own way, Aragorn and the rest understand that it must be so. Of course Frodo did not leave alone, Sam goes with him. I'll say it right away, it's my favorite book. It has action, it has drama, it's exciting, entertaining, interesting. It has everything. I think it's precisely at this point in the story where Tolkien most clearly demonstrates why he is who he is today and why his work was so incredible. It's not just the great detail with which he describes absolutely everything that happened, it's also the exceptional way of writing a story that feels like an emotional roller coaster. You cry at death, you're filled with tenderness at true friendship, you're excited by battles that are epic, you're filled with intrigue with Gollum or the Ents and you're as distressed as Frodo under the influence of the Ring. All in just one book that escalates in intensity page after page. It's also the complete display of the magic of Middle-Earth, where we see myths, legends, culture, languages, everything that the author created in what even seems like a complete universe. There are so many things, so many details, that it is truly amazing how only one person was able to imagine it all. I will never get tired of saying that Tolkien is unrivaled.

One of the things I liked the most, although frankly I liked everything, is that the characters are deep. None of them are simple, none of them are fillers, they all have a well-structured story with clear motivations and purpose. I also love that they are all vulnerable in some way, they are not the perfect heroes nor the absolute villains (except Sauron, of course). You can see the flaws as well as the virtues of each one, which allows you to sympathize with them, making them unforgettable. I think that is particularly difficult to achieve in fantasy stories because you have so many things happening at once, so many subplots plus the main one that it is easy to get lost, but this does not happen to Tolkien. Everything is perfectly calculated even though there are many things going on simultaneously, because he paid all the necessary attention to make the best story possible. I won't dwell on the big battle too much because all I can say is that it's the most epic thing I've ever read. It's perfect. On the other hand, there were characters that stole my heart. For example, The Ents, mystical creatures of the forests, trees with souls that protect their own and their beautiful green home. Beings that barely notice the passage of time but appreciate it as a treasure because it is what gives them that venerable wisdom they possess. Then there are the elves, who appear from the first book but about whom I didn't talk much in the previous post. These are also creatures of the forest, bold, perceptive, agile and intelligent, full of magic. I have a thing for creatures of the forest. I also love Gollum, yes, I love that spiteful and ragged thing. He is a character who has more depth than he appears to have, and his story can be interpreted as the consequence of avarice, someone who lost everything in order to have power, becoming something completely different from what he once was. He became a beast, a creature consumed by hatred, a truly miserable being who, at some time too distant to be remembered well, was someone pure. It is also evident in this character a representation of dissociative personality disorder, better known as multiple personality disorder. Gollum and Smeagol are the two personalities of this creature, the first one being the one we see most of the time, and the second, Smeagol, being that fearful, honest and good part that he once was, before the precious changed everything.

It is important to understand that this disorder does not mean anything bad, although unfortunately it is common to use it to give rise to villains; nothing could be further from the truth. However, in this case it is a very good way to give meaning to a peculiar characteristic of a character. Smeagol lived through a deep trauma that his mind, on the verge of collapsing, found no other way to cope with the situation than this. Let's say that his personality somehow fragmented to generate one part and suppress another, the one more aware of the pain. We have to be honest, it is a very interesting origin, whether the character is a villain or not. Although honestly for me he is none of that, Gollum is just a wretch. Two other characters that I love with all my heart are Aragorn and Gandalf, both quite similar. They are brave, wise, strong, powerful and also vulnerable. Despite being heroes, they are not perfect. We see this several times, like when Gandalf falls (a moment where I cried) or when Aragorn is unsure of how to continue. However, despite their flaws and fears, they are able to move forward, doing what needs to be done for the greater good, the good of others. They are spectacular from start to finish, and this is the one you'll probably read in no time, because it will leave you wanting to know what happens, making it impossible to tear yourself away from its pages. It's the perfect fantasy, there will never be a story like this one.

Sinopsis

La compañía se ha disuelto, todo se volvió un caos. Dejan de buscar a Frodo dado el repentino ataque de los orcos, donde Boromir perece. Frodo intenta escapar no solo para salvar su vida, sino que él sabe que la vida de los demás corre peligro mientras él esté cerca. Al mismo tiempo Aragorn, Legolas y Gimli intentan encontrar a Merry y Pipin, desistiendo en cierta parte de buscar a Frodo puesto que a su manera, Aragorn y el resto entienden que así debe ser. Por supuesto Frodo no partió solo, Sam va con él. Lo diré ya, es mi libro favorito. Tiene acción, tiene drama, es emocionante, entretenido, interesante. Lo tiene todo. Creo que es justamente en este punto de la historia donde Tolkien demuestra con mayor claridad porqué es quien es hoy en día y porqué su obra fue tan increíble. No es solo el gran detalle con el que describe absolutamente todo lo ocurrido, también es la manera excepcional de escribir una historia que se siente como una montaña rusa de emociones. Lloras la muerte, te llena de ternura la amistad verdadera, te emocionan las batallas que son épicas, te llenas de intriga con Gollum o con los Ents y te angustias tanto como Frodo bajo la influencia del Anillo. Todo en solo un libro que va escalando en intensidad. Además es el despliegue completo de la magia de Tierra Media, donde vemos mitos, leyendas, cultura, idiomas, todo lo que el autor creó en lo que incluso llega a parecer un universo completo. Hay tantas cosas, tantos detalles que es verdaderamente impresionante cómo tan solo una persona fue capaz de imaginarlo todo. Jamás me cansaré de decir que Tolkien es innigualable.

