--- Today, 18 May, is International Museum Day, but the city is also celebrating the 175th anniversary of the San Telmo School of Art. To mark the first event, several museums will be opening their doors free of charge today and will also be hosting other special events, particularly as Málaga is a world-renowned city of art, boasting the highest number of museums per capita in the world. To mark the second celebration, a brilliant exhibition on the history of this art school is currently being held at the Palacio or Customs Museum. >Hoy 18 de mayo es el día internacional de los museos, pero también en la ciudad se está celebrando el 175 aniversario de la Escuela de arte de San Telmo. Para mí hoy es un día muy especial, tengo la dicha de estar en esta ciudad que me ofrece arte en cada lugar, en cada rincón, museos variados, muestras de arte cada cierta cantidad de tiempo, galerías de arte gratuitas y mucho más. Por eso hoy es un gran día. Pero además haber podido participar de esta fabulosa exposición dedicada al arte y a un aniversario tan importante me llena de alegría. Se realiza bajo el slogan “La escuela que hizo ciudad” y está en exhibición hasta el 24 de junio de este año. Si bien todos los textos explicativos de la exposición están en español, trataré de contarles acerca de ellos.

Today is a very special day for me; I am lucky enough to be in this city, which offers art everywhere I look, in every corner, with a wide variety of museums, regular art exhibitions, free art galleries and much more. That is why today is such a great day. But also, having been able to take part in this fabulous exhibition dedicated to art and such an important anniversary fills me with joy. La entrada ya era impresionante, donde me esperaba una gran escultura. A mediados del siglo XIX, Málaga era uno de los grandes focos de la Revolución Industrial en el país. Su puerto tenía un intenso comercio internacional y gran industria, tanto textil, metalúrgica y agro-alimentaria. La prosperidad trajo toda clase de profesionales y entre ellos artistas, sumado al surgimiento de la burguesía ilustrada, desarrollando así mucha actividad cultural. Así surge la necesidad de enseñanza artística y es como se crea en 1851 la Escuela de Arte de San Telmo dando formación en dibujo, técnica dentro de la modernidad. Hoy es referente de la vida cultural y proyección artística de la ciudad. La sala era enorme y había entradas o secciones dedicadas a un tema en especial. Pero en todos estos lugares había la explicación suficiente, además de la presencia de guías y guardia de seguridad ya que las obras de arte expuestas son de mucho valor. Para realizar esta exposición se valieron de muchas obras que se encuentran en la segunda planta del museo, la zona de las bellas artes. De esa manera explicaban la evolución y la historia de la Escuela de San Telmo. Como a fines del siglo XVIII todo lo referido a enseñanza de oficios se realizaba en forma particular y eso era una enseñanza lenta e irregular, el estado es quien asumió la formación de los artesanos. Esto se llevó a cabo en el siglo XIX. Así se crearon muchas escuelas de bellas artes y academias tanto de primera o segunda clase, sea que se tratara de artistas o artesanos. La escuela de Bellas Artes de Málaga esta catalogada como de segunda clase. Pero se dispuso que las de segunda clase podían ascender a primera. Todo esto significó una gran transformación a nivel artístico. La academia y la escuela se abrió por primera vez en la calle Compañía en un convento jesuita y el éxito fue tal que debieron abrir lista de espera.

