Plot

The anime begins by introducing us to Azusa Kannawa, who, apart from being responsible and very skilled at her job in the advertising department, also has a reputation for being cold and intimidating. However, one day new employees join the company, including Yū Kamegawa, who will start working as Kannawa's subordinate, which will be quite a challenge for her. This is because, in reality, our beautiful and strict protagonist is actually someone who is clumsy and has always had difficulty relating to others, which is why she has pretended to be cold and difficult to deal with in order to avoid embarrassment.

This isn't the first time I've seen a RomCom of this style, but I now consider it to be just as common as high school or college RomComs. Although both types of works belong to the same genre, there is a clear difference in their demographics (or rather, their target audience). While a teenage romance anime is called a Shōnen (teenager), a romance between two young adults is clearly a Seinen (young adults). This type of office worker RomCom has been gaining popularity for a few years now. Or at least that's what I've noticed in recent years, seeing that every season, an anime RomCom of this style was always broadcast. While it doesn't have the same impact or popularity as the Shōnen demographic RomCom, I won't deny that I find these types of stories entertaining, especially since I am a young adult myself. So, as a target audience for this type of anime, I'm a little intrigued by the way they live their lives and mix their romances with their jobs and personal lives. While there are differences, both types of RomComs also have their similarities.

No es la primera vez que veo un RomCom de este estilo, en cambio ya lo considero como algo tan común ahora, al igual que los los RomCom de adolescentes de secundaria o preparatoria. Si bien ambos tipos de obras poseen los mismos géneros, hay una clara diferencia y es su demografía (o mejor dicho, el público al cual está dirigido). Mientras que un anime de romance adolescente se denomina como un Shōnen (adolescente), uno de romance entre dos jóvenes adultos es claramente un Seinen (jóvenes/adultos). Este tipo de RomCom de oficinistas es algo que ha empezado a popularizarse desde hace ya unos cuantos años. O al menos es lo que he notado en estos últimos años al ver que, en cada temporada, siempre se emitía un anime RomCom de este estilo. Si bien no tiene el mismo impacto o popularidad que el RomCom de demografía Shōnen, tampoco voy a negar que me parece entretenido este tipo de historias, sobre todo porque ya soy un joven adulto como tal. Así que como público objetivo que soy de este tipo de animes, me llama un poco la atención la forma en la que viven sus vidas y mezclan sus romances con sus trabajos y sus vidas personales. Si bien tiene sus diferencias, ambos tipos de RomCom tienen también sus parecidos.

So, the fact that this has been changed in this anime is something worth noting, as is Azusa Kannawa's unique personality. Because, clearly, to give us a female character as the protagonist who is not sexualized with a lot of fanservice and/or steamy scenes with her lover, Azusa Kannawa stands out for her very different personality. At first, we see her as a responsible office worker, intimately cold and even rude to her coworkers. However, over time we see that she is actually clumsy when it comes to dealing with people and never manages to say what she really thinks or feels. This ends up in misunderstandings or confusion due to her clumsy way of communicating.

Bueno, supongo que no hace falta decir más para que supongan por dónde es que nacerá toda la trama romántica que iremos viendo a lo largo de este anime. Me gusta que, en esta ocasión, tenemos a una protagonista muy diferente a las que comúnmente vemos en este tipo de animes RomCom de oficina. Normalmente las protagonistas femeninas no llegan a destacar tanto como digamos, siendo mayormente el personaje masculino el que lleva la mayor parte del protagonismo. Así que el haber cambiado esto en este anime es algo a destacar, al igual que sucede con la personalidad particular que tiene Azusa Kannawa. Porque, claramente, para darnos a un personaje femenino como protagonista que no llegaron a sexualizar con un montón de fanservice y/o escenas calientes con su enamorado; Azusa Kannawa se destaca por su personalidad tan dispar. Al principio la vemos como una oficinista responsable, íntimamente fría y hasta ruda con sus compañeros de trabajo. Sin embargo, con el tiempo vemos que en realidad es alguien torpe al momento de tratar a la gente y que nunca logra decir lo que de verdad piensa o siente. When we are introduced to a character like Kannawa, it is normal for anyone to want to see how he will form a friendship that, over time, will become something more. And the fact that all this happens in their workplace is just the hallmark of this type of office worker RomCom. Both the meetings and the business trips they go on together are perfect places for this relationship to develop in the best possible way. Clearly, when it comes to romance, this anime can leave a lot to be desired as it is somewhat slow. The anime takes its time to get the two main characters to have a relationship as such, since they start from scratch as complete strangers. Also, Kannawa's clumsiness causes many moments to turn into pure misunderstandings or just awkward moments. Another detail I don't really like about this anime is the number of typical clichés we see in any RomCom. While they don't overdo it too much, it can sometimes be a little stressful how certain episodes end with such predictable plot twists. But hey, like any other RomCom, this was to be expected.

