Con tanta guerra, delincuencia y actos de violencia aleatoria a nivel mundial, es lógico pensar que el mundo se ha ido al demonio y que estamos viviendo en el infierno. Yo mismo he pensado muchas veces en ello en los peores momentos de mi vida. No obstante, la gente a veces se olvida de que aún seguimos aquí y este hecho significa que tenemos la oportunidad de hacer frente a esos desafíos.
Aunque haya actos de violencia, caos y muerte, también tenemos actos de generosidad, determinación y valentía que no suelen aparecer mucho en los titulares de prensa, pero que también tienen su importancia, porque son esos actos los que nos hacen creer que podemos superar nuestras sombras y salir del abismo.
Es por ello que quiero compartir una historia que vi en la prensa y que me llamó la atención. Se trata de dos hombres completamente distintos, con creencias distintas, que se encontraron el 20 de enero de 2023 en el Hospital St James. El primero de ellos se llama Nathan Newby y estaba internado por haber contraído una infección pulmonar cuando salió del hospital a tomar aire fresco.
Antes de ese día, Nathan Newby había sido un hombre común y corriente, al que apenas le dedicarías una mirada mientras caminas por la calle. No obstante, ese día, por alguna causa inexplicable del destino, estuvo en el lugar justo, en el momento justo, para evitar una masacre que habría matado a cientos de personas.
Dicha masacre iba a ser perpetrada por Mohammed Farooq, un musulmán radicalizado que había elegido atacar al hospital con una bomba casera. Farooq nunca había cometido actos terroristas antes de ese día. No obstante, había acumulado una enorme ira y frustración que fue alimentada por las redes sociales de la dark web.

With so much war, crime, and acts of random violence worldwide, it is logical to think that the world has gone to hell and that we are living in a nightmare. I myself have thought about this many times during the darkest moments of my life. However, people sometimes forget that we are still here, and this fact means we have the opportunity to face those challenges.

Even though there are acts of violence, chaos, and death, we also have acts of generosity, determination, and courage that do not usually appear much in the headlines, but are equally important. It is these acts that make us believe we can overcome our shadows and emerge from the abyss.

That is why I want to share a story I saw in the news that caught my attention. It is about two completely different men, with different beliefs, who met on January 20, 2023, at St James’s Hospital. The first is named Nathan Newby, who was hospitalized with a lung infection and had stepped outside to get some fresh air.

Before that day, Nathan Newby had been an ordinary man, someone you would hardly glance at while walking down the street. Nevertheless, on that day, by some inexplicable twist of fate, he was in the right place at the right time to prevent a massacre that would have killed hundreds of people.

That massacre was intended to be carried out by Mohammed Farooq, a radicalized individual who had chosen to attack the hospital with a homemade bomb. Farooq had never committed terrorist acts before that day. However, he had accumulated an enormous amount of anger and frustration, fueled by social media on the dark web.

He felt invisible, alone, and lost in a society he did not understand.

And on that day, he encountered someone who, for the first time in who knows how long, listened to him and treated him like a human being. When Newby saw the backpack with explosives, he didn’t run, because he knew there was no way to escape the blast; he didn’t fight or scream at the man with the detonator either. He simply spoke to him, gave him a hug, and convinced him to surrender to the police.

An event that could have ended in tragedy was resolved with words. Not with gunfire, not with a bomb squad, but with an attentive and compassionate ear. The news article does not give many details about what they discussed, but their conversation was significant enough to prevent him from triggering the detonator.

The lesson this story leaves us is that even in the worst-case scenario, where we could be killed by someone radicalized, words still have the power to change many lives.
