El aroma que desprende el sobre me recuerda su perfume: huele a naranja con almíbar. Las velas susurran en las esquinas, cantan en fuego y danzan como mujeres doradas, obligándome a mirar la carta que hay dentro. Admito que, para ser una invitación de la Condesa, tiene un cierto tono femenino. Ella no es una mujer de colores brillantes, más bien, se ha refugiado en el negro desde la muerte de sus hijos. Y sin embargo, ahora parece que los cadáveres de su familia han desaparecido de sus pasatiempos, y que desea una segunda oportunidad para su desafortunada vida. ¿O solo quiere atormentarme? Esta carta la ha escrito ella; reconozco su letra itálica con puntos perfectamente ubicados en las frases de interés. La condesa quiere que vaya al baile otoñal, aunque intuyo otro deseo en su ferviente corazón. ¿Por qué habrá rociado la carta con el antiguo perfume de su hermana? Quizás para enviar un mensaje oculto o despertar mis malestares; tristezas de la pérdida que sufrí hace tres inviernos. Oh, mi amada Bella, flor marchita en mis manos, cristal reluciente que ahora guarda su luz en el inframundo… ¿Qué intentas condesa? ¿Por qué quieres recordarme la tragedia de antaño? ¡Decidí superarlo! ¡Elegí aferrarme al aliento del porvenir! ¡Tu hermana y tú están en el pasado! La última vez que visité el castillo fue para el funeral. Aquel día fue soleado y verde, aunque dentro de mí solo había una gran tormenta. Vi el sarcófago de Bella, y bajo el cristal su rostro de labios cosidos. Abracé el ataúd, implorando que ella despertara de su eterno letargo y me abrazara. La Condesa, por otro lado, fue incapaz de asistir al velatorio; se encerró en su habitación por un mes, olvidando por completo al resto de su familia. Sus hijos murieron después por causas inexplicables: los encontraron en sus respectivas habitaciones, con los ojos bien abiertos, como mirando al ser que les había arrebatado el alma. Desde entonces no tardó en regarse por todo el mundo que la condesa estaba maldita, y que llevaba la muerte entre sus pies. Mucho tiempo después, me es imposible recordar su rostro, quizás porque la visión de mi mente únicamente tiene lugar para su hermana: Bella, la jovencita pálida de labios muy rojos y rostro redondo, y ojos negros, profundos, semejantes a la oscuridad que impregna los rincones de esta habitación. Nunca dejó de ser hermosa, aun cuando la fiebre amarilla la enterró en el delirio y se arrojó por la ventana de su habitación cantando una melodía angelical, eso según lo cuentan los propios sirvientes del aquel castillo maldito. Olfateo la carta para impregnarme con el olor de mi amada, consiente, además, de que debo aceptar la invitación de la condesa. Si bien estos últimos tiempos he estado libre del sufrimiento, el respeto que guardo hacia Bella me obliga a cumplir con mi honor. Decidido a viajar durante largos días, encargo mi mansión solitaria a mis fieles sabuesos y me despido de la morada de puertas rechinantes. Antes de subir a la carroza miro atrás una última vez, y en una de las ventanas veo la silueta de una mujer que se despide; ¡fantasmas que se burlan de mi! ¡Espectros que reaparecen para advertirme de un inexistente peligro! “Ella espera…” susurran los árboles desnudos, y luego empiezan a reír. Me subo a la carroza y suspiro mientras el buen Eleodoro hace cabalgar a los caballos. El camino es largo y peligroso, acompañado de noches de luna llena y lobos hambrientos. El castillo de la condesa es la única edificación de piedra y mármol en un vasto valle cubierto de pantanos y bosques espesos. En el pasado, prometí sacar a Bella de esa zona de las lejanías, pues ella merecía estar en un lugar igual de hermoso que ella, con jardines en flor repletos de naranjos. No obstante, el día que se lo ofrecí, se negó con la excusa de proteger a la Condesa y a sus hijos, pues ella era lo único con lo que podía contar su hermana en la difícil cólera del divorcio. Y sin embargo Bella no pudo protegerse así misma de aquella terrible enfermedad, arrastrada quizás por las infundadas obligaciones que ella misma se atribuyó. Los difuntos niños de la Condesa decían que Bella invocaba a los ángeles con sus canciones. ¡Imaginación inocente al fin! Claro que, mi amada parecía bendecida por una clase de fuerza sobrenatural, capaz de reparar la agonía de un corazón rasgado. Cuando dormía junto a ella le relataba mis miedos y preocupaciones, y después sentía su mano acariciando mi nariz. Me dormía tras la larga charla, aunque a veces despertaba y la veía mirando por la ventana al cielo de luna redonda… Hubiera deseado estar en su habitación el día en que se aventó de la ventana. Eleodoro detiene la marcha de los caballos en la puerta del castillo. Al bajar de la carroza noto la profunda oscuridad sobre el mundo, únicamente diferenciada por la lámpara de aceite que tintinea sobre la aldaba. Tres toques en la madera tallada son suficientes para que los sirvientes me reciban con sus trajes negros. En el piano suena la pieza más lúgubre que he oído en mi vida; la canción del Velo Negro, aquella que relata la danza de la vida y la muerte entre sus acordes. Mientras me niego al vino que me ofrecen, rastreo el salón con ojos cuidadosos. El resto de los invitados parecen estatuas en su silencio inmóvil, por tal motivo, intento desviar la mirada de sus rostros cubiertos. Siento que me observan sin observarme, y que esperan un descuido para destrozarme con