Hello, Geek Zone community!

There has always been a choice in gaming, at the start the games were so simple that the only choice we had was moving or perhaps shooting some pixels in the arcades, eventually with Mario or best known at the moment as Jumpman we got another set of skills, jump, climb, dodge, and hammer. It wasn't the only one or the creator of said actions, but it was the one that marked an era with their attempt to tell a story through actions, eventually, that influence ended up creating several storytelling tools for modern games, as it mixed itself with the influence of Advent (later named Colossal Cave Adventure) and together created modern adventure games.
What does that have to do with The Walking Dead Game? Everything, this game is an example of how far can both of these genres mix, from the dialog choices on Advent that develop the story to the passive choices hidden in actions, this game is an embodiment of choice from head to toes, and in the act of storytelling, the developer discovered the lost art of choice in video games and how to apply it to create a masterpiece, let me tell you how they did it.

But how can you spot choice in the story of the walking dead? This should be the first question, you quite much **Can't**, but you can notice Agency. As walking dead the game lacks agency, this in itself is an agency of choice, we only can choose the story of the game, nothing else, we can either relate or not to the game, and this is limited to our connection to our emotions and humanity.
As this game plays with these elements constantly, is it ok to rob or kill someone for resources? Is it ok to teach Clementine to do so? Is Clementine our social compass? The questions should be obvious to the player along the play thought, but at the same time, there are no simple choices in this game, at all.
So to disguise its agency the developers (Telltale Games) created a character, and some arguments prove or disprove said theory I just proposed this [Thesis](https://ddd.uab.cat/pub/tfg/2017/181036/TFG_JosueMonchan_20170720.pdf) goes around the agency of the game to deeps that you should read if you like this subject, but to resume, this character is Clementine herself, she is the physical manifestation of the agency and morality of this game.
The sweet and tender Clementine is not only our compass, she is another playable character and the true agency of the game. She is the only character we see heavily evolve during the duration of the game, all the others are fixated on one single way of being, mostly being archetypes of some sort.

But Lee and Clementine evolve with ease along the game, mostly because they are the main characters and driving plot of the game, but constantly showing us how hard the world of The Walking Dead Game is, from horrible situations of hunger and pain to the edge of inhumanity with cannibalism and murder.
All these choices can be handled by the player and even if some of them are consequences of previous actions, some decisions make you think "my god..." and don't forget that most of them are made by the player to advance the history telling of the game, all of these are made by Choice and that is what makes the power of choice so important in this game.

Yes, these choices are limited, we are chained to the plot, forced upon it to be more precise, meaning that we aren't "free". But it is this freedom while still being inside the game that gives realism to this history, in the real life can't force the world to work for us, meaning that our reality is fixed upon us, we can't change our body with ease, can't change our economical or social position with ease, and I'm sure as hell we could try to choose not to... But we could not change a zombie apocalypse if this ever happens, so it is for any member of the group on The Walking Dead Game, it is a common plot device to see them talking about "before the dead" and "I wish the dead never happened", meaning that even in this tale, we get as much freedom as we can, Lee can't cure the zombie virus, so he doesn't even try, he just tried to survive and protect Clementine.

These choices get darker and darker as the plot deepens, at times we see how it evolved to a point that makes us wonder why would someone go that far with a game, but this is a TWD game, meaning that this universe is deeply inhuman, and with this eventually get us to one of the cruelest decisions a player could have, Clementine final scene, where she murders Lee, as he was infected and soon to turn.
These kinds of choices are amazing because they slowly build up to this point, they show us how cruel life in this universe can be and how survival grows increasingly harder by the day as food goes bad and canned food becomes harder to find, with constant looting and scavenging being the only way of survival, meaning that is either risking with the dead or stealing from the living, both of them are dark choices to have because is risking an 8-year-old life either way.
The issue with the looting is that one way or another is deeply wrong, being from the moral or ethical perspective, looting someone else is always wrong for Clementine and Lee, becoming a thief is something that is a slippery slow for most players, and is this kind of choice that evolves into a dark plot.

The group is an essential part of this story that the game tells, it has magic, you know, that chemistry that can only be described with "they will end up killing each other one of these days", and In one way or another they are banded together for their survival as a whole. That is something that amazes me, as they managed to do so many subplots into a single game, small bits and pieces of conflicts that arrive as soon as a choice has been made, an incredible work of art.

