“Save the Rich” (2012)

“Save the Rich,” is a brilliant parody of 1985’s charity recording “We Are the World.”

In 1985, many great and famous artists came together in an effort to raise funds for famine relief in Africa. The resulting single became one of the best-selling and most popular singles of all time, surpassing the 20-million mark, and contributed greatly to the famine relief.

Over 2008–2010, the filthy rich in the USA and elsewhere were faced with the horrifying prospect of losing shitloads of their money. Not all of their money, and not many of their assets, but much more than poor plebeians like you and I can ever imagine.

This time, the powers-that-be didn’t even wait for any generous, philanthropic efforts from either the musicians or us common folk. No, they just took bold action and took the money – I mean, “our” money – straight from the public coffers, and handed it to the rich. Billions of it.

And when the coffers were empty, they took even bolder action, engaging in something we plebes could never comprehend, something mystifyingly called “Quantitative Easing” (QE).

Whatever QE was, it seems to have worked, cuz the rich soon got back on “Easy Street.” And they stayed there. Yep, we saved the rich. The cleverly named comedy-folk duo Garfunkel and Oates took their name from what they call “"two famous rock-and-roll second bananas" – those “lesser halves” known as Art Garfunkel and John Oates.
