Plot

The film begins by showing us a sophisticated process of creating enormous chocolate bars, four of which contain golden tickets. The chocolates are packaged and distributed around the world that morning, leaving in red trucks from a huge factory in the middle of a snow-covered city. Across the street is the modest house where our protagonist lives with his parents and grandparents. When his father returns from work, little Charlie Bucket's family gets ready for dinner while one of his grandparents, who is in bed, tells him everything he knows about Willy Wonka and his great ingenuity in creating sweets.

I'll be honest with you: despite having seen this film and many other Tim Burton films countless times since I was a child, I didn't feel the same urge to talk about it now as I did with Sleepy Hollow, for example. That's not to say that I have no desire or appreciation for this film as such, as I consider Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to have had a very significant impact on my life. It's just that, when I remember it, I think more about the memes, references, and jokes than the story itself. Yes, it has a fantastic story full of valuable lessons that we'll talk about later. But I only mention this small detail so that you understand why I think this Tim Burton film is one of the best he's made overall, even though it's not one of my favorites as such. Again, don't get me wrong, I think its mix of fantasy, comedy, and mystery is very special. Especially because of how it shows us the world inside Willy Wonka's gigantic Chocolate Factory. To think that all this came from the imagination of a single man who loved sweets is mind-boggling. But the most surreal thing is everything this movie conveys to us.

Les seré sincero y es que, a pesar de haber visto tantas veces ésta película como muchas otras de Tim Burton desde que era un niño, no tuve el mismo deseo de hablar de ella ahora como lo tuve con Sleepy Hollow, por ejemplo. Con esto no digo que no tenga ningún deseo o aprecio a esta película como tal ya que considero que Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tiene un impacto muy significativo en mi vida. Solo que, al recordarla, pienso más en los memes, las referencias y los chistes que tiene que en su historia como tal. Que sí, tiene una historia fantástica y repleta de lecciones muy valiosas que iremos hablando más adelante. Pero solo menciono este pequeño detalle nomás para que entiendan por qué pienso que esta película de Tim Burton es de las mejores que ha hecho de forma general, aunque no sea de mis favoritas como tal. Repito, no me malentiendan, considero que su mezcla de fantasía con comedia y misterio es de lo más especial. Sobre todo por cómo nos muestran este mundo que hay dentro de la gigantesca Fábrica de Chocolates de Willy Wonka. Pensar que todo esto salió de la imaginación de un solo hombre y amante de los dulces es alucinante. Pero lo más surrealista es todo lo que esta película nos transmite.

I can tell you right now that this movie has a story that not only entertains you, but also makes you think a lot about different things. It wasn't hard at all for me to grow fond of the main character, little Charlie, because of his family's financial situation. I don't know, maybe it's because I've been living in a somewhat similar situation for more than a decade with my family due to the crisis in my country and all that. But unlike me, Charlie's case is much more precarious and striking, which makes his passive and positive attitude towards his life stand out.

El mensaje es claro cuando, al principio de la película, nos presentan al protagonista, el pequeño Charlie Bucket quien no es más que un niño, hijo de una familia de muy escasos recursos de esta gran ciudad. Su sueño, al igual que el de su abuelo Joe, es el de visitar la enorme Fábrica de Chocolates de Willy Wonka. Esto sería un tanto difícil de hacerse realidad ya que Willy cerró su fábrica hace muchos años, dejando a mucha gente sin empleos y nadie lo ha visto desde entonces. Pero un día, este sueño se hará realidad cuando, de forma anónima, se anuncia por todo el mundo que Willy abrirá una vez más su fábrica para los cinco chicos que consigan sus boletos dorados. Desde ya les digo que esta película tiene una historia que, no solo te entretiene, sino que también te pone a reflexionar bastante sobre distintas cosas. No se me hizo para nada difícil llegar a encariñarme con el protagonista, el pequeño Charlie, debido a la situación económica de su familia. No sé, tal vez y sea porque yo he estado viviendo una situación un tanto similar desde hace más de una década con mi familia debido a la crisis que hay en mi país y todo eso. Pero a diferencia de mí, el caso de Charlie es mucho más precaria y llamativa, lo cual hace que su actitud pasiva y positiva con respecto a su vida destaque.