This plot has its turns and spins, but at its core is a tale of love and survival, it never becomes about being someone's benefactor like a Robin Hood character or a big thief that dooms a family... In theory, but in practice, some of your decisions do have huge consequences that are unforeseen at the time you take them.
Those choices are what make this game so powerful and emotional, every single one of the most meaningless ones could become a sign of someone's impending doom and even a death of a loved one, which is just how the world is when the dead are rising, sometimes one forgets to lock a door and finds it's entire family as undead, is just how the world of TWD works, sadly **there are no easy choices in this game**.

With time beyond the narrative and choices, this game has wonderful cinematography, the framing, the shots, every part of its cinematography was properly polished like a diamond, a jewel full of brilliance and light, and that in itself should be an incredible achievement, but it is not, the cinematography is obscured in this game, it is easily forgettable, that was the work of the emotional connection of the characters, the one that made with the player and his decisions, and these introduce you so deep into the game that you miss seeing those beautiful art frames that you are given sometimes.
At the end of the day I would recommend this game for those three main strong points it has, cinematography, incredible storytelling, and the art of good choices and consequences (unlike Mass Effect 3, yes I'm looking at you Bioware) these elements make the game a solid bet, one that will get your dose of Zombies if you ever decide to deep into this tale of death and love.

Remember that if you crave a story full of Zombies and Humanity this is the one to go, is full of powerful choices and a unique setting that will keep you on the chair or sofa for hours, so are you willing to play it? Siempre ha habido una opción en los juegos, al principio los juegos eran tan simples que la única opción que teníamos era movernos o tal vez disparar algunos píxeles en los arcades, eventualmente con Mario o mejor conocido en este momento como Jumpman obtuvimos otra serie de habilidades, saltar, escalar, esquivar y martillar. No fue el único ni mucho menos el creador de dichas acciones, pero sí fue el que marcó una época con su intento de contar una historia a través de acciones, con el tiempo, esa influencia terminó creando varias herramientas narrativas para los juegos modernos, ya que se mezcló con la influencia de Advent (que luego se llamó Colossal Cave Adventure) y juntos crearon los juegos de aventura modernos.
¿Qué tiene esto que ver con el juego de The Walking Dead? Todo, este juego es un ejemplo vivo de hasta qué punto pueden mezclarse ambos géneros, desde las opciones de diálogo de Advent que desarrollan la historia hasta las elecciones pasivas ocultas en las acciones, este juego es una encarnación de la elección de pies a cabeza, y en el acto de contar historias, el equipo desarrollador descubrió el arte perdido de la elección en los videojuegos y cómo aplicarlo para crear una obra maestra, déjame contarte cómo lo hicieron.

¿Cómo se puede detectar la elección en esta historia de muertos vivientes? Esta debería ser la primera pregunta, simplemente **no se puede**, pero si se puede notar la agencia. Como Walking Dead, el juego carece de agencia, esto en sí es una agencia de elección, solo podemos elegir la historia del juego, nada más, podemos relacionarnos o no con el juego, y esto se limita a nuestra conexión con nuestras emociones y humanidad.
Como este juego juega con estos elementos constantemente ¿Está bien robar o matar a alguien para obtener recursos? ¿Está bien enseñar a Clementine a hacerlo? ¿Es Clementine nuestra brújula social? Las preguntas deberían ser obvias para el jugador a lo largo del pensamiento durante el juego, pero al mismo tiempo, no hay opciones simples en este juego, en absoluto.
Así que para disfrazar su agencia los desarrolladores (Telltale Games) crearon un personaje, y algunos argumentos prueban o refutan dicha teoría que acabo de proponer, esta [Tesis](https://revistas.innovacionumh.es/index.php/mhcj/article/view/341/1253) va alrededor de la agencia del juego en base a la tragedia y en sus profundidades que se deben leer si le gusta este tema, pero para resumir, este personaje es Clementine en si misma, ella es la manifestación física de la agencia y la moral de este juego.
La dulce y tierna Clementine no solo es nuestra brújula, es otro personaje jugable y la verdadera agencia del juego. Es el único personaje al que vemos evolucionar fuertemente durante la duración del juego, todos los demás se fijan en una única forma de ser, siendo en su mayoría arquetipos de algún tipo.

Pero Lee y Clementine evolucionan con facilidad a lo largo del juego, sobre todo porque son los personajes principales y el motor argumental del juego, pero nos muestran constantemente lo duro que es el mundo del juego de The Walking Dead, desde situaciones horribles de hambre y dolor hasta el límite de lo inhumano con el canibalismo y el asesinato.
Todas estas elecciones pueden ser manejadas por el jugador y aunque algunas de ellas son consecuencias de acciones anteriores, algunas decisiones te hacen pensar "Dios mío..." y no olvides que la mayoría de ellas son tomadas por el jugador para avanzar en la narración de la historia del juego, todas ellas son tomadas por elección y eso es lo que hace que el poder de elección sea tan importante en este juego.

