Every year the same thing happens, June approaches and my expectations start to rise. It is a time of celebration for those of us who have video games as a hobby, and although this year has been quite tough for those who work to make us enjoy, with layoffs in almost every video game company and closures of such important studios as Tango Gameworks (which I will talk about later), it is perhaps difficult to think that it has been a good year. And, in my opinion, it hasn't been, after 2023, a year filled with impressive titles, it is hard for what has happened in 2024 so far not to feel inferior. But despite all that, even though we don't have E3 and instead have the Summer Game Fest, even if all events end up being disappointing, every year I can't help but get excited about this time, theorize with my friends about what we might see, and think about what we will play in the future. The title speaks for itself, I want to focus on the latest trailer of Monster Hunter Wilds, one that took me by surprise because, for me, I wouldn't see anything until the main event of Summer Game Fest on June 7th, which I am also eagerly looking forward to. But before thinking about the future again, let's talk about what we already know, as I wanted to give my impressions of what will probably be my GOTY of 2025.

Monster Hunter World, but bigger

When MHW (Wilds) was first announced at The Game Awards 2023, there were a lot of doubts about the game's structure, some things suggested that they could make an open world, something that completely breaks with the basic concepts of the Monster Hunter formula, which while in World they eliminated loading screens between areas, they did not opt for an open world but for a large hunting environment, alive and full of monsters and plants to increase our inventory. This time, Capcom opts for a huge initial map, the Barlovento Plains, a kind of desert that, like the rest of the maps we do not know, will have two very marked variations, one where the biome is prosperous and full of life, and another extremely aggressive where it will be much more difficult to survive, which also marks differences in the creatures we will see in one variation or another, something I found very interesting. We still do not know if this new area where Wilds takes place, the Forbidden Lands, is part of the new or old world, but it's a detail I'd like to know more about, who knows, maybe in the next trailer we see in a few days.

All the 14 weapons are back, AND WE CAN CARRY TWO!

Before knowing anything about Monster Hunter Wilds, I thought that for a future installment we could see a weapon change in the middle of combat, without having to return to camp to switch your equipment, and although it can't be done at any time as if you had both weapons on you, we can have a second weapon available, which will be stored in our mount's pack, the Seikret. The Seikret is the creature that we see the hunter riding during the trailers, which was suspected to have inventory functionality beyond simply helping us move better, and while the inventory part is not clear, we do know that it can store an extra weapon, which we can exchange for the one we have equipped, in the trailer they show us the hunter swapping his Great Sword for a (I think, heavy) Crossbow . In addition to this, in the trailer we can see how the Seikret can help us when the monster in question knocks us down, a way to recover that would replace the Wirebugs from Rise, and which in my opinion looks better at first glance, which brings me to my next point.

This may be more or less accurate because there is still much to see, but in my opinion, with Wilds they want to set aside things that were implemented in Rise, which is NOT a bad game by any means, but if I have to choose between one and the other, I prefer more of World than Rise, which means abandoning both the Wirebugs and the weapon skills that are activated with them. Instead, we have the Focus Mode, shown in the trailer and explained a little better on the game's official website, indicating that we can use this "mode" to hit the monsters' weak points more efficiently. I do not quite understand how automatic this system is, but I have faith that we will see it explained further in the Summer Game Fest.

There are a couple of details that are noticeable in the trailer or were explained externally that I would like to comment on. The first is how some of the game's suits give me "vibes" of Monster Hunter, for example, the blacksmith, who as a friend said, seems to be taken from a Dontnod game (Life is Strange), or together they remind me more of suits we could see in a Devil May Cry, because in my opinion the hunter from the trailer reminds me a lot of Nero, just as the blacksmith seems like Nico's cousin, also from DMC, and this doesn't bother me at all, I love the designs and the internet went crazy over Gemma, the blacksmith, so there's little to say here. The other thing that is also new is that this time our hunter will have dialogue lines for the first time in the main line of Monster Hunter games; until now we had always been limited to grunts or sounds that did not go beyond a couple of words, as in Monster Hunter Rise, so it will certainly be interesting to see the tone of this game, something that I could not be more excited and expectant about, as it is the first game I plan to buy at launch, which considering the economy of my country, is a big deal, but that is a separate topic.

Anyway, these are my general impressions of the trailer and surely it won't be the only time I talk about Wilds before the game's release, we'll see how much information Capcom reveals before the launch, and who knows, maybe a demo would be a dream since Dragon's Dogma 2 had nothing beyond character creation, but we'll see. Cada año ocurre exactamente lo mismo, se acerca junio y mis expectativas empiezan a aumentar, es una época de celebración para aquellos que tenemos los videojuegos por hobby, y si bien este año ha sido bastante duro para aquellos que trabajan para que nosotros disfrutemos, con despidos en casi todas las compañías de videojuegos y cierres de estudios tan importantes como Tango Gameworks (de lo cual hablaré luego) es difícil quizá pensar en que ha sido un buen año, y no lo ha sido a mi consideración, después de 2023, un año cargado de títulos impresionantes, es difícil que lo que va de 2024 no se sienta inferior. Pero a pesar de todo eso, aunque no tengamos E3 y en su lugar tengamos el Summer Game Fest, aunque todos los eventos terminen siendo decepcionantes, todos los años no puedo evitar emocionarme con esta época, teorizar con mis amigos lo que podríamos ver y pensar en lo que jugaremos a futuro, eso es lo que valoro realmente y lo cual va muy de la mano con uno de los anuncios del ya pasado State of Play de PlayStation. El título habla por sí solo, quiero enfocarme en el trailer más reciente de Monster Hunter Wilds, uno que me tomó por sorpresa pues, para mi no vería nada hasta el evento principal del Summer Game Fest el 7 de junio, que también espero con muchas ganas, pero antes de pensar en el futuro otra vez, hablemos de lo que ya sabemos, pues quería dar mis impresiones del que será muy probablemente mi GOTY del año 2025.

