El sol languidecía en el horizonte, Helen se pasó el delantal por el rostro tratando de secar sus lágrimas, atravesó el patio y se dirigió hacia el corral. El día anterior había cumplido quince años, pero no hubo fiesta, ni pastel, tampoco un lindo vestido, solo impotencia y desesperación marcaron esa fecha. Sus suplicas y juramentos fueron en vano, su tía Irene no quiso creerle lo que había sucedido esa terrible noche.

Los balidos de las cabras interrumpieron sus pensamientos, Helen abrió el portón y agitó la rama en su mano, dócilmente los animales entraron al corral, ella cerró el portón y las contó, había veintitrés cabezas, faltaba una y era Clarisa, la única del rebaño con la cara pintada.

Otra preocupación invadió su ya maltrecho espíritu. Los vecinos habían comentado la desaparición de varios animales en los últimos días, culpaban de las desapariciones a una bestia que merodeaba por el pantano.

Helen buscó por los sitios cercanos, recorrió toda la orilla del pantano, pero Clarisa no aparecía, al caer la noche no tuvo más remedio que detener la búsqueda y regresar.

Helen salió del agua y se dirigió a la casa, por la mañana le notificaría a su tía la desaparición de Clarisa, su cabra favorita, a lo mejor no se enojaría tanto, estaría ocupada averiguando el paradero de su digno marido.

The bawling of the goats interrupted her thoughts, Helen opened the gate and waved the twig in her hand, docilely the animals entered the corral, she closed the gate and counted them, there were twenty-three heads, one was missing and it was Clarisa, the only one of the herd with a painted face.

Another concern invaded her already battered spirit. The neighbors had commented on the disappearance of several animals in the last few days, blaming the disappearances on a beast that roamed the swamp.

Helen searched the nearby places, she went all along the shore of the swamp, but Clarisa did not appear, when night fell she had no choice but to stop the search and return.

She had already decided not to tell her aunt about the disappearance of her favorite goat. That would be adding to the anger she had shown in the morning, when she accused her niece of being a liar and defended her husband's supposed dignity.

Helen thought about continuing the search in the morning, she did not want to enter the house, she preferred to continue to the barn, and lay down on a pile of straw, in her mind she relived what happened the night before, she tried to scare away the terrible memory evoking the image of her parents, but it was impossible, she did not get to know them, she was a newborn when they died.

When she almost managed to fall asleep, she heard the sound of hooves approaching, she jumped to her feet, her heart accelerated abruptly when the horse stopped in front of the barn. The rider got off the horse and entered, panic gripped Helen, it was Ruben, her Aunt Irene's husband.

The man approached. Helen felt the same as the night before, again the unbearable stench of brandy and that lustful look coursing through her body. The man lunged at her, Helen managed to pull away and run away, while Ruben stumbled several times to end up face first on the ground.

Helen kept running, not stopping until she reached the edge of the swamp. She tried to catch her breath, but there was no time, she could hear the gallop of the horse and see the light of the lantern coming towards her.

Helen entered the swamp, the water was up to her waist, she felt a strange sensation as her feet touched the bottom and sank into the thick mud. She kept going deeper, the soft moonlight let ghostly figures be seen everywhere, huge heads with spiky hairs emerged from the water, menacing arms seemed to come to life in a tangle of writhing hands.

The horse stopped on the shore, Helen hid behind a pile of reeds, the flashlight flickered back and forth over the water. Something moved under the water, Helen felt a brush on her leg, a startled cry escaped her and she came out of hiding, exposed to the light of the lantern.

Ruben reared his mount, the horse entered the water and advanced towards Helen, she tried to run, but the muddy bottom prevented her from doing so.

Ruben reached her, leaned over the horse and tried to grab her. Suddenly, something emerged from the water, it was a huge beast, it towered over the horse opening its powerful jaws, it caught Ruben by the waist and ripped him out of the saddle, The horse fled in terror, Ruben's screams were quickly drowned out, the shadowy splash of the beast chewing was heard and then came absolute silence.

Helen got out of the water and headed for home, in the morning she would notify her aunt of the disappearance of Clarisa, her favorite goat, maybe she wouldn't be so angry, she would be busy finding out the whereabouts of her worthy husband.
