First of all, I want to say I'm a black man. I have identified as a libertarian since 2004, and have pretty much been a libertarian my entire adult life. When libertarians say they are for freedom, personal responsibility, and they distrust the government, I take this seriously. It's not just a talking point for me, it's a way of life for me. This is why I've been appalled at the attitudes I've seen coming out of libertarian circles in the last year or so. I'm a member of several libertarian groups on facebook, and I love to engage in discussions, debates, and colloboration of ideas through these forums. It's a great platform for this.
When Philandro Catile was murdered, on camera, you would have thought libertarians would be the first to talk about this. you would have thought that a group of people, who values individualism, freedom, and the rights of the individual not to be infringed upon would be all over this. But the day of the verdict, I saw silence about it. Not a single post from probably 6 forums I regularly visit. Not one. I did see, like clockwork SJW memes, the obligatory (should I check my white privilege post), and other such petty bullshit that has little to do with liberty.
I then decided to break the silence and made a post about Philandro Castile, and silence. No one in a LIBERTARIAN forum felt it was worth even talking about. There were no libertarian youtubers, podcasters, and bloggers (to my knowledge) who really gave a shit about this story. It was the same ol same ol contrarian bullshit. How the "left" are taking our rights away. But not once did any libertarian feel compelled to address this. And this is a major issue with our civil liberties.
And in closing, this is why libertarianism has become an absolute joke. Libertarians sit around and wonder why they can't seem to galvanize minorities to the cause. And right in front of libertarians faces are all the answers. Did you know there are even libertarians who feel that minority voters are unreachable? They think that minorities see libertarians as fascist and racist. Yet when police shootings occur, the libertarians have been completely silent, especially when it's a black man. And then you have bloggers like Stefan Molyneaux and Chris Cantwell misappropriating libertarianism in a comfortable statist/white nationalist cloth. And the only opponents of this are the left, libertarians have felt it's necessary to ignore people claiming to be libertarians who are racist and who are not teaching libertarian values at all. Libertarians really can't just admit that the people who call themselves libertarians are sheltered know-it-alls who really have no clue how engage people. I was appalled when nearly every libertarian talk show host and blog decided that this case wasn't worth talking about.