Monster Hunter World, pero más grande

Cuando se anunció por primera vez MHW (Wilds) en los The Game Awards del 2023 había un montón de dudas sobre la estructura del juego, algunas cosas sugerían que podrían hacer un mundo abierto, algo que rompe totalmente con los conceptos básicos de la fórmula de Monster Hunter, que si bien en World eliminaron las pantallas de carga entre zonas, no apostaron por un mundo abierto sino por un entorno de cacería grande, vivo y lleno de monstruos y plantas para aumentar nuestro inventario. Esta vez, Capcom apuesta por un mapa inicial enorme, los Llanos Barlovento, una especie de desierto que, al igual que el resto de mapas que no conocemos, tendrá dos variaciones muy marcadas, una donde el bioma es próspero y lleno de vida, y otro extremadamente agresivo donde será mucho más difícil sobrevivir, lo cual también marca diferencias en las criaturas que veremos en una variación u otra, algo que encontré muy interesante. Aún desconocemos si esta nueva zona en la que se desarrolla Wilds, las Tierras Prohibidas, forman parte del nuevo o viejo mundo, pero es un detalle del que me gustaría saber más, quién sabe, quizá en el próximo trailer que veamos dentro de unos pocos días.

Vuelven las 14 armas, ¡y ahora podemos llevar DOS!

Desde antes de saber cualquier cosa de Monster Hunter Wilds, pensaba que para una siguiente entrega podríamos ver un cambio de armas en medio del combate, sin tener que volver al campamento para cambiar tu equipo, y aunque no se puede hacer en cualquier momento como si tuvieras las dos armas encima, sí podemos disponer de una segunda arma, que irá guardada en la alforja de nuestra montura, el Seikret. El Seikret es esa criatura en la que vemos al cazador montado durante los trailer, que se sospechaba tendría función de inventario más allá de simplemente ayudarnos a movernos mejor, y si bien la parte del inventario no está clara, sí sabemos que puede almacenar un arma extra, la cual podemos intercambiar por la que tengamos encima, en el trailer nos lo muestran con el cazador cambiando su Gran Espada por una Ballesta (según yo, pesada). Además de esto, en el trailer podemos ver como el Seikret nos puede ayudar cuando el monstruo en cuestión nos derribe, una forma de recuperarse que reemplazaría los cordópteros de Rise, y que a mi parecer está mejor a simple vista, lo cual me lleva a mi siguiente punto.

Esto puede ser más o menos acertado pues falta mucho por ver, pero a mi criterio con Wilds quieren dejar de lado cosas que se implementaron en Rise, que NO es un mal juego ni de lejos, pero si me hacen escoger entre uno y otro, prefiero más de World, que más de Rise, lo cual equivale a abandonar tanto los cordópteros como las habilidades de las armas que se activan con estos, en su lugar tenemos el Modo Focus, que nos muestran en el trailer y nos explican un poco mejor en la página oficial del juego, donde indica que podremos utilizar este “modo” para golpear de forma más eficiente los puntos débiles de los monstruos, y no termino de entender qué tan automático es este sistema, pero tengo fe de que lo veremos más explicado en el Summer Game Fest.

Quedan un par de detalles de que se notan en el trailer o se explicaron externamente y me gustaría comentar, el primero es lo poco que algunos trajes del juego me dan “vibes” a Monster Hunter, por ejemplo, la encargada, que como un amigo dijo, parece sacada de un juego de Dontnod (Life is Strange), o en conjunto a mi me recuerdan más a trajes que podríamos ver en un Devil May Cry, pues a mi criterio el cazador del trailer me recuerda un montón a Nero, así como la herrera parece prima de Nico, también de DMC, y esto no me desagrada, para nada, me encantan los diseños e internet enloqueció con Gemma, la herrera, así que hay poco que decir acá. Lo otro que también es una novedad, es que en esta ocasión nuestro cazador (o cazadora) tendrá líneas de diálogo por primera vez en la línea principal de juegos de Monster Hunter, hasta entonces siempre nos habíamos limitado a gruñidos o sonidos que no iban más allá de un par de palabras, como en Monster Hunter Rise, por lo que ciertamente será interesante ver el tono de este juego, algo por lo que no podría estar más emocionada y expectante pues, es el primer juego que planeo comprar de salida, algo que en base a la economía de mi país son palabras mayores, pero eso es un tema aparte.

En fin, estas son mis impresiones generales del trailer y seguramente no será la única vez que hable de Wilds antes de la salida del juego, ya veremos cuanta información divulga Capcom antes del lanzamiento, y quién sabe, quizá una demo sea soñar pues Dragon’s Dogma 2 no tuvo nada más allá de la creación de personaje, pero ya veremos.
