Cut content is an issue almost every gamer has with Video Games. There are multiple reasons for cut content, such as time constraints, issues with said content, or dwindling resources. There’s a saying in the video game industry, and that’s “You can’t be afraid to kill your babies,” and sometimes it’s the truth. No matter how many hours you pour into something, sometimes you just can’t get it to work. But what happens when you can get it to work, and content is “cut” purely for greed and repurposed as DLC? Cut-Content will be a new series of articles where I explore the Cut Content of video games. And this first article will talk about True endings for video games that were actually in DLC.

The very first game that comes to mind is Asura’s Wrath. I have never played the game, but heard all about how the true ending is locked behind DLC. That in fact the DLC was once meant to be a part of the original game but was “cut” and repackaged as DLC, so that the game could earn more money.

Asura’s Wrath’s DLC is known as Part IV: Nirvana, and contains the game’s true ending. The DLC adds an extra 3 episodes for the price of $6.99. Now don’t get me wrong, from what I read, this isn’t a “just cut the ending out and sell it” type deal. Part 4 had got a lot of praise, and a lot of people claim it’s the best part of the game. And maybe the developers saw this and was the reason they repackaged it as DLC, or maybe it was on the behest of Capcom?

Next up on GamerGeek’s ShitList, is a game series that I’ve been a fan of since the first one came out, and that’s Assassin’s Creed, more specifically Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. Now, I see that Hive Gaming is full of AC fans, so you may scratch your head at this entry, and I couldn’t blame you, because I would consider this a “cheat” one.

At the end of Brotherhood we see Desmond forced to stab Lucy with his hidden blade, leaving her dead and bleeding, and Desmond in a vegetable like state. In Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Desmond is trying to stop his brain from being scrambled and has to work his way through the rest of Ezio’s memories, with the help of the conciousness of Subject 16 ( Clay Kaczmarek).

There is a DLC for AC: Revelations, that doesn’t really follow the AC formula. The DLC is a first person, platforming type “game”. In it we play as Clay going through his memories. And in this DLC the question is answered to why Desmond killed Lucy, or more correctly why he was forced by Juno to do so. It turns out Lucy was a double agent. She was using Desmond to find out where the apple was, then was going to bring Desmond and the POE back to Vidict. Her reasons for this was that Vidict and the Templars somehow saved her life and she felt like she owed them.

The reveal behind this was really crappy. The DLC sucked and it would have been a lot better if we had seen this in the actual game. It’s clear the Lucy has feelings for Desmond and vice versa, so seeing her battle with whom she wants to be aligned with would have made for some awesome drama. Even a simple line at the ending of AC Brotherhood, where Juno tells Desmond that Lucy is a Templar, would have been more fitting than this dlc.

Next up is Mass Effect 2. Although, like the above, I would describe this as a semi cheat one. When I think of the real ending for ME2, I think of The Arrival DLC. When I first played the ME series in 2013, it was without any DLC’s. So when I played ME3, I was a bit confused at the start of it and wondered why Sheperd was in Custody. Well, I got my question answered on my second play through when I played The Arrival.

This Scientist was on a space station on an Asteroid that ended up finding a Prothean Relic, and as a result they all ended up indoctrinate. Through a series of events, Sheperd learns The Reapers were mere hours from using the Batarian Mass Relay to enter the system from Dark Space. Even though you are given a choice whether to warn the Batarian system to evacute, their fate is sealed. The only way to stop The Reaper Invasion was to crash the asteroid into the Mass Relay, which pretty much dusted that system, which is why Sheperd is in custody at the start of ME3.

ME2 isn’t the first time EA/Bioware has done something like this. And they repeated this with Dragon Age: Inquisition. The ending of DA:I was ambiguous. People dissected every part of it and the consensus was that EggHead, I mean Solas, was Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf. The Dread Wolf was an Elven God that was the reason the Elves lost their immortality and was cast out from paradise.

In the Trespasser DLC, we learn this truth and more of Solas’s backstory. He was the reason the Elves fell. He had caused the events of the main game by a mistake. His plan was to use Corypheaus to unlock the power of the orb, hoping that the orb would kill him in the process (IIRC), but that didn’t work. And just waking up from a long slumber, Solas couldn’t do nothing to stop him.

The DLC was amazing, however. It sets up Dragon Age 4, with Solas being the big badder, and willing to do whatever it takes to give his people what he had taken from them. And in my opinion, he is going to start another Blight to divide the attention of Thedas. I think that this would be an awesome time to bring back either the HOF or the Orlesian Warden, but this isn’t a DA4 speculation article.

