Hola, comunidad de Hive. ¡Espero que todas se encuentren muy bien! Hoy quiero hablarles un poco sobre mi transición a los rizos y compartir mi historia de amor/odio con mi cabello.

Hello Hive community, I hope you're all doing great! Today I want to tell you a little bit about my transition to curls and share my love/hate story with my hair.

Cuando nací, mi mamá me cuenta que mi cabello no era ni liso ni rizado, sino una mezcla de ondas que crecía en una sola dirección: hacia arriba 😂. No tenía forma de nada y era un cabello bastante feo, así que mi mamá decidió cortármelo, dejándome pelona. A partir de ahí, me creció de forma uniforme y rizada, y lo más importante, hacia abajo. Usé mi cabello rizado hasta más o menos los 9 o 10 años, ya que en ese entonces no había tanto conocimiento sobre los métodos para cuidar los rizos. Al contrario, mi mamá me sentaba en un banco más bajo que el de ella para peinarme (en seco), y se podrán imaginar el sufrimiento tan grande 😂. Para mí, ser rizada era sinónimo de que mi mamá me jaloneaba el cabello y también de fealdad.

When I was born, my mom tells me that my hair was neither straight nor curly, but a mixture of waves that grew in only one direction: up 😂. It had no shape at all and it was pretty ugly hair, so my mom decided to cut it off, leaving me bald. From there, it grew out evenly and curly, and most importantly, downwards. I wore my hair curly until I was about 9 or 10 years old, because back then there wasn't so much knowledge about methods to take care of curls. On the contrary, my mom would sit me on a bench lower than hers to comb my hair (dry), and you can imagine the suffering 😂. For me, being curly was synonymous with my mom pulling my hair and also with ugliness.

En aquellos tiempos, los rizos estaban muy poco normalizados. Si eras rizada, automáticamente te asociaban con no peinarte, "tenías piojos" o "te veías menos profesional". Incluso en películas, series o novelas, decían que la chica era "fea" o menos atractiva por tener el cabello rizado/ondulado, como si ser rizada te hiciera más o menos bonita. Todo esto, sumado al hecho de no conocer buenas rutinas para definir los rizos, hizo que muchas niñas como yo quisiéramos cambiar nuestro cabello.

In those days, curls were not very normalized. If you were curly, you were automatically associated with not combing your hair, "you had lice" or "you looked less professional". Even in movies, series or novels, they said that the girl was "ugly" or less attractive for having curly/curly hair, as if being curly made you more or less pretty. All this, added to the fact of not knowing good routines to define curls, made many girls like me want to change our hair.

Así que aproximadamente a partir de los 9 años comencé a planchar mi cabello, utilizaba keratinas, y un sin fin de productos para eliminar mis rizos, y así por muchos años hasta los 15 años

At about the age of 9, I started flat ironing my hair. I used keratins and a myriad of products to eliminate my curls, and I spent many years like that until I was 15.

Antes de mi fiesta de quince años, una amiga rizada me convenció de definir mis rizos por primera vez. Era muy persistente, así que después de un largo rato de insistir, le dije que sí. Comenzó a las 9 de la noche y terminó a las 2:00 a.m. 😂 Pero valió mucho la pena; me enamoré del resultado. Mi amiga logró lo que nunca pensé: sentirme bonita con mis rizos. Desde ese momento decidí dejarme el cabello natural. Durante los primeros meses, hice muchas mascarillas naturales de sábila, lo cual me ayudó muchísimo a restaurar mis rizos. Tenía el cabello por la cintura, pero al lavarlo tenía partes lisas y partes rizadas. En ese momento sentía doble presión porque quería que mi cabello se viera bonito con rizos y también necesitaba que se viera bien en general. Mi mamá me compró la salvación para mi cabello: un producto llamado "agua miel". Les juro que no es promoción, pero es uno de los mejores productos que he usado. Es una crema hidratante y fijadora para el cabello. Gracias a eso, mi cabello comenzó a verse mucho más bonito y también más manejable (porque en ese entonces no sabía muy bien cómo definirlo; buscaba más bien aplacarlo un poco).