sus dedos. ¿Qué es este frío en mi piel? ¿Por qué tan de pronto deseo gritar hasta desgarrar mi garganta? Antifaces dorados flotan en la sombras, acercándose a mí con el brillo de ojos sangrientos. Retrocedo sin perder la cordura, y el fuego en la chimenea, que atrapa mi pie derecho, me trae de vuelta a la realidad. ¡Sueños del recuerdo! ¡Solo estoy alucinando! Apago las llamas con pisotones mientras siento las burlas silentes de los enmascarados elegantes. Lo siguiente que pasa es mucho más extraño aún: un sirviente alto y enlutado se acerca con la mirada baja, y susurra a mi oído: —Sir Julián, la Condesa desea verlo. Interesado en huir del salón espectral y los enmascarados elegantes, sigo al sirviente para encontrarme con la condesa. Más allá de las escaleras de caracol, en la antigua habitación de Bella, la condesa aguarda aferrada a la cornisa de la ventana. No quiero acercarme, más sin embargo mis pies me obligan. Ella huele a naranjas con almíbar… ella huele a Bella. A pesar de que estamos lejos del salón de bailes, puedo escuchar la canción: vida y muerte en una danza eterna. Cuando la condesa se voltea, miro el velo negro que deja ver apenas un rostro pálido y redondo… —Ya sé cómo traerlos de vuelta. —Dice la Condesa al deslizar sus dedos gélidos por mis labios. Mi lágrima impregna su mano, y aunque no puedo ver su rostro, siento que sonríe. Ella y yo perdimos un fragmento de nuestros corazones, y ahora, en la víspera eterna, sé que la Condesa intenta mostrarme la única forma posible de reencontrarme con Bella. Entiendo que el plan contempla solo su muerte y no la de ambos, y que su velo negro ha puesto un embrujo sobre mí. La veo deslizarse hasta la ventana mientras yo observo la luna que hay detrás, sin ánimo alguno de detenerla. Parece que su cuerpo cae lentamente al vacío, más allá de la cornisa, esperando el impacto contra el mármol de las caminerías. El crujir de los huesos de la Condesa rompe con la indiferencia de mi mente, y entonces corro para intentar auxiliarla tras la caída. Al pasar por el salón de bailes, me encuentro con los enmascarados danzando el vals del Velo Negro, haciendo caso o miso a mis gritos de pavor. —¡La condesa está herida! —Los pongo en alerta—. ¡Debemos ayudarla! Pero ninguno de ellos respondió al llamado, así que los ignoré y salí del castillo para ayudar a la Condesa. Ella usó sus dedos pálidos para develar su rostro, y aquel conjuro volvió a paralizar mis sentidos. —Te extrañé. —Dijo. Su voz había cambiado, también el rostro que nunca vi o que ya no recuerdo. Frente a mi estaba Bella, el amor de vida… la mujer que volvió de la muerte gracias al sacrificio de su hermana.

The aroma that the envelope gives off reminds me of its perfume: it smells like orange with syrup. Candles rustle in the corners, sing in fire and dance like golden women, forcing me to look at the letter inside. I admit that, for an invitation from the Countess, it has a certain feminine tone. She is not a brightly colored woman, rather, she has taken refuge in black since the death of her children. And yet, it now seems that the corpses of her family have disappeared from her hobbies, and that she wants a second chance for her unfortunate life. Or does she just want her to torment me? This letter has been written by her; I recognize your italics with perfectly placed dots in the phrases of interest. The Countess wants her to go to the Autumn Ball, though she senses another desire in her fervent heart. Why would she have sprinkled the letter with her sister's old perfume? Perhaps to send a hidden message or awaken my discomfort; sadness of the loss I suffered three winters ago. Oh, my beloved Bella, withered flower in my hands, glittering crystal that now keeps its light in the underworld... What are you trying countess? Why do you want to remind me of the tragedy of yesteryear? I decided to get over it! I chose to cling to the breath of the future! You and your sister are in the past! The last time I visited the castle was for the funeral. That day was sunny and green, although inside me there was only a great storm. I saw Bella's sarcophagus, and under her glass her face with sewn lips. I hugged the coffin, imploring her to wake up from her eternal slumber and hug me. The Countess, on the other hand, was unable to attend the wake; she locked herself in her room for a month, completely forgetting the rest of her family. Her children later died of inexplicable causes: they were found in their respective rooms, with their eyes wide open, as if looking at the being that had snatched their soul. Since then, it was not long before it spread throughout the world that the countess was cursed, and that she carried death between her feet. A long time later, it is impossible for me to remember her face, perhaps because the vision in my mind only has room for her sister: Bella, the pale girl with very red lips and a round face, and deep black eyes, similar to the darkness that permeates the corners of this room. She never ceased to be beautiful, even when yellow fever buried her in her delirium and she threw herself out the window of her room singing an angelic melody, according to what the servants of that cursed castle say. I sniff the letter to impregnate myself with the scent of my beloved, and she is also aware that I must accept the countess's invitation. Although in recent times I have been free of suffering, the