The entrance was already impressive, with a large sculpture awaiting me. In the mid-19th century, Málaga was one of the major centres of the Industrial Revolution in the country. Its port was a hub of international trade and major industry, including textiles, metallurgy and agri-food. This prosperity attracted all manner of professionals, including artists, alongside the emergence of an enlightened bourgeoisie, thus fostering a vibrant cultural scene. This gave rise to the need for art education, leading to the creation in 1851 of the San Telmo School of Art, which provided training in drawing, a technique at the forefront of modernity. Today, it is a benchmark for the city’s cultural life and artistic influence. The hall was enormous and there were sections dedicated to specific themes. But in all these areas there were sufficient explanations, as well as the presence of guides and security guards, given that the works of art on display are of great value. To stage this exhibition, they drew on many works located on the second floor of the museum, the fine arts section. In this way, they explained the evolution and history of the San Telmo School. As by the end of the 18th century, all vocational training was carried out privately—a slow and irregular process—the state took over the training of artisans. This took place in the 19th century. Thus, many fine arts schools and academies were established, both first- and second-class, whether for artists or artisans. The School of Fine Arts in Málaga is classified as a second-class institution. However, it was stipulated that second-class institutions could be promoted to first class. All this signified a major transformation in the artistic sphere. Una de las primeras secciones de la exposición estaba dedicada a los primeros años de la escuela y más precisamente al dibujo. Esto me recordó mis años de estudiante y como era prioritario aprender a dibujar cada parte del cuerpo humano. También me recordó lo difícil que era dibujar manos, pies, rostros, los detalles. Muchos recuerdos vinieron a mi mente. La escuela abrió con un plan sencillo de estudios, cinco asignaturas centradas en el dibujo, modelado, vaciado del adorno, nociones de aritmética y geometría aplicada. El dibujo era el eje central. La escuela era modesta, pero cumplía con el objetivo cultural. Se generaba una nueva sensibilidad artística. Tal como aprendí en mis comienzos, la metodología se basaba en la copia, al carboncillo y lápiz graso, de modelos de escayola y también se utilizaban láminas litografiadas. Había un apartado dedicado a la clase de modelado y vaciado y sobre todo hablaba de las figuras de barro como una tradición arraigada y en pleno auge en esa época.

One of the first sections of the exhibition was devoted to the school’s early years, and more specifically to drawing. This reminded me of my own school days and how learning to draw every part of the human body was a priority. It also reminded me of how difficult it was to draw hands, feet, faces and the finer details. Many memories came flooding back. The school opened with a simple curriculum: five subjects focused on drawing, modelling, casting of ornaments, and the basics of arithmetic and applied geometry. Drawing was the central focus. The school was modest, but it fulfilled its cultural purpose. A new artistic sensibility was emerging. Just as I had learnt in my early days, the methodology was based on copying, using charcoal and soft pencil, from plaster models, and lithographic prints were also used. Con la era de Ferrándiz se aplicó una nueva enseñanza no basándose solamente en el copiado, ya que promovió un cambio grande en el plan de estudios. Se introdujo la litografía y el método basado en la observación, memoria y composición. Quería que la escuela subiera a primera clase. Buscaba unir arte, ciencia e industria. Así en 1878 se creo la clase de señoritas, y de esa manera ahora el arte podía ser desarrollado por mujeres también. Al comienzo la orientación fue doméstica: bordado, decoración textil o pintura de flores o bodegones. A pesar de eso la iniciativa fue pionera.

During Ferrándiz’s tenure, a new teaching approach was introduced that was not based solely on copying, as he promoted a major overhaul of the curriculum. Lithography was introduced, along with a method based on observation, memory and composition. He wanted the school to rise to the highest level. He sought to unite art, science and industry. Thus, in 1878, the girls’ class was established, meaning that art could now be pursued by women as well. Initially, the focus was on domestic arts: embroidery, textile decoration, and the painting of flowers or still lifes. Una de las partes de la exposición que también me emocionó fue la dedicada al diseño gráfico y como nació en la ciudad. Fue gracias a la litografía que se hizo posible y que además ella es la que ayudó en la creación de imágenes para la industria y el comercio. Los carteles eran los ejemplos más visibles y así se anunciaban fiestas, espectáculos y productos. Muchos de los que se dedicaban a hacer carteles fueron primeramente artistas.

