You will have to pay to publish the contract. Ropsten ETH isn’t real ETH though. If you don’t have Ropsten ETH look up the Ropsten faucet to get some.

If this is still an issue and the coin gave a contract address, audit the contract on EtherScan to see if the coins are in there. If they are and it’s still not showing up in MetaMask I’d contact their

It depends on what the rules and values are and how they play into your bigger picture strategy. You could always create the token and then put them into another contract with rules, though.

You don't need Ethereum Wallet or Geth. Just MetaMask, then use the online solidity browser as I talked about in the tutorial.
