There were tricky to open, we found a hammer did a great job to shell the hard shell to get to the "meat".
These Look Good! What Do They Taste Like?
I tried the nut and it was very bitter. We learned that in order to make them useful for eating, they need to be soaked or boiled to remove the tannin. They smell sort of like caramel and taste similar to walnuts, with maybe a dark chocolate bitterness.
We're going to try boiling them to get the bitterness out of them. Then roast them and grind them into flour. We're going to try making acorn pancakes!
Stay tuned for more posts on boiling, baking and grinding acorns!
