Ah, coffee. It is the undisputed Empress of beverages. Ok, maybe I am biased since I am totally addicted.
The dark side of coffee is, of course, the ups and downs and jitters. You have a coffee habit you love, but a few hours after your libation, you are not quite as perky. From an Ayurvedic standpoint, coffee is hot, sharp, light, bitter and pungent. This combo can wreak havoc on your system through the years. Dry skin, loose stools, addiction and withdrawal headaches.
Butter coffee, also known (Trademarked) as Bulletproof coffee, is the addition of grassfed butter, coconut oil or ghee (or a combo thereof), blended with coffee into a frothy latte. This combo takes the edge off the coffee energetics and mellows the jitters and fills your belly (for those of us who coffee but don't breakfast). I had started playing with adding other things to my coffee morning, including maca collagen, sunflower lecithin and Ashwaghanda. This combo, for me gives me the energetic boost, the full belly and the power, without the unwanted side effects. I had no idea this was "a thing" until I posted it to instagram and found out that #superfoodlatte was trending. The world is waking up (with a buzzzz) and smelling the....well, you know.
Superfood lattes are highly customizable and have the potential to help you get your superfood herbs into your body without a barrage of tinctures and pills... also without the smoothie which is too cold for me in winter.
Here is my fave Super-food Latte recipe! The result is a Paleo-friendly, delicious morning drink that satisfies your tummy and gives you energy. Drink, and go for your run. BOOYA!
1 standard French Press of your favorite coffee, beans freshly ground
Dash of alt milk, like hemp, soy or nutmilk
1/2 TSP Sunflower lecithin (this is good for connective tissues and breastfeeding mamas) - it also emulsifies the oil and coffee making it super creamy
1/2 tsp Maca powder
1 tsp Collagen powder
1 Tbsp ghee sub canna-ghee for the experienced ;-)
2 Medjool dates for the sweet
Put all in vitamix or good blender and whiz the heck out of it. Drink lusciously.