But one thing you do learn when you find yourself in that situation is to value both things and people as they are. Of course, Charlie's case may also have something to do with his upbringing and education. Especially when we later meet the other children who got four of Willy Wonka's five golden tickets. This is mainly due to his financial situation, but more because of his strong desire to visit the chocolate factory and his mentality of not giving up, even when all seems lost in the end.

Pero algo que sí aprende uno cuando vive dicha situación es el saber valorar tanto las cosas como a la gente como tal. Claro, el caso de Charlie puede que también tenga algo que ver con su crianza y educación. Sobre todo cuando más adelante llegamos a conocer a los demás niños que consiguieron cuatro de los cinco boletos dorados de Willy Wonka. Cada niño es una representación visual e infantil de las diferentes crianzas que se han popularizado desde hace tiempo. Niños groseros, egoístas, rebeldes, exigentes y engreídos. En comparación, Charlie es todo un ángel al lado de ellos. Pero lo que más me impactó del principio de esta película, luego de varios años sin haberla visto, fue cómo consiguió Charlie el último boleto dorado de Willy Wonka. Puede que suene a cliché y todo, pero aquí creo que aplica perfectamente el dicho de “la tercera es la vencida”. Solo que aquí vemos los intentos fallidos de Charlie por conseguir el boleto dorado como un esfuerzo monumental, en comparación con lo que han hecho los demás niños. Esto se debe principalmente a su situación económica, pero más por ese fuerte deseo que tiene de visitar la fábrica de chocolate y su mentalidad de no rendirse, aún cuando todo se ve perdido al final.

In my case, my dream or desire may sound a little more materialistic than little Charlie Bucket's dream of visiting Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. But yes, my dream is to be able to "make a living doing what I love", which is writing or talking about movies and anime. This is still a long way from becoming a reality, and although Hive is like that "golden ticket" that gave me the opportunity to fulfill that dream, I still have a long way to go. Continuing with this example/comparison, those who have already seen this movie will know what that "incredible prize" is that the lucky boy won from Willy. So you can think of that prize as the fulfillment of our dreams.

Esto me inspiró mucho a sacar una especie de comparación o referencia de lo que muchos afrontamos en la vida real. No es un secreto que muy pocos son los que consiguen hacer realidad sus sueños. Dependiendo de la situación de cada quien, hay quienes tienen más oportunidades que otros de lograr algo en sus vidas o hacer lo que les dé la gana sin ninguna consecuencia. Aparte de la gran injusticia que hay en esta sociedad, también está el problema de la crianza que los niños de ahora reciben, pero ya ese es un tema aparte. A lo que quiero llegar con todo esto es al hecho de que, por muy difícil que sea nuestra situación, no debemos de perder la esperanza de lograr cumplir con nuestros sueños. En mi caso puede que mi sueño o deseo suene un tanto más materialista que el sueño de nuestro pequeño Charlie Bucket por visitar la Fábrica de Chocolates de Willy Wonka. Pero si, mi sueño es poder “vivir de lo que me gusta” que es escribir o hablar de películas y animes. Esto aún está demasiado lejos de hacerse realidad y, si bien Hive es para mí como ese “boleto dorado” que me dió esa oportunidad de cumplir con dicho sueño, aún tengo mucho por recorrer todavía. Siguiendo con este ejemplo/comparativa, los que ya han visto esta película sabrán cuál es ese “increíble premio” que ganó el afortunado niño por parte de Willy. Así que pueden comprar dicho premio como la resolución de nuestros sueños.

A lo largo del fantástico tour que Willy Wonka les da a los cinco niños por su fábrica de chocolates podemos ver cómo nuestro anfitrión pone a prueba a cada uno. Repito, los que vieron la película ya sabrán cómo terminaron porque no lo voy a decir aquí. Así que se pueden imaginar cuáles son las lecciones que podemos aprender del caso de cada niño. Pero a lo que voy con esto es que, de entre tantas pruebas, tentaciones y desafíos que tuvo a lo largo del tour; Charlie nunca se dejó llevar por nada y siempre se mantuvo firme a sus principios. En nuestro caso, si queremos aprovechar dicha oportunidad que nos dió la vida de conseguir realizar nuestros sueños, tenemos que hacer lo mismo. Dichas pruebas o desafíos pueden describirse de diferentes formas. He has that spontaneous and childish personality, but with a somewhat mysterious wit and aura. Throughout the tour he gives the children, we wonder if everything that happens to each child is pure coincidence or if it was actually planned from the beginning. Clearly, Willy himself does not confirm this, but it is evident if you pay close attention to every detail and expression he makes throughout the tour of his chocolate factory.

