It's not a lost cause it's just difficult. There's 2048 words used in bip39. So the missing word could be any of those in any of 12 positions... so 24,576 different combinations. So you could get the list

I was assuming you were missing the last word, and there are scripts you can run in python to help try and find the one word you're missing as long as you know the order
