It was hot outside, the light was strange, and I was bored, as only a child can be when no one is paying attention to them. I had been browsing the internet on my mom's old cell phone, jumping from one strange page to another, until I found a dark site, full of strange letters and drawings that seemed to move if you stared at them for too long. I don't know why I kept reading. Maybe because it said "ritual to see something incredible in your mirror." Maybe because at that age curiosity always seems stronger than fear. The instructions were simple, or at least I thought so. You had to stand in front of the bathroom mirror, make some signs