Pero a pesar de eso, la lección que nos transmite la película con todo esto es que no debemos dejarnos llevar por dichos pensamientos egoístas. Tampoco debemos dejarnos tentar por cosas materiales como el dinero, por ejemplo. Por otro lado, podemos notar una clara referencia que nos deja esta adaptación con las generaciones actuales, sus crianzas y los efectos negativos que hay del uso excesivo de las tecnologías a tan corta edad. Todos estos temas educativos, morales y sociales que toca esta película es solo una parte del mensaje final que nos transmite su historia. Con esto último me refiero más a esa forma de ver o considerar a nuestros padres o familiares. Por otro lado, un detalle muy notable de esta película es su versión de Willy Wonka, siendo este interpretado por Johnny Depp. A diferencia de las otras adaptaciones, este Willy es muy peculiar, demasiado diría yo. Tiene esa personalidad espontánea e infantil, pero con un ingenio y un aura un tanto misteriosa. A lo largo del tour que les da a los niños pensamos si todo lo que le ocurre a cada niño es pura casualidad o es que en realidad estaba todo planeado desde un principio. Claramente, esto no nos lo confirma el propio Willy, pero es evidente con solo fijarse bien en cada detalle y expresión que este hace a lo largo del viaje por su fábrica de chocolates.

Otra cosa que notamos de este personaje es su manera de ver y tratar a los padres de estos niños que recibe en su fábrica. Aquí volvemos a lo que les mencioné antes sobre los padres y cómo debemos de verlos. Para Willy son un estorbo, aunque esto al final nos lo aclaran gracias a sus flashbacks de que es debido a un pequeño trauma que tiene por las diferencias que tuvo con su padre cuando era niño. En comparación, nuestro pequeño Charlie demuestra un amor incondicional con sus padres, algo que evidentemente choca con la visión que tiene Willy Wonka. En cuanto al final, por muy predecible que fuera, no voy a negar que estuvo bien. Puede que no tengamos la suerte de Charlie Bucket en nuestras vidas, tampoco creo que sea posible recibir algún premio tan fantástico como el que vemos al final. We must also mention the excellent use of practical visual effects, with such excellent results that, even today, they seem to be largely CGI. The locations, other resources, and different characters were created and added in the most realistic way possible. Even so, you can still see certain computer-generated backgrounds. The cast of actors is not bad either, especially the one who plays the Oompa-Loompas. The sound effects are also noteworthy, but nothing compares to the soundtrack. This time, Danny Elfman shines with spectacular work, including varied songs with funny lyrics throughout the film. In short, here is a Tim Burton film that I recommend you watch.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Tim Burton se luce, una vez más, con un trabajo de dirección impresionante para esta segunda adaptación de la novela homónima. Su visión de este mundo fantástico y repleto de chocolates es, como notamos, muy oscura y a la vez colorida. El trabajo artístico es fantástico, al igual que sucede con el estilo de fotografía, planos fijos, transiciones y vistas aéreas. Los tonos oscuros y las paletas de colores fríos y variados es también digno de destacarse. Tanto el maquillaje como la vestimenta y los distintos estilos que vemos a lo largo de esta película son igual de llamativos. También hay que mencionar el excelente uso de efectos visuales prácticos, con un resultado tan excelente que, aún al día de hoy, pareciera ser hecho por CGI en gran parte. Tanto los lugares como los demás recursos y los distintos personajes fueron hechos y agregados de la manera más realista posible. Aún así se puede ver ciertos fondos hechos por computadora. El elenco de actores tampoco lo hace tan mal, sobre todo el que interpreta a los Oompa-Loompas. Los efectos de sonido también son dignos de destacarse, pero nada como su banda sonora. Y es que esta vez Danny Elfman se luce con un trabajo espectacular incluyendo canciones variadas y con letras chistosas a lo largo de la cinta. En fin, aquí les dejo una película de Tim Burton que les recomiendo ver.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 in terms of the fantasy, science fiction, drama, and comedy genres.
