So, what happens when I find a YouTube channel that shares information about psychology? Well, it automatically becomes my favorite channel. Today I'm going to talk to you about Mente Humana ("Human Mind")

Ayo Martyn is a psychologist and YouTuber who, through his channel, Mente Humana, disseminates information about psychology, neuroscience, and psychobiology. I think what primarily captures viewers of this channel is that he analyzes well-known cases, such as those found on social media, people involved in television shows, or even historical events. Thus, he helps demystify a lot of false information that people pass off as psychology and also sheds light on what could be the cause of some type of behavior perceived as dysfunctional. You'll find videos like exposing people who fake a mental disorder, explaining how a psychopath's brain works, how a person can live with only half their brain, among many other topics.

Creo que lo que principalmente atrapa al espectador de este canal es que analiza casos de renombre, como aquellos que se encuentran en las redes sociales, personas involucradas en shows de televisión o incluso en hechos históricos. Así, él ayuda a desmitificar mucha información falsa que personas hacen pasar como psicología y también esclarece lo que podría ser la causa de algún tipo de comportamiento percibido como disfuncional. And you might say, "but there are tons of psychology channels, why is this one special?" Well, for me, it's because it's the only one I've seen so far that doesn't attempt to diagnose any of the people he talks about. Ayo simply compiles the available information about a case, analyzes it, and then shares his opinion, clarifying that it's not enough for a diagnosis because he lacks more private information. Furthermore, he isn't applying the relevant diagnostic methods because, obviously, he's not performing an actual clinical intervention. Many influencers take the liberty of diagnosing people they barely know, and this is a huge breach of professional ethics (if they are professionals at all), because you can never have enough information about a person just by looking at what they post on social media. Therefore, Ayo always clarifies that this is not his intention at all.

Y tú dirás, «pero si hay un montón de canales sobre psicología, ¿por qué éste es especial», pues para mí es por el hecho de que es el único que he visto hasta ahora que no pretende hacer un diagnóstico de ninguna de las personas que habla. Ayo simplemente recopila la información disponible sobre un caso, lo analiza y luego comparte su opinión aclarando que no es suficiente para un diagnóstico pues carece de mayor información mucho más privada y además, tampoco está aplicando los métodos de diagnóstico pertinentes porque obviamente, no está haciendo una intervención clínica. Muchos influencers se toman el atrevimiento de diagnosticar a personas que apenas conocen y esto es una enorme falta de ética profesional (si es que acaso son profesionales), pues nunca podrás tener la suficiente información sobre una persona por sólo ver lo que publica en redes sociales. Por ello, Ayo siempre aclara que esa no es su intención en lo absoluto.

This is important in scientific outreach, as it's not about sharing what you believe, but rather truly comparing what is being analyzed with what has been scientifically proven, thus using actual situations as examples that allow him to explain how our brains work in general terms. Furthermore, the YouTuber always makes available the scientific sources he reviews so that you can verify for yourself that what he says is not false information or manipulated to promote any narrative.

Así él explica las posibles causas, lo que pudiera estar ocurriendo detrás de determinado comportamiento basándose estrictamente en la teoría, dejando de lado cualquier juicio personal que pueda tener al respecto. Esto es importante en la divulgación científica, pues no se trata de compartir lo que tú crees, sino de verdaderamente comparar lo que se analiza con lo que está demostrado científicamente, para así usar situaciones ocurridas como ejemplos que permiten explicar cómo funciona a grandes rasgos nuestros cerebros. Además, el youtuber siempre deja disponibles las fuentes científicas que revisa para que tú mismo puedas comprobar que lo que dice no es información falsa ni manipulada para fomentar ninguna narrativa.

This is explained in a simple way, for all audiences, which is valuable for demystifying all those stereotypes surrounding mental health. Because yes, even today, when society is supposedly more advanced on these issues, there is still a lot of taboo and ignorance about it, so it is necessary for more disseminators to clarify all the misinformation out there. Although, when you see information about mental health, practices, or supposedly "psychological" terms, please, I urge you to be critical about it and not immediately believe what you are told. Look for certified and verifiable professionals or information from academic sources that will allow you to truly understand what is psychological and what is not.

También cuando analiza casos que se sabe que poseen un diagnóstico válido, ayuda a comprender mejor el porqué de sus comportamientos, cómo se desarrollan y cómo se tratan. Esto lo explica de forma sencilla, para todo público, lo cual es valioso para desmitificar todos esos estereotipos entorno a la salud mental. Porque sí, incluso hoy en día donde se supone que la sociedad está más avanzada en éstos temas, aún hay mucho tabú e ignorancia al respecto, por lo que es necesario que existan más divulgadores que aclaren todo el montón de información falsa que hay. Aunque eso sí, cuando veas información sobre salud mental, prácticas o términos supuestamente «psicológicos», por favor, te invito a ser crítico al respecto y no creer de una vez lo que te dicen. Busca profesionales certificados y verificables o información de fuentes académicas que te permitan realmente saber lo que es psicológico y lo que no.
