It's been a wild few days for the industry, there is no doubt that the year has started with a very busy month, not so much in releases, but in announcements, yesterday we had the Xbox live where they not only announced a NEW NINJA GAIDEN, but also a remake of Ninja Gaiden 2 that is available NOW, so if you like Ninja Gaiden you have a lot of work to do, that's not including the 2D game that The Game Kitchen is working on, but that's not what I'm here to talk about today. Everything has happened, including what was thought to be a hint towards the date of the next Hollow Knight: Silksong announcement, but among all the hype built up for possible releases and actual releases, one flame was finally extinguished, a game we last saw two years ago died for good, as the title suggests, I'm talking about Earthblade.

Probably everyone will think, “who?”, and I don't blame them, but to summarize it's the game Extremely OK Games was working on, the studio responsible for my favorite indie, Celeste, a game that if you've read any of my posts about it needs no introduction, my favorite platform game and one that marked me for life, a game that touches the same theme as many others, but that does it in a spectacular way and that at the rate I'm going I will never stop loving or get tired of playing, that brings us to what really concerns in this case, their next game.

In 2021 the game was announced, with an approximate date for 2023, there wasn't even a trailer, just an announcement, the first trailer wouldn't arrive until The Game Awards of 2022, a moment that I lived with great excitement and that was everything I could expect and more, a Metroidvania designed by the hands that made Celeste, an absolute madness that I had to play as soon as possible, but that was the first trailer we got, and it would also be the last one. The Game Awards of 2023 came and against my expectations there was no announcement, no trailer, not even a message from the studio that I remember just now, but knowing that it's a small team and they work at their pace I decided to wait patiently, it wasn't until the first half of 2024 that I had news of the game, and it was simply to announce that Earthblade wouldn't be ready for 2024, a bit disappointing but understandable, as a wise man once said, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game will be bad forever”, so based on that I preferred to be patient knowing that in the end I would have a game to remember, I thought the same even when at The Game Awards 2024 there was no trailer, until a few days ago the news came from the studio.

Maddy from EXOK wrote what she called a “Earthblade Final Update”, announcing the cancellation of the project and taking responsibility for any discomfort or inconvenience they may have caused to fans (like me) who were looking forward to the game. Everything is due to internal problems of the studio and the departure of one of their creatives and friend, who decided to make his own game independently, someone who they insist is not an enemy and they wish him the best. Despite this departure, which was at the beginning of 2024, hence the announcement of the delay with the idea that EXOK would continue working on the game as they were happy with how the game was turning out, which eventually became an incomplete task, which led them to decide in December 2024 to cancel it, with the announcement pending for just a few days ago, and here we are.

I'm not lying when I say that I took the news very badly, I'm not afraid to admit that I was sentimentally involved in the project and I was expecting a lot, not only from the game itself but from its music, Lena Raine is a wonderful composer whom I admire enormously and seeing her working again with the Celeste team was all I could ask for, I guess she will eventually return to collaborate with the studio, but certainly for me Earthblade had everything it needed to be one of my favorite games, and the favorite candidate for indie of the year this 2025. I really like platform games, I really like metroidvanias, and seeing what these people would achieve by putting both together was certainly going to be something I was going to enjoy, I wonder if someday they will decide to show a little more of the project or just bury everything and pretend it never happened, either way I just wanted to dedicate a post to that game that we will never have, and that whether you expected or not, whether you knew it or not, it was surely going to earn a place in the hearts of many people.

That said, it only remains to wait to see EXOK's next projects, and recommend Celeste again, if you like platformers like me, it's worth a lot besides running on any toaster. With Earthblade out of the way, it remains to see if Silksong is finally released this year, it's about time, but honestly at this point the devs have been so disrespectful that it matters little to me, I look forward to February to play Monster Hunter Wilds, and the rest of the year we'll see what comes out, thank you very much for reading, and see you around. Llegaron los The Game Awards de 2023 y contra mis expectativas no hubo un anuncio, ni un trailer, ni siquiera un mensaje del estudio que yo recuerde justo ahora, pero a sabiendas de que es un equipo pequeño y trabajan a su paso decidí esperar pacientemente, no fue hasta la primera mitad de 2024 que tuve novedades del juego, y era simplemente para anunciar que Earthblade no estaría listo para 2024, un poco decepcionante pero entendible, como dijo un sabio alguna vez, “Un juego retrasado es eventualmente bueno, pero un juego apresurado será malo para siempre”, así que en base a eso preferí ser paciente a sabiendas de que al final tendría un juego el cual recordar, pensé lo mismo aún cuando en los The Game Awards de 2024 no hubo un trailer, hasta que hace unos días llegó la noticia de parte del estudio.

Maddy de EXOK escribió lo que llamó una “Actualización final sobre Earthblade”, anunciando la cancelación del proyecto y asumiendo la responsabilidad por todo el malestar o molestias que pudieron haber causado a los fans (como yo) que esperaban con ansias el juego. Todo se debe a problemas internos del estudio y a la partida de uno de sus creativos y amigo, que decidió hacer su propio juego de forma independiente, alguien a quien insisten no es un enemigo y le desean lo mejor posible. A pesar de esta partida, la cual fue a inicios de 2024, por ello el anuncio del retraso con la idea de que EXOK siguiera trabajando en el juego ya que estaban felices con como el juego estaba quedando, cosa que eventualmente se convirtió en una tarea incompletable, lo cual les llevó a decidir en diciembre del 2024 la cancelación, con el anuncio pendiente para hace tan solo unos días, y aquí estamos.

No miento cuando digo que me tomó muy mal la noticia, no temo reconocer que estaba involucrada sentimentalmente en el proyecto y esperaba muchísimo, no solo del juego en sí sino de su música, Lena Raine es una compositora maravillosa a la que admiro enormemente y verla trabajando de nuevo con el equipo de Celeste era todo lo que podía pedir, supongo que eventualmente ella volverá a colaborar con el estudio, pero ciertamente para mi Earthblade tenía todo lo necesario para ser uno de mis juegos favoritos, y el candidato favorito a indie del año este 2025. Me gustan mucho los juegos de plataformas, me gustan muchísimo los metroidvanias, y ver lo que esta gente lograría juntando ambas cosas ciertamente iba a ser algo que iba a disfrutar, me pregunto si algún día decidirán mostrar un poco más del proyecto o simplemente enterrarán todo y harán como que nunca pasó, de cualquier forma solo quería dedicar un post a ese juego que nunca tendremos, y que esperasen o no, conociesen o no, seguramente iba a ganarse un lugar en el corazón de muchas personas.

Dicho eso, solo queda esperar a ver los siguientes proyectos de EXOK, y recomendarles de nuevo Celeste, si les gustan los juegos de plataformas como a mi, vale mucho la pena aparte de correr en cualquier tostadora. Con Earthblade fuera del paso, queda ver si este año se lanza Silksong finalmente, ya es hora, pero honestamente a estas alturas los devs han sido tan irrespetuosos que poco me importa, espero con muchas ganas a febrero para jugar Monster Hunter Wilds, y el resto del año veremos lo que sale, muchas gracias por leer, y nos vemos por ahí. P.D: No puedo ser más feliz pues me acabo de enterar que Lena Raine lanzará eventualmente el soundtrack que tenía listo para el juego, supongo que aún hay algo de Earthblade que valdrá la pena esperar en el futuro.
