Joo Kraus was born on the 22nd of November 1966 in Ulm, Germany. He was a student at the **Hochschule für Musik in Munich** from 1985 to 1988. At the age of 19, he won the German national competition **'Jugend musiziert**'. Together with bassist Hellmut Hattler, he founded the 'Hip-Jazz Duo' **Tab Two** immediately after completing his studies. - I am going to come back to this at the end of the matinee. *** > Bevor ich auf das neue Album des Trompeters **Joo Kraus** zu sprechen komme, möchte ich diesen Künstler vorstellen, der am heutigen Sonntag einige Kompositionen aus einem ungewöhnlich großen Repertoire vorstellen wird. Once again, Joo Kraus builds up musically contrasting worlds that come together to form a compelling whole. Von meiner Begeisterung darf ausgegangen werden, denn ansonsten hätte ich wohl kaum eine Einladung ausgesprochen. Aber was sagt die Musikkritik dazu? „Bewegende Musik voller Emotionen und Tiefgang. Auf den ersten Blick sauber, unterhaltsam und tanzbar, doch je tiefer man in die (nicht nur) musikalischen Inhalte eintaucht, desto deutlicher wird, dass hier eine Vielzahl schwieriger Themen zu reflektieren sind. Joo Kraus baut hier auch musikalisch gegensätzliche Welten auf, die zu einer zwingenden Einheit werden. From acid jazz to hip-hop, rock, Latin or ambient, there have never been obstacles that the musician and singer-songwriter could not overcome. During the creation of 'No Excuse', Joo Kraus certainly had the question in mind: *"What do I have to say today? Because the lyrics of the music go deep into the rifts in society, which have taken on an almost oppressive dimension in the meantime.”* *** > In der nun fast vier Jahrzehnte andauernden Schaffensphase des Ulmer Trompeters gab es so gut wie nie einen wirklich kreativen Stillstand. Vom Acid-Jazz, hin zu Hip-Hop, Rock, Latin oder Ambient – für den Musiker und Singer-Songwriter gab es nie Hürden, die nicht zu überwinden waren. Bei der Entstehung von „No Excuse“ stellte sich Joo Kraus mit Sicherheit die Frage: „Was habe ich heute zu sagen?“ Denn die Texte zur Musik gehen tief hinein in die Kluften der Gesellschaft, die inzwischen nahezu bedrückende Ausmaße angenommen haben. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceayLDySU4I& For the sober-minded jazz lover who tends to concentrate on the instrumental side of things, the album does not attempt a balancing act. Instead, it weaves pop, funk and hip-hop into jazz. The spectrum is immense, and it seems to be guaranteed that there will be something for every taste. Joo Kraus has a very simple but understandable explanation for this range: *"I like so many things and it has always been difficult for me to make a decision. Now I've simply decided that I don't have to choose"* . *** > Für den nüchtern betrachtenden Jazz-Liebhaber, der sich eher auf das Instrumentale konzentriert, sei gesagt, dass auch dem Album kein Spagat geprobt wird, sondern Pop, Funk und Hip-Hop in den Jazz mit eingewoben wurden. Das Spektrum ist immens und damit scheint garantiert, für alle Geschmäcker etwas im Gepäck zu haben. Joo Kraus hat für diese Bandbreite eine ganz einfache, aber gut nachvollziehbare Erklärung: „Ich mag so viele Dinge, und es ist mir immer schwer gefallen, mich zu entscheiden. At his side were percussionist **Torsten Krill, bassist Veit Hübner, guitarist Jo Ambros and Bobbi Fischer on piano and electric piano**. They were joined on one or two tracks by special guests - like **Malia**, who gave the song **"Chaka Boom"** that certain something that could make it a hit. I would like to end with an assessment that I came across in the course of my research: *"Joo Kraus has much to say. No excuse for the political decisions of the autocrats and political egos of this world, which are currently the cause of so much suffering for so many people. The trumpet acts as an intermediary between the music and the ear."* *** > Ganz ohne Begleitung fand der Trompeter den Weg ins Aufnahmestudio dann aber auch nicht. Mit dabei waren: der Schlagzeuger **Torsten Krill, Bassist Veit Hübner, Gitarrist Jo Ambros und Bobbi Fischer an Klavier und E-Piano**. Dazu gesellten sich für den einen oder anderen Titel noch die sogenannten »Special Guests« – wie zum Beispiel **Malia**, die dem Song **„Chaka Boom“** das gewisse Etwas verleiht, was ihn zum „Hit“ werden lassen könnte. Abschließen möchte ich mit einer Einschätzung, über die ich bei der Recherche gestolpert bin: „Joo Kraus hat viel zu sagen. Keine Entschuldigung für die politischen Entscheidungen der Autokraten und Polit-Egos dieser Welt, unter denen auch aktuell so viele Menschen leiden.