Another part of the exhibition that really moved me was the section devoted to graphic design and how it came about in the city. It was thanks to lithography that this became possible, and it was also lithography that helped create images for industry and commerce. Posters were the most visible examples of this, and they were used to advertise festivals, shows and products. La siguiente sección estaba dedicada al impulso del siglo XX. Había habido una gran evolución y avance, la academia se separa de la escuela. La escuela de San Telmo entró en una gran transformación, reorganizando las enseñanzas profesionales bajo la denominación de Escuelas de industrias y bellas artes. Esto trajo una mejora en la formación de los pintores. Luego se separó los estudios industriales de los artísticos, apareciendo así asignaturas prácticas y talleres especializados, como imprenta, cerámica, carpintería y mucho más. Hay muchas consideraciones respecto de las litografías y su avance como así muchos ejemplos en la exposición desde carteles, cuadros y muchos trabajos que estaban expuestos en vitrinas.

The following section was devoted to the developments of the 20th century. There had been significant evolution and progress, with the academy separating from the school. The San Telmo School underwent a major transformation, reorganising vocational training under the name ‘Schools of Industry and Fine Arts’. This led to an improvement in the training of painters. Industrial studies were then separated from artistic ones, leading to the introduction of practical subjects and specialised workshops, such as printing, ceramics, carpentry and much more. Uno de los acontecimientos más importantes de la escuela fue estar presente en la exposición iberoamericana de Sevilla en 1929. Significo una proyección para la ciudad. Se presentaron obras del profesorado y alumnado que reflejaban el nivel de la escuela, la amplitud de la enseñanza, la variedad de trabajos, como escultura, forja, azulejería, encuadernación. Y aquí en la exposición lo que más pude ver fueron esculturas, capiteles y encuadernaciones. Unos libros antiguos de gran tamaño que llamaron mucho mi atención. Libros de enseñanzas artísticas del año 1929 con encuadernaciones en cuero repujado.

One of the school’s most significant events was its participation in the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville in 1929. This brought the school to the city’s attention. Works by both staff and students were displayed, showcasing the school’s high standards, the breadth of its teaching, and the variety of disciplines, such as sculpture, metalwork, tile-making and bookbinding. And here at the exhibition, what I saw most were sculptures, capitals and bookbindings. Some large, old books really caught my eye. Un aparatado mostraba la litografía y la relación con la escuela, su desarrollo durante el siglo XIX. Las artes crecían al ritmo de la industrialización y la escuela se convirtió en el principal espacio de aprendizaje de saberes técnicos y artísticos que exigía esta disciplina. Hubo una gran producción gráfica de extraordinaria calidad tanto técnica como visual y Málaga se convirtió en uno de los grandes centros de litografía española.

One section showcased lithography and its connection to the school, as well as its development throughout the 19th century. The arts flourished alongside industrialisation, and the school became the primary venue for learning the technical and artistic skills required by this discipline. La última sección trataba sobre las exposiciones y la modernidad, ya que la burguesía se encargó de convertir las exposiciones en símbolo de progreso y modernidad. Surgieron certámenes de arte, industria y agricultura. Se desarrollaban exposiciones de bellas artes en fiestas cívicas o visitas reales, eran un espacio de encuentro para los artistas, instituciones y el público en general. A partir de 1870 las exposiciones tuvieron más calidad por la participación de profesores y alumnos de la Escuela de San Telmo, obteniendo mucho reconocimiento. Todo ello reforzaba la idea de que el arte como la industria eran expresiones del progreso y orgullo colectivo de una ciudad en transformación. Toda la exposición ha sido brillante y me encanta haber participado de ella, aprender y salir de allí sabiendo la historia de esta escuela y hoy en el día internacional de los muesos es mi manera de festejar este gran evento. The final section dealt with exhibitions and modernity, as the bourgeoisie took it upon themselves to turn exhibitions into a symbol of progress and modernity. Competitions in the arts, industry and agriculture began to emerge. Fine art exhibitions were held during civic festivals or royal visits, serving as a meeting place for artists, institutions and the general public. From 1870 onwards, the exhibitions improved in quality thanks to the participation of teachers and students from the San Telmo School, earning them widespread recognition. All of this reinforced the idea that art, like industry, was an expression of progress and the collective pride of a city undergoing transformation. The whole exhibition has been brilliant and I’m delighted to have taken part in it, to have learnt and left knowing the history of this school; and today, on International Museum Day, this is my way of celebrating this great event.