respect I have for Bella forces me to fulfill my honor. Determined to travel for long days, I entrust my lonely mansion to my faithful hounds and bid farewell to the abode with the creaking doors. Before getting on the carriage I look back one last time, and in one of the windows I see the silhouette of a woman waving goodbye; ghosts that make fun of me! Ghosts that reappear to warn me of non-existent danger! “She waits…” the bare trees whisper, and then they start laughing. I get on the carriage and sigh while the good Eleodoro makes the horses ride. The road is long and dangerous, accompanied by full moon nights and hungry wolves. The castle of the countess is the only stone and marble building in a vast valley covered with swamps and thick forests. In the past, I promised to get Bella out of that remote area, because she deserved to be in a place just as beautiful as her, with blooming gardens full of orange trees. However, the day I offered it to her, she refused with the excuse of protecting the Countess and her children, since she was the only thing her sister could count on in the difficult anger of the divorce. And yet Bella could not protect herself from that terrible disease, dragged perhaps by the unfounded obligations that she attributed to herself. The deceased children of the Countess said that Belle invoked the angels with her songs. Innocent imagination at last! Of course, my beloved seemed blessed by a kind of supernatural force, capable of repairing the agony of a torn heart. When I slept next to her I would tell her about my fears and concerns, and then I would feel her hand caressing my nose. She put me to sleep after her long talk, although sometimes I woke up and saw her looking out the window at the round moon sky... She wished she was in her room the day she jumped out the window. Eleodoro stops the horses at the castle gate. Stepping down from the carriage he noted the deep darkness over the world, only differentiated by the tinkling oil lamp on the knocker. Three taps on the carved wood are enough for the servants to greet me in their black suits. They invite me to go to the room with wide corridors, indicating the way to the great ballroom; in it the shadows play with the light as if they were going to devour it, covering the guests with golden masks in the twilight. A masquerade ball? On the piano plays the most lugubrious piece I've ever heard in my life; the song of the Black Veil, the one that recounts the dance of life and death between its chords. Refusing the offered wine, I scan the room with careful eyes. The rest of the guests seem like statues in their immobile silence, for this reason, I try to look away from their covered faces. I feel that they are looking at me without looking at me, and that they are waiting for an oversight to destroy me with their fingers. What is this cold on my skin? Why do I suddenly want to scream until my throat is ripped out? Golden masks float in the shadows, closing in on me with the gleam of bloody eyes. I back up without losing my sanity, and the fire in the fireplace, which catches my right foot, brings me back to reality. Memory dreams! I'm just freaking out! I stamp out the flames as I feel the silent jeers of the elegant masked men. The next thing that happens is even stranger: a tall, mourning servant approaches with lowered eyes, and whispers in my ear: 'Sir Julian, the Countess wishes to see you.” Interested in escaping from the spectral hall and the elegant masqueraders, I follow the servant to meet the countess. Beyond the spiral stairs, in Belle's old room, the Countess waits clinging to the window ledge. I don't want to get close, but my feet force me. She smells like oranges with syrup…she smells like Bella. Even though we are far from the ballroom, I can hear the song: life and death in an eternal dance. When the countess turns around, I look at the black veil that barely reveals a round, pale face... “I already know how to bring them back.” The Countess says as she slides her icy fingers across my lips. My tear soaks her hand, and although I can't see her face, I feel her smile. She and I lost a piece of our hearts, and now, on Everlasting Eve, I know that the Countess is trying to show me the only possible way to reunite with Bella. This darkness feels so peaceful, so liberating… so magical. I understand that the plan contemplates only her death and not both of them, and that her black veil has put a spell on my body. I watch her slide to the window while I watch the moon behind her, not wanting to stop her. It seems that her body slowly falls into the void, beyond the ledge, waiting for the impact against the marble walkways. The creak of the Countess's bones breaks the indifference in my mind, and then I run to try to help her after she fell. Passing through the ballroom, I find the masked men dancing the Black Veil waltz, heeding my cries of terror. "The countess is injured!" I put them on alert. “We must help her!” But none of them answered the call, so I ignored them and left the castle to help the Countess. She used her pale fingers to reveal her face, and that spell paralyzed my senses again. “I missed you.” She said. Her voice had changed, also the face that I never saw or of which I no longer remember. In front of me was Bella, the love of life… the woman who came back from the dead thanks to the sacrifice of her sister.