Before my quinceañera, a curly friend of mine convinced me to define my curls for the first time. She was very persistent, so after a long time of insisting, I said yes. It started at 9 p.m. and ended at 2:00 a.m. 😂 But it was so worth it; I fell in love with the result. My friend achieved what I never thought: feeling pretty with my curls. From that moment on I decided to leave my hair natural. For the first few months, I did a lot of natural aloe vera masks, which helped me a lot to restore my curls. I had waist length hair, but when I washed it I had straight parts and curly parts. At that time I felt double pressure because I wanted my hair to look nice with curls and I also needed it to look good overall. My mom bought me the salvation for my hair: a product called "honey water". I swear it's not a promotion, but it's one of the best products I've ever used. It's a moisturizing and fixing hair cream. Thanks to that, my hair started to look much nicer and also more manageable (because at the time I didn't really know how to define it; I was looking to flatten it a bit).

La definición también fue un paso fundamental. Al principio, no encontraba una técnica de definición que me gustara ni un punto medio; muchas veces me hacía los rizos súper gruesos y otras veces súper delgados. Aplicaba la crema hasta la raíz sin separarlos adecuadamente... un desastre.

Definition was also a key step. In the beginning, I couldn't find a definition technique that I liked or a middle ground; many times I would make my curls super thick and other times super thin. I would apply the cream all the way to the roots without separating them properly... a disaster.

Luego de terminar el agua miel, comencé a probar otras cremas. Algunas no me hacían nada, otras me producían caspa, hasta que conocí las famosas Skala. La primera que utilicé fue la Skala azul, y hasta el momento ha sido mi favorita. Sin embargo, también he probado muchísimas más. Actualmente tengo la de "mayonesa" casi por terminar y la "babosa" casi nueva. Ninguna de estas es mi favorita, pero las he hecho funcionar. Siempre me gusta probar nuevas Skala, así como nuevos productos.

After finishing the honey water, I started to try other creams. Some did nothing for me, others gave me dandruff, until I met the famous Skala. The first one I used was the blue Skala, and so far it has been my favorite. However, I have also tried many more. I currently have the "mayonnaise" one almost finished and the "slimy" one almost new. None of these are my favorite, but I have made them work. I always like to try new Skala, as well as new products.

Hace poco me compré un nuevo cepillo definidor para rizos que he incluido en mi rutina. En este momento, utilizo la técnica de definición rizo por rizo, ya que desde que la probé por primera vez, se ha convertido en mi favorita. Aunque se puede decir que es una de las más tediosas, hasta ahora es la que mejor me funciona.

I recently bought a new curl defining brush that I have included in my routine. At the moment, I use the curl-by-curl defining technique, as since I first tried it, it has become my favorite. Although it's arguably one of the most tedious, so far it's the one that works best for me.

He cambiado las colitas de cabello tradicionales por scrunchies, que son ¡la maravilla! No se enredan en el cabello, no dejan marca y no lo parten. También trato de usar un gorrito de satín; digo "trato" porque muchas veces, cuando despierto, el gorrito está en cualquier lugar menos en mi cabeza

I've switched from traditional ponytails to scrunchies, which are a wonder! They don't tangle in the hair, they don't leave a mark and they don't split the hair. I also try to wear a satin beanie; I say "try" because many times when I wake up, the beanie is anywhere but on my head.

Los rizos no son perfectos; muchas veces tienen más frizz que otras, y eso está bien. Es algo que he aprendido con el tiempo. Lo importante es que he aprendido a amar mis rizos porque son parte de mí, de mis raíces, y son muchas de las cosas que me hacen ser quien soy. Además, ¡me dan personalidad! 😂🩷 Hoy entiendo que todos los tipos de cabello son hermosos y que ninguno es mejor o más bonito que otro. Los lisos, los rizados, los afros, los ondulados... todos son únicos y hermosos. Lo más importante es que ninguno es menos por un simple "estándar de belleza" impuesto por la sociedad.

Curls aren't perfect; many times they have more frizz than others, and that's okay. It's something I've learned over time. The important thing is that I've learned to love my curls because they are part of me, my roots, and they are a lot of the things that make me who I am. Plus, they give me personality! 😂🩷 Today I understand that all hair types are beautiful and that none is better or prettier than another. Straight, curly, afros, wavy...all are unique and beautiful. Most importantly, none is less because of a simple "standard of beauty" imposed by society.
