Either by putting votes on the blockchain or reinventing democratic governance with the use of smart contracts. This is an overview of all the blockchain democracy projects around the world. Agora is a globally-focused technology company that enables verifiable and transparent elections through a revolutionary blockchain e-voting system. Created in coordination with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Agora’s platform is the first blockchain voting platform to be used in real world government elections.

Votem is a blockchain-based mobile voting platform enabling citizens around the world to easily vote online with unprecedented security and verifiability. Voteholder is developing a digital direct democracy globally, based on a software platform built with secure blockchain technology. They are aiming to take the middlemen out of government by allowing global constituents to vote on issues and solutions 24/7/365, locally, nationally and globally.
Voatz
Voatz enables citizens to vote in all kinds of elections or voting events via a smartphone. Past attempts at internet based voting have failed or not gone mainstream due to fundamental concerns around security, auditability and voter anonymity. Voatz, using biometrics for security and the Blockchain for irrefutability, is trying to tackle all these challenges and streamline the process of voting and identity verification.
Flux
Flux is a gateway Australians can use, to participate directly in parliament, making the need for trust in elected officials a thing of the past. Elected Flux MP’s and Senators give up their autonomy and use their votes in line with the outcomes produced by the Flux ecosystem. Flux's voting system isn’t run from a central server at party HQ. It is distributed across a public network, much like how Bitcoin works. This is a public ledger where anyone can verify that every vote is above board.
The Volt Project
The Volt project aims to explore applications of distributed ledger technologies (DLT) in domains involving voting and collective decision making. Volt will investigate how electronic voting can be achieved while maintaining the necessary levels of security, and in particular how this is impacted by the underlying design of any particular choice of distributed ledger technology.
Bitnation
Bitnation is the world's first Decentralized Borderless Voluntary Nation (DBVN). Bitnation started in July 2014 and hosted the world’s first blockchain marriage, birth certificate, refugee emergency ID, World Citizenship, DBVN Constitution and more. Its website, including the Public Notary proof-of-concept, is used by thousands of Bitnations Citizens and Embassies around the world. Bitnation is the winner of UNESCO’s Netexplo Award 2017.
United Vote
United.vote is a non-partisan mission-driven organization dedicated to creating smarter and more accountable governance, with liquid democracy. United Votes's app tracks how your votes compare to the votes of congressmen and provides a scorecard. It uses a simple cryptosystem for secure Internet voting, called Proof-of-Vote.
e-Estonia
Although blockchain has only become hot technology in recent years, Estonia is leading the way in the blockchain revolution- Estonian government has been testing the technology already since 2008. Since 2012, blockchain has been in operational use in Estonia’s registries, such as national health, judicial, legislative, security and commercial code systems, with plans to extend its use to other spheres such as personal medicine, cyber security and data embassies.
Liberland
Free Republic of Liberland is a sovereign state located between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube river. The country will launch its own blockchain based legal system and will ensure citizenship via digital contracts. Liberland plans to issue its own coin, called Merit, on April 13, which will mark the country’s third anniversary. All taxpayers will receive Merit, which will effectively grant them a stake in the country. The government budget is distributed in around a dozen cryptocurrencies.
