Hello, anime fans. We’re back to talk about some of the hidden gems from last fall’s season. This time, I’ve got a South Korean animated series for you that—surprisingly, for me—I actually ended up really liking. A dramatic and fantastical story that managed to stand out from the majority of generic fantasy anime out there. Based on the web novel series of the same name written by Plutus and illustrated by Spoon, Who Made Me a Princess was produced by the Chinese studio Colored Pencil Animation. En esta ocasión les tengo una serie animada surcoreana que -sorprendentemente para mí- me llegó a gustar bastante. Una historia dramática y fantástica que logró destacarse por sobre la mayoría de animes de fantasía genéricos que hay. Plot

The animated series opens with a blonde woman who appears to be of royal blood giving birth to a baby girl. As soon as the baby is born and she holds her in her arms, she names her Athanasia and then passes away. The woman was none other than Empress Consort Diana, wife of Emperor Claude Obelia. Due to the death of his beloved wife, Emperor Claude rejects his newborn daughter, Athanasia, and confines her to a separate palace where she lives only with a group of maids. He also decides to burn everything related to his wife, such as paintings, dresses, photographs, and so on.

La serie animada empieza mostrándonos a una mujer rubia que parece ser de la realeza dando a luz a una pequeña bebé. Al nacer y tenerla en su regazo, le da el nombre de Athanasia y posteriormente fallece. La mujer era nada más ni nada menos que la Emperatriz Consorte Diana, esposa del Emperador Claude Obelia. Debido a la muerte de su querida esposa, el Emperador Claude rechaza a su hija recién nacida, Athanasia, y la confina en un palacio aparte donde solo vive con un grupo de sirvientas. También decide quemar todo lo relacionado a su esposa como lo son cuadros, vestidos, fotografías y demás.

Honestly, I don't know how I've managed to watch so many anime series in a single season. And the craziest part isn't the quantity, but the variety of anime I've ended up watching. I've even watched the famous "donghuas", which are like anime but made in China. That’s the case with the animated series I’m bringing you today—a Chinese animation that’s actually based on a South Korean web manga and also has a Japanese dub. That’s why I mentioned at the beginning that this series has brought together three Asian countries, a remarkable feat that, apparently, isn’t the first time this has happened. It’s also not the first time I’ve watched a donghua, since there was another much more popular fantasy-comedy one I watched back then that entertained me quite a bit. But when it comes to Who Made Me a Princess, things are different because, while it also has fantasy elements, it has a story that’s much more dramatic and romantic than it is comedic and absurd. In fact, it was precisely because of the story it tells at the beginning that it caught my attention (and I actually thought twice about watching it, since it’s not the kind of story I usually watch). This series tells the story of Athanasia, the daughter of Emperor Claude Obelia.

Honestamente no sé cómo he logrado ver tantos animes en una sola temporada. Y lo más loco de esto no es la cantidad, sino la variedad de animes que he llegado a ver. Incluso he visto los famosos “donghuas” que son como los animes, pero hechos en China. Ese es el caso de la serie animada que les traigo el día de hoy, una animación china, pero que a su vez está basada en un manga web surcoreano y que tiene también un doblaje al japonés. Es por esto que les mencioné al principio que esta serie ha unido a tres países asiáticos, una completa hazaña que, por lo visto, no es la primera vez que sucede. Tampoco es la primera vez que veo un donghua, ya que hubo otro mucho más popular de fantasía y comedia que vi en su momento y que me entretuvo bastante. Pero en cuanto a Who Made Me a Princess es diferente la cosa ya que, si bien posee fantasía también, tiene una historia mucho más dramática y romántica que cómica y absurda. Es más, es debido a dicha historia que nos cuenta al principio que me llamó la atención (y eso que lo pensé dos veces para verlo ya que no es el tipo de historias que acostumbro a ver). Esta serie nos cuenta la historia de Athanasia, la hija del Emperador Claude Obelia.

