Si le preguntas a un dazelín, habitante de las tierras sombrías, un fireling es un hijo del fuego hecho carne, creado por la saliva de Ordam, el señor de la guerra, el único dios verdadero al que todos los seres deben rendirse.

Bent under the weight of a horned beast, a Dazelian gazed at the sunrise. This fact, by itself, might not seem like much, except that the Dazelian in question was the first of his people to behold a dawn from the summit of Mount Eladorf in more than fifty years—after surviving the cold, hunger, the lack of oxygen, and the numerous wild beasts that lay between the shadowy valley where he came from and that inhospitable mountain, holder of the most terrible legends.

But what is a Fireling?

If you ask a fire-bard from the court of Luceris, Firelings are the fruit of forbidden love between a star and a comet. If you ask the sages of Edenis, a Fireling is the product of species adaptation to a world perpetually ravaged by sulfur storms and volcanic eruptions. If you ask a Dazelian, inhabitant of the shadowy lands, a Fireling is a son of fire made flesh, created by the saliva of Ordam, the lord of war, the only true god to whom all beings must surrender.

Eidian —for that was the name of the Dazelian in question— never imagined he would reach so far in his journey to the domains of light. Throughout his seventeen years of life, he had seen numerous expeditions depart toward the mountains of Eladorf with maps and routes, dreaming of being the first to return home after the Great Journey; but none had returned, which is why the domains of light had come to be considered, ironically, a territory of perdition and death for many Dazelians like him.

When the flames upon his head went out, Eidian thought his time had come. Like many Dazelian believers, he always thought that the fire escaping through the pores of his skin could only be extinguished under one of five exceptions. No one had told him of a sixth; thus, seeing himself gradually stripped of that protective layer of purple flames that had almost always accompanied him as he ascended the mountain was a terrifying experience. More terrifying than the constant threats posed by sudden rockslides, acid rain, or the mountain beast he had killed and was currently carrying on his shoulders toward his camp; because he was trained for twelve years to navigate such dangers as a scout, yet no one prepared him to see how a belief he had held throughout his life turned out to be wrong.

The journey that was just beginning had already distanced him from hundreds of familiar things. He could live for several days without the flames that usually traveled across his body, without friends, and without a home; now all that remained was to fulfill the mission that had made him cross that frozen hell in the first place.
