I glance from her to myself. My scuffed flat shoe is almost screaming for help. I wore the same black skirt I had worn twice already this week, my hair tied back in a bun because braids have become too expensive. Somehow I felt small beside her, like she had bent Lagos to her will, while I am the one bent by Lagos.

Curator's comment :

zerah brings us a heartfelt CNF set on a bus ride in Lagos. She anchors her story in the raw realities of Lagos life, the hustle and bustle, the heat, and the struggle. She recognises a woman from her street on the bus, wearing expensive clothes and a handbag, with her hair done up. She considers her with envy until she overhears the woman's conversations and sees things on her phone. She realises that behind the facade, there is a deeper struggle than her own, and her envy turns to empathy, creating a lovely arc for the story. An enjoyable read.