Just a few days after her birth, she gains adult-level intelligence and later has a vision of her future in which she is imprisoned for allegedly attempting to assassinate her father, Emperor Claude, and ultimately commits suicide. All of this happens while she is gnawing on a book she sees in a void, completely chained up. Now, armed with the knowledge and the vision she had of her future, she will have to find a way to avoid that tragic fate. Obviously, you’ve already figured out why I decided to watch this series all the way through: the premise presented at the beginning struck me as incredibly intriguing. While there are many other anime with similar plots—where protagonists travel back in time to rewrite their history and the like—this time there was something that hooked me and was hard to let go of until the very end. Maybe it’s that mix of drama and fantasy that I love so much, which definitely delivers a story with shocking and quite thrilling moments. Everything I hoped to see in this anime series was fulfilled, to a certain extent. For example, everything related to Emperor Claude and Athanasia unfolds in a way that, honestly, I didn’t expect.

A los pocos días de haber nacido apenas obtiene inteligencia adulta y posteriormente tiene una visión de su futuro donde es encarcelada por supuestamente intentar asesinar a su padre, el Emperador Claude y finalmente se suicida. Todo esto sucede mientras muerde un libro que ve en un vacío que se encuentra completamente encadenado. Ahora, con el conocimiento y la visión que tuvo de su futuro, tendrá que buscar la manera de evitar ese trágico destino. Evidentemente, ya se dieron cuenta de la razón del por qué decidí verme esta serie hasta el final y es que dicha premisa que nos plantea al principio me pareció de lo más interesante. Si bien hay muchos otros animes con tramas similares de protagonistas que regresan al pasado a reconstruir su historia y cosas por el estilo, esta vez hubo algo que me enganchó y que fue difícil de soltar hasta el final. Tal vez sea esa mezcla de drama con fantasía que tanto me encanta ver y que definitivamente ofrecen una historia con momentos impactantes y bastante emocionantes. Todo lo que esperaba ver en esta serie animada la llegó a cumplir, hasta cierto punto. Por ejemplo, todo lo relacionado con el Emperador Claude y Athanasia lo vemos desarrollarse de una forma que, sinceramente, no me lo esperaba.

Although it’s true that the ending was, in part, what we expected. But despite that, it managed to wrap up this season in a pretty exciting way. And that’s another thing I love about this series: it develops its main characters in a way that makes you grow attached to them, even if they seem like the worst people imaginable. That was certainly the case with Emperor Claude himself, who—as you read above—seems cold and ruthless at the start of the series, but then, as the episodes unfold, we see him change in a surprising way. Beyond being the typical story of the protagonist who travels back in time to change her tragic fate, this series has a much more tragic and melancholic underlying story of loss, pain, hatred, and overcoming adversity. The story of Claude and Diana is deeply moving, especially given everything we learn about them throughout the series. It is this aspect that gives the story its romantic touch, though in the end it becomes something far more tragic and dramatic. Despite this, the series doesn’t neglect its sense of humor—a humor that never feels heavy-handed, though it is somewhat innocent.

Aunque, sí es cierto que la parte final tuvo un desenlace que, en parte, se esperaba ver. Pero a pesar de eso, logró cerrar esta temporada de una forma bastante emocionante. Y es otra cosa cosa que me gusta de esta serie, que consigue desarrollar a sus personajes principales de una forma que consigues encariñarte con ellos, aún si aparentan ser lo peor que hay. Así fue con el caso del mismo Emperador Claude quien, con lo que leyeron arriba, notaron que tiene una personalidad fría y despiadada al principio de la serie, pero luego con el paso de los episodios vemos cómo cambia de una forma sorprendente. Más allá de ser la típica historia de la protagonista que regresa al pasado para así cambiar su trágica historia, esta serie posee de trasfondo una historia mucho más trágica y melancólica de pérdida, dolor, odio y superación. Lo de Claude y Diana es algo que genera mucha emoción y más con todo lo que llegamos a conocer a lo largo de la serie sobre ellos. Es por este lado que dicha historia posee su toque romántico, aunque al final termina siendo algo mucho más tráfico y dramático. A pesar de esto, la serie no deja de lado su toque de humor, un humor que no llega a ser del todo pesado, aunque sí un tanto inocente.

