Hola, mis amigos de worldmappin. Que placer saludarlos. Hoy seguimos con las maravillas de La Habana. Sin pensarlo mucho, ayer me fui a caminar y los pasos me llevaron hasta la Plaza de la Revolución. Pero no para quedarme en el medio, que eso ya lo conozco, sino para subir al Memorial José Martí. Llevaba años sin pisarlo, y ya era hora de volver a subir a su mirador, el punto más alto de La Habana. >Hello, my friends from worldmappin. What a pleasure to greet you. Today we continue with the wonders of Havana. > >Without giving it much thought, yesterday I went out for a walk and my steps led me to Plaza de la Revolución. But not to stay in the middle—I already know that—but to go up to the José Martí Memorial. It had been years since I'd last set foot there, and it was high time to return to its lookout, the highest point in Havana.

La mañana estaba con ese cielo azul que solo tiene La Habana. Antes de subir, me quedé un rato mirando la estatua de Martí, sentado en aquel banco de piedra, con la mirada perdida hacia el Malecón. Parece que está pensando en nosotros, en cómo anda la cosa. La gente pasa rápido, pero yo me quedé quieta un rato mirando y admirando la magnificencia del lugar. >The morning had that blue sky that only Havana has. Before going up, I stood for a while looking at the statue of Martí, sitting on that stone bench, his gaze lost toward the Malecón. It seems like he's thinking about us, about how things are going. People rush past, but I stayed still for a moment, looking and admiring the magnificence of the place.

Subi por la rampa y ya en la entrada del Memorial, pagué los pocos pesos que cuesta la entrada y comencé mi recorrido por ese sitio de tanto valor histórico para los cubanos. Allí se encuentran muchos objetos que fueron de Martí, fotos, pinturas, documentos y hasta un pedestal donde Martí hablaba. >I went up the ramp and at the entrance to the Memorial, I paid the few pesos the ticket costs and began my tour of this site of such historical value to Cubans. There you'll find many objects that belonged to Martí: photos, paintings, documents, and even a pedestal where Martí used to speak.

Hay un detalle dentro del lugar que llamó mucho mi atención, las paredes, todas de verde, el color de la esperanza, están llenas de frases dichas por nuestro Apóstol José Martí, un hombre noble y sabio que vivió para luchar por la independencia de Cuba. Una de esas frases decía: “Ser culto es el único modo de ser libre”. Y otra: "Los Presidentes son para unir y no para dividir". >One detail inside that caught my attention was the walls, all green—the color of hope—covered in phrases spoken by our Apostle José Martí, a noble and wise man who lived to fight for Cuba's independence. One of those phrases read: "To be cultured is the only way to be free." And another: "Presidents are meant to unite, not to divide."

Otros cosa curiosa fue ver un taller donde los niños dibujan, leen y crean. Todo allí es relacionado con Martí. >Another curious thing was seeing a workshop where children draw, read, and create. Everything there is related to Martí.

Luego de mi recorrido por la parte de abajo, me subí en el ascensor, que parece el de un hotel cinco estrellas, para ir al punto más alto de capital cubana. Al llegar arriba, en la punta de la torre, el aire te da en la cara y se te escapa un “ay, Dios mío”. Es algo muy emocionante, desde allí ves toda la ciudad: el Capitolio, el Malecón, los edificios medio descascarados pero todavía firmes, y el mar azul que parece una sábana estirada. >After my tour of the lower part, I got into the elevator—which looks like it belongs in a five-star hotel—to go up to the highest point of the Cuban capital. Upon reaching the top, at the tip of the tower, the wind hits your face and you can't help but say, "Oh my God." It's incredibly moving. From up there you see the whole city: the Capitol, the Malecón, the half-peeling but still sturdy buildings, and the blue sea stretched out like a sheet.

Me dio una alegría el pecho, una mezcla de orgullo y nostalgia. Porque desde arriba, La Habana es un espectáculo belleza, aunque abajo tenga sus problemitas. >A joy swelled in my chest, a mix of pride and nostalgia. Because from above, Havana is a stunning spectacle, even if down below it has its little problems.

Caminé por el mirador y me asomé a cada lado, a cada uno de los cuatro puntos cardinales y disfruté del maravilloso paisaje. Toqué las losas frías y pensé en la cantidad de gente que ha pasado por ahí. Me senté en un banco de marmol y allí estuve por un rato. >I walked around the lookout, peering to each side, to each of the four cardinal points, and enjoyed the marvelous view. I touched the cold stone tiles and thought of all the people who have passed through there. I sat down on a marble bench and stayed there for a while.

Bajé más tranquila, como si hubiera soltado un peso. La señora de la taquilla me sonrió y me dijo: “¿Te gustó, hija?”. Y yo le respondí: “Mucho". Esto hay que vivirlo, no solo contarlo”. Ir al memorial es como visitar a un amigo que te recuerda quién eres y para dónde vas, aunque el camino esté lleno de hoyos. >I came down more calmly, as if I had shed a weight. The lady at the ticket booth smiled at me and said, "Did you like it, dear?" And I answered, "Very much. This is something you have to experience, not just talk about." Going to the memorial is like visiting a friend who reminds you who you are and where you're headed, even if the road is full of potholes.

Así que si vienes por La Habana, no te quedes solo con la foto de la plaza. Sube, paga la entrada, quédate un rato en silencio. Te lo dice una cubana que encontró allí, entre el viento y las losas frías, una razón más para luchar y para querer a esta tierra. >So if you come to Havana, don't just settle for the photo of the plaza. Go up, pay the entrance fee, stay for a while in silence. Take it from a Cuban woman who found there, amid the wind and the cold tiles, one more reason to fight and to love this land.
