Prefacio

Dicen que su padre fue un jötunn y que su madre fue una tormenta de invierno; que tiene cien cuchillos por dientes y que sus canciones de cuna eran alabanzas a la muerte. Dicen que de niña fue alimentada con la sangre de mil bestias, que tiene a su servicio a un ejército maldito y que, cuando llegue el fin del mundo, será la última en caer.

Los escaldos que componen sus canciones la llaman el cuchillo de invierno, la ventisca del crespúsculo, y la asesina sonriente. No obstante, pese a los muchos nombres que ella tuvo y las muchas hazañas que realizó, son muy pocos los que saben cómo fue realmente Skadi.

Y aquellos que la conocieron… que realmente la conocieron, más allá de los títulos, las leyendas o de los rumores plantados por sus enemigos… ignoran muchas de las razones que había detrás de sus decisiones. ¿Eran reales las canciones sobre la reina salvaje proveniente del lejano norte que le vendía a los sureños de Vanaheim? ¿Eran reales sus extraños poderes de skratti (bruja)? ¿O era real la imagen de noble estratega capaz de destruir a sus más acérrimos enemigos con el poder de las palabras?

Me gustaría poder decir que ella fue distinta de los cientos de hombres y dioses de la guerra habituados a vanagloriarse. Pero lo cierto es… que a ella le gustaba vanagloriarse, era tan presumida, belicosa y despiadada como cualquier otro gran héroe de esta era. No habría podido llegar tan lejos en este mundo si hubiese sido gentil, ingenua o agradable. No se habría convertido en la primera gran jareesa de Jötunheim por derecho propio si hubiese sido como cualquier otra gýgr (giganta) a la sombra de un gran guerrero. Ni habría sometido a Odín y a su progenie a sus deseos si sus ambiciones hubiesen sido moderadas o se hubiese conformado con estar siempre en la retaguardia, en lugar del frente en cada batalla… llorando por los hermanos caídos, brindando un escudo a los que aún quedan, mientras la muerte inclemente…aguarda por ella.

Preface

They say that as a child she was fed with the blood of a thousand beasts, that she has a cursed army at her service, and that when the end of the world comes… she will be the last to fall.

The skalds who compose her songs call her the winter knife, the twilight blizzard, and the smiling assassin. Nevertheless, despite the many names she held and the many deeds she performed, very few truly know who Skadi was.

And those who knew her… those who truly knew her, beyond the titles, the legends, or the rumors planted by her enemies… are unaware of many of the reasons behind her decisions. Were the songs about the wild queen from the far north, who sold her services to the southerners of Vanaheim, real? Were her strange powers as a skratti (witch) real? Or was the image of the noble strategist, capable of destroying her fiercest enemies with the power of words, the true one?

I would like to say that she was different from the hundreds of men and war gods accustomed to boasting. But the truth is… she loved to boast; she was as vain, bellicose, and ruthless as any other great hero of this era. She could not have made it so far in this world had she been gentle, naive, or pleasant. She would not have become the first great jaryessa of Jötunheim in her own right had she been like any other gýgr (giantess) in the shadow of a great warrior. Nor would she have bent Odin and his progeny to her will if her ambitions had been moderate or if she had been content to remain always in the rear, instead of at the front of every battle… weeping for fallen brothers, providing a shield for those who remain, while inclement death… waits for her.