Al presentarnos a un personaje como Kannawa es normal que cualquiera desee ver cómo llegará a formar una amistad que, con el tiempo, se convertirá en algo más. Y el hecho de que todo esto suceda en su lugar de trabajo es nomás el distintivo de este tipo de RomCom de oficinistas. Tanto las reuniones como los viajes de trabajo en el que van juntos son sitios perfectos para que dicha relación se desarrolle de la mejor manera posible. Claramente, en cuanto al tema de romance, este anime puede dejar mucho de qué desear al ser un tanto lento. El anime se toma su tiempo para hacer que la pareja de protagonistas llegue a tener una relación como tal ya que inician desde cero como completos desconocidos. También que la torpeza de Kannawa hace que muchos momentos se conviertan en puros malentendidos o momentos incómodos nomás. Otro detalle que no me gusta mucho de este anime es la cantidad de clichés típicos que vemos en cualquier RomCom. Si bien no exageran mucho con esto, a veces llega a ser un poco estresante cómo terminan ciertos episodios con giros de trama tan predecibles. Pero bueno, como cualquier otro RomCom, esto era de esperarse.

Most of the humor and funny moments depend on our protagonist's clumsiness. This, added to Kamegawa's opinions and feelings about her superior Kannawa, makes these funny moments also tender and even sweet at the same time. I don't want to be too pessimistic about this anime, but something else I didn't really like is the lack of development given to the secondary characters. Apart from Kannawa, I think even Kamegawa lacks good character development as such. We almost always see him as the friendly and sociable subordinate of the company who ends up getting along even with his own superior, despite her difficulty in relating to people. Let's say that he does fulfill the role of being the catalyst and motivation for Kannawa to start improving and gradually become an exemplary superior. But beyond that and the romantic relationship that develops between the two later on, we don't see anything else about Kamegawa that catches our attention.

Pero en lo que sí les aseguro que no se van a decepcionar es en lo divertido que es este anime, sobre todo con el tipo de humor ligero que tiene. La mayor parte de dicho humor y momentos divertidos dependen de las torpezas de nuestra protagonista. Esto, sumado a lo que opina y siente Kamegawa por su superior Kannawa, hacen que dichos momentos graciosos sean también tiernos y hasta dulces al mismo tiempo. No quisiera ser tan pesimista con este anime, pero algo más que tampoco me terminó de gustar es el poco desarrollo que le da a sus personajes secundarios. Aparte de Kannawa, considero que incluso Kamegawa carece de un buen desarrollo de personaje como tal. Lo vemos casi siempre como el subordinado amable y social de la empresa que termina llevándose bien hasta de su propia superior, a pesar de la dificultad que ella tiene para relacionarse con la gente. Digamos que sí cumple con ser ese detonante y motivo para que Kannawa empiece a mejorar y convertirse poco a poco en una superior ejemplar. Pero más allá de eso y de todo el tema romántico que empiezan a tener ambos después, no vemos nada más que nos llame la atención de Kamegawa.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of My Awkward Senpai. For an animated adaptation with an apparently low budget, I admit that it's not that bad. The anime delivers a good drawing style, good character designs, and a bright and vivid color palette. The same goes for the use of lighting, shadows, visual effects, and simple movement styles. The sound effects don't stand out as much as the soundtrack of this anime, which sets the mood well for most of the funny and romantic scenes. Anyway, I leave this office worker RomCom anime for those who are interested in watching it. Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the romance and comedy genre.

Algo parecido sucede con los demás personajes secundarios de este anime, siendo la mayoría puros personajes de relleno o motivos para que nuestra pareja de protagonistas estén más y más juntos que antes. Son como ese recurso barato y externo que siempre implementan cuando queremos ver algún avance en la relación que tienen los personajes principales. Pero más allá de esto, no tienen nada más por destacar, la verdad. En general, la historia como tal tampoco tiene mucho que destacar al ser la típica historia de dos jóvenes oficinistas que se conocen y se enamoran, como siempre. Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual de My Awkward Senpai. Para ser una adaptación animada con un aparente bajo presupuesto, admito que no está tan mal que digamos. El anime cumple con darnos un buen estilo de dibujo, buenos diseños de personajes y una paleta de colores vivos y brillantes. Lo mismo sucede con el uso de luces, sombras, efectos visuales y estilos de movimientos simples. Los efectos de sonido no se destacan tanto como la banda sonora de este anime que llega a ambientar bien la mayoría de escenas tanto graciosas como románticas. En fin, les dejo este anime RomCom de oficinistas para el que le interesa verla. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.
