I will definitely need to run through this challenge (at least) twice! So many singers/groups I want to share with you. Today, we're going back in time for all three songs.
First, we're going to Northern England.
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town (1984)
It's hard for me to not get nostalgic, even though I didn't live in England until the late 90s and not in the north... Still, I see this song as a historical picture of how Britain got to where it is today - and understanding the people I knew there better.
I love the words, the tune, the catchiness of the song and the fact it is very ear-wormish. Strangely, I've never ended up following them as a group - just this one great song!
For a complete change of pace, we visit with Joe Diffie, who died earlier this year. Apparently, this one is from 1990, but I loved it then and still love it now.
Joe Diffie - If the Devil Danced in Empty Pockets (1990)
One of the things I like about country music (especially that of the 80s/90s) is that they sing about the ordinary problems of ordinary people - like not having enough money to buy the used car you want/need.
Catchy tune/lyrics - as was so common with his music. It's worth a listen if you've never been one for country music.
And next, because it's Memorial Day, I have a tear-jerker that reminds us that it wasn't just the ones who died who suffered, but those left behind whose lives were touched by them. I love and hate this song - and I think you'll see why.
Dixie Chicks - Travelin Soldier (2002)
Country music often tells stories - and sometimes very sad ones. This one reminds us of the reality that is war.
This song was from 1996, but recorded by the Dixie Chicks in 2002.
