My ultra effort at the Jackpot Ultra unfortunately came off the tracks after the halfway mark as shin splints in my left leg reduced me to a agonizing crawl after being on pace to (perhaps with luck and good effort) to finally hit 100 miles. Decided to rest and actually sleep at 14 hours to see if it helped, too bad I slept until 6 am so although my total mileage was sub par at 68.5 miles, my legs were much better and not trashed at the end. I think the zero drop Altra shoes weren't good for me at this time as things seemed better with my Hoka Bondi later in the race. Maybe I'll train in my Altras to see if it was a fluke or maybe my legs needed time to adjust to the different shoe type (or maybe I'll go back to New Balance as they've been my favorite shoes since my college days). Glad to not feel horrible the morning after and will be happy to get out for some easy training today and then concentrate on improving my diet and running going forward.