De las cosas que más me gustaron, aunque francamente todo me gustó, es que los personajes son profundos. Ninguno es simple, ninguno es relleno, todos tienen una historia bien estructurada con motivaciones claras y con propósito. Me encanta también que todos de alguna manera son vulnerables, no son los héroes perfectos ni los villanos absolutos (excepto Sauron, por supuesto). Puedes ver los defectos así como las virtudes de cada uno, lo que te permite simpatizar con ellos haciéndolos innolvidables. Creo que eso es particularmente difícil de lograr en historias de fantasía porque tienes tantas cosas ocurriendo a la vez, tantas subtramas más la principal que es fácil perderte, pero esto no le ocurre a Tolkien. Todo está perfectamente calculado a pesar de que sí hayan muchas cosas en simultáneo, porque prestó toda la atención necesaria para hacer la mejor historia posible. No me detendré mucho a hablar de la gran batalla porque todo lo que puedo decir es que es lo más épico que jamás he leído. Es perfecta. Por otro lado, hubo personajes que se robaron mi corazón. Por ejemplo, Los Ents, criaturas místicas de los bosques, árboles con alma que protegen a los suyos y su hermoso verde hogar. Seres que apenas notan el paso del tiempo pero lo aprecian como un tesoro porque es lo que les aporta esa sabiduría venerable que poseen. Además están los elfos, que aparecen desde el primer libro pero de los que no hablé mucho en el post pasado. Estos también son criaturas del bosque, audaces, perspicazes, ágiles e inteligentes, llenos de magia. Tengo una predilección por criaturas del bosque. También amo a Gollum, sí, me encanta esa cosa rencorosa y andrajosa. Es un personaje que tiene más profundidad de la que aparenta, pudiendo interpretarse su historia como la consecuencia de la avaricia, alguien que lo perdió todo con tal de tener poder, convirtiéndose en algo completamente distinto a lo que un día fue. Se volvió una bestia, una criatura consumida por el odio, un ser verdaderamente miserable que en algún tiempo demasiado lejano para ser recordado bien, fue alguien puro. Es a la vez evidente en este personaje una representación del trastorno disociativo de la personalidad, mejor conocido como trastorno de personalidad múltiple. Gollum y Sméagol son las dos personalidades de esta criatura, siendo la perimera la que vemos la mayor parte del tiempo, y la segunda, Sméagol, es aquella parte temerosa, honesta y buena que alguna vez fue, antes de que el precioso lo cambiara todo.

Es importante entender que este trastorno no significa nada malo, auqnue lamentablemente es común que lo utilicen para darle origen a los villanos; nada más lejos de la realidad. Sin embargo, en este caso es una manera muy buena de darle un sentido a una característica peculiar de un personaje. Sméagol vivió un profundo trauma que su mente a punto de colapsar no encontró otra manera de sobrellevar la situación que esto. Digamos que su personalidad de alguna manera se fragmentó para generar una parte y suprimir otra, aquella más consciente del dolor. Hay que ser sinceros, es un origen demasiado interesante, sea el personaje un villano o no. Aunque sinceramente para mí no es nada de eso, Gollum es solo un desdichado. Otros dos personajes que amo con todo mi corazón son Aragorn y Gandalf, ambos bastante similares. Son valientes, sabios, fuertes, poderosos y además vulnerables. Apesar de ser unos héroes no son perfectos, lo vemos varias veces como cuando Gandalf cae (momento donde lloré) o cuando Aragorn se muestra inseguro al no saber cómo continuar. Sin embargo, con sus defectos y sus miedos son capaces de seguir adelante, haciendo lo que se tenga que hacer por el bien mayor, el bien de los demás. Son espectaculares de inicio a fin, siendo éste el que probalemente te leas en poco tiempo, porque te dejará la necesidad de saber que pasa, siendo imposible despegarte de sus páginas. Es la fantasía perfecta, jamás habrá una historia como esta.