There are many other games that I can list that have their true endings hidden behind dlc and there will probably be many more in the future as when video game companies see green, they’ll do whatever they can to keep generating it, even if it means screwing the fans out of true and proper endings. Cortar contenido es un problema que casi todos los jugadores tienen con los videojuegos. Hay múltiples razones para cortar contenido, como limitaciones de tiempo, problemas con dicho contenido o recursos escasos. Hay un dicho en la industria de los videojuegos que es "No puedes tener miedo de matar a tus bebés", y a veces es la verdad. No importa cuántas horas le dediques a algo, a veces simplemente no puedes hacer que funcione. Pero, ¿qué sucede cuando puede hacer que funcione y el contenido se "corta" simplemente por avaricia y se reutiliza como DLC? Cut-Content será una nueva serie de artículos donde exploro el Cut Content de los videojuegos. Y este primer artículo hablará sobre finales verdaderos para videojuegos que en realidad estaban en DLC.

El primer juego que me viene a la mente es Asura's Wrath. Nunca he jugado el juego, pero escuché todo sobre cómo el verdadero final está bloqueado detrás del DLC. Que, de hecho, el DLC alguna vez estuvo destinado a ser parte del juego original, pero fue "cortado" y reempaquetado como DLC, para que el juego pudiera ganar más dinero.

El siguiente en GamerGeek's ShitList es una serie de juegos de la que he sido fanático desde que salió el primero, y es Assassin's Creed, más específicamente Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Ahora, veo que HiveGC está lleno de fanáticos de AC, por lo que puede rascarse la cabeza con esta entrada, y no podría culparlo, porque lo consideraría un "trampa".

Al final de Brotherhood, vemos a Desmond obligado a apuñalar a Lucy con su espada oculta, dejándola muerta y sangrando, y Desmond en un estado similar a un vegetal. En Assassin's Creed Revelations, Desmond está tratando de evitar que su cerebro sea revuelto y tiene que abrirse camino a través del resto de los recuerdos de Ezio, con la ayuda de la conciencia del Sujeto 16 (Clay Kaczmarek).

La revelación detrás de esto fue realmente horrible. El DLC apestaba y hubiera sido mucho mejor si lo hubiéramos visto en el juego real. Está claro que Lucy tiene sentimientos por Desmond y viceversa, por lo que ver su batalla con quién quiere estar alineada habría sido un drama increíble. Incluso una simple línea al final de AC Brotherhood, donde Juno le dice a Desmond que Lucy es templaria, habría sido más adecuada que este dlc.

El siguiente es Mass Effect 2. Aunque, como el anterior, lo describiría como semi-trampa. Cuando pienso en el final real de ME2, pienso en The Arrival DLC. Cuando jugué por primera vez la serie ME en 2013, no tenía DLC. Entonces, cuando jugué ME3, estaba un poco confundido al principio y me preguntaba por qué Sheperd estaba en Custody. The Arrival tiene a Sheperd rescatando a un científico del sistema Batarian. Este Científico estaba en una estación espacial en un Asteroide que terminó encontrando una Reliquia Proteana, y como resultado todos terminaron adoctrinando. A través de una serie de eventos, Sheperd se entera de que The Reapers estaban a solo unas horas de usar Batarian Mass Relay para ingresar al sistema desde Dark Space. A pesar de que tienes la opción de advertir al sistema Batarian para que evacúe, su destino está sellado. La única forma de detener The Reaper Invasion era estrellar el asteroide contra Mass Relay, lo que prácticamente desempolvó ese sistema, razón por la cual Sheperd está bajo custodia al comienzo de ME3.

ME2 no es la primera vez que EA/Bioware hace algo como esto. Y repitieron esto con Dragon Age: Inquisition. El final de DA:I fue ambiguo. La gente analizó cada parte y el consenso fue que EggHead, quiero decir Solas, era Fen'Harel, el Lobo Terrible. El Lobo Terrible era un Dios Elfo que fue la razón por la cual los Elfos perdieron su inmortalidad y fueron expulsados del paraíso.

En el DLC Trespasser, aprendemos esta verdad y más sobre la historia de fondo de Solas. Él fue la razón por la que los Elfos cayeron. Había causado los eventos del juego principal por un error. Su plan era usar Corypheaus para desbloquear el poder del orbe, con la esperanza de que el orbe lo matara en el proceso (IIRC), pero eso no funcionó. Y recién despertando de un largo sueño, Solas no pudo hacer nada para detenerlo.

Sin embargo, el DLC fue increíble. Establece Dragon Age 4, con Solas siendo el gran malo y dispuesto a hacer lo que sea necesario para darle a su gente lo que les había quitado. Y en mi opinión, va a iniciar otra Ruina para dividir la atención de Thedas. Creo que este sería un momento increíble para recuperar el HOF o el Orlesian Warden, pero este no es un artículo de especulación de DA4.
