The coffee that was this morning’s brew was a break from my usual grocery store find. A friend brought back a bag of coffee beans as a gift from their trip to Hawaii. The name is Lion Gold, International Coffee Blend – Light Roast from the Hawaii Coffee Company which has been around since 1864.
The picture below shows the signature red bag. This coffee blend was straight arabica coffee with no additional flavoring. Since it was beans, grinding was step one. I did a fine grind on the beans which means grind until there are no chunks. I have tried coarser grinds and have found I like a fine grind better. Once grinding was completed, it was ready for brewing as usual.
The result was a nice cup of coffee. Tasting is reminded me of a red wine in that it had a bolder full flavor at first and then dried out as it hit the back of my throat like a cabernet. I used a small amount of local honey for my sweetener and it added a hint of a mellow undertone. This coffee was definitely a special treat and I appreciated greatly the thoughtfulness of the gift.