I don’t entirely dislike the protagonist’s personality and development, especially compared to most generic protagonists in this type of story. She has her moments where she shines and really stands out, though she also has her cringeworthy moments—which, rather than being disappointing, I actually find funny, to be honest. We also meet Lucas, a powerful sorcerer who teaches Athanasia magic and is always by her side because he’s interested in how she “changes the fate” of things and the people around her. Among all the characters we get to know in this series, I think the one who stands out the most—aside from the protagonist—is the young Ijikiel, who, while he has a very innocent relationship with Athanasia in the end, had an introduction at the beginning that was one of the most awkward and humiliating I’ve ever seen. We also see that there’s a sort of villain in this story who doesn’t have much presence or development, as one would normally expect. But he does manage to cause some chaos and rather striking problems. Yes, he has his action scenes, though they’re quite scarce, to be honest.

La personalidad y desarrollo que tiene la protagonista como tal no me desagrada del todo, en comparación con la mayoría de protagonistas genéricas de este tipo de historias. Tiene sus momentos en los que se luce y logra destacarse bastante bien, aunque también tiene sus momentos bochornosos que, más que decepcionar considero que son graciosos, la verdad. También conocemos a Lucas, un poderoso hechicero que le enseña magia a Athanasia y que está siempre con ella debido a que está interesado en cómo “cambia el destino” de las cosas y de la gente a su alrededor. Entre todos los personajes que llegamos a conocer en esta serie, considero que de los que más destacan es -aparte de la protagonista- el joven Ijikiel quien, si bien tiene una relación muy inocente con Athanasia al final, al principio la introducción que le dan fue de lo más incómodo y humillante que he visto. También vemos que hay una especie de villano en esta historia que no tiene mucha presencia ni desarrollo como uno espera ver normalmente. Pero sí llega a causar ciertos estragos y problemas un tanto llamativos. Si, tiene sus escenas de acción, aunque bastante escasas, la verdad.

Last but not least, another thing I really liked about this donghua is its audiovisual presentation. Usually, this type of animated series doesn’t have the same level of quality as a popular anime, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s eye-catching. In this case, Who Made Me a Princess boasts excellent visual quality, particularly in its use of traditional (2D) animation. The character designs, art style, visual details, and warm, vibrant color palette are among its most striking features. The same goes for its fluidity. Another thing worth noting is the design of the backgrounds or environments we see throughout the series. Some appear to be created using traditional animation, while in other instances, the clear use of computer-generated animation is evident. While it doesn’t stand out enough to overshadow the rest, this mix of visual elements doesn’t seem to blend very well on a couple of occasions. Still, for a relatively obscure fantasy anime series, it’s actually not that badly made. The sound effects aren’t bad either, and the soundtrack often stands out quite well. Anyway, here’s a donghua for anyone interested in watching it. Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in the fantasy and drama genres.

Finalmente, pero no menos importante, otra cosa que me gustó mucho de este donghua es su apartado audiovisual. Normalmente este tipo de series animadas no tiene el mismo nivel de calidad que tiene un anime popular, pero eso no resta al hecho de que llama la atención. En esta ocasión, Who Made Me a Princess tiene una muy buena calidad visual, sobre todo en lo que respecta al uso de la animación tradicional (2D). Los diseños de los personajes, el estilo de dibujo, los detalles visuales y la paleta de colores cálidos y brillantes son de lo más llamativo que posee. También sucede lo mismo con su fluidez. Otra cosa a destacar es el diseño de los fondos o entornos que vemos a lo largo de la serie. Algunos parecen estar hechos por animación tradicional mientras que en otras ocasiones se ve el claro uso de la animación hecha por computadora. Si bien no llega a destacarse tanto como para opacar lo demás, dicha mezcla de elementos visuales parecen no mezclarse muy bien en un par de ocasiones. Aún así, para ser una serie animada de fantasía poco popular, no está tan mal hecho, la verdad. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, al igual que sucede con la banda sonora que logra destacarse bastante bien en muchas ocasiones. En fin, aquí les dejo un donghua para el que le interese verla. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía y drama.