Sí, estas elecciones son limitadas, estamos encadenados a la trama, forzados a ella para ser más precisos y eso significa que no somos "libres". Pero es esta libertad sin dejar de estar dentro del juego lo que le da realismo a esta historia, en la vida real no podemos forzar al mundo a trabajar para nosotros, lo que significa que nuestra realidad está fijada sobre nosotros, no podemos cambiar nuestro cuerpo con facilidad, no podemos cambiar nuestra posición económica o social con facilidad, y seguro que podríamos intentar elegir no hacerlo... Pero no podríamos cambiar un apocalipsis zombi si esto llegara a suceder, así es para cualquier miembro del grupo en The Walking Dead Game, es un recurso argumental común verlos hablar de "antes de los muertos" y "desearía que los muertos nunca hubieran sucedido", lo que significa que incluso en este cuento, tenemos toda la libertad posible, Lee no puede curar el virus zombi, así que ni siquiera lo intenta, sólo trató de sobrevivir y proteger a Clementine.

Estas elecciones se vuelven más y más oscuras a medida que la trama se profundiza, a veces vemos cómo evoluciona hasta un punto que nos hace preguntarnos por qué alguien iría tan lejos con un juego, pero este es un juego de TWD, lo que significa que este universo es profundamente inhumano, y con esto eventualmente nos lleva a una de las decisiones más crueles que un jugador podría tener, la escena final de Clementine, donde ella asesina a Lee, ya que estaba infectado y pronto se convertiría.
Este tipo de decisiones son asombrosas porque poco a poco llegan a este punto, nos muestran lo cruel que puede ser la vida en este universo y cómo la supervivencia se hace cada vez más difícil a medida que la comida se echa a perder y la comida enlatada se hace más difícil de encontrar, siendo el saqueo constante y el robo de comida la única manera de sobrevivir, lo que significa que es arriesgarse con los muertos o robar a los vivos, ambas son decisiones oscuras porque es arriesgar la vida de una niña de 8 años de cualquier manera.
La cuestión con el saqueo es que de una forma u otra está profundamente mal, siendo desde el punto de vista moral o ético, saquear a otra persona siempre está mal para Clementine y Lee, convertirse en un ladrón es algo que es una pendiente resbaladiza para la mayoría de los jugadores, es ese tipo de elección que evoluciona hacia una trama mas oscura.

El grupo es una parte esencial de esta historia que cuenta el juego, tiene su magia, ya sabes, esa química que sólo se puede describir con "acabarán matándose los unos a los otros uno de estos días", y de una forma u otra se unen para su supervivencia en conjunto. Esto es algo que me sorprende, ya que han conseguido hacer tantas subtramas en un solo juego, pequeños trozos de conflictos que llegan en cuanto se hace una elección, una obra de arte increíble.

La trama tiene sus giros y vueltas, pero en el fondo es una historia de amor y supervivencia, nunca se trata de ser el benefactor de alguien como un personaje como Robin Hood o un gran ladrón que condena a una familia... En teoría, pero en la práctica, algunas de tus decisiones tienen enormes consecuencias imprevistas en el momento en que las tomas.
Esas decisiones son las que hacen que este juego sea tan poderoso y emotivo, cada una de las más insignificantes puede convertirse en una señal de inminente perdición de alguien e incluso de la muerte de un ser querido, que es justo como es el mundo cuando los muertos se levantan, a veces uno se olvida de cerrar una puerta y se encuentra a toda su familia como no-muertos, es justo como funciona el mundo de TWD, tristemente **no hay elecciones fáciles en este juego**.

Con el tiempo, más allá de la narración y las elecciones, este juego tiene una maravillosa cinematografía, los encuadre, las tomas, cada parte de su cinematografía fue debidamente pulida como un diamante, una joya llena de brillo y luz, y que en sí mismo debería ser un logro increíble, pero no lo es, la cinematografía se oscurece en este juego, es fácilmente olvidable, ese fue el trabajo de la conexión emocional de los personajes, aquella que hizo con el jugador y sus decisiones, y estas te introducen tan profundo en el juego que se pierde el ver esos hermosos marcos de arte que se te da aveces.
Al final del día recomendaría este juego por esos tres principales puntos fuertes que tiene, la cinematografía, la increíble narrativa y el arte de las buenas decisiones y consecuencias (a diferencia de Mass Effect 3, sí, te estoy mirando a ti Bioware) estos elementos hacen que el juego sea una apuesta sólida, una que tendrá su dosis de Zombies si alguna vez decides profundizar en esta historia de muerte y amor.
