I highly recommend trying clayboard. It's roughly the same as scratch board but thicker and does not come with a coating of black ink. Instead you can paint in the black ink areas as you see fit then scratch

I don't have a specific formula I always use. I tend to switch it up depending on the piece and the vibe. Sometimes I use a lot of different textures and layers to shade, other times I just like pure black

Great tips! I think the writing aspect is lost on a lot of artists at first. It took me a while to realize that people seemed to be much more engaged with my drawings that had more written about them.
