It's mostly lost pets, but there are abandoned animals too. I see posts locally of people rescuing strays pretty frequently. It is definitely increasing as the price of housing is forcing people out.

Even in a state of decay, the architecture matches the nature around it. The colors pop and even the peeling paint mimics the flowers around it. Whatever happened to cause the people to abandon the settlement

Yes, it can overwhelm the senses. I occasionally needed to remind myself to breathe. I did laugh at the joke, but the more I ponder on it I feel there may be a superconscious force creating with purpose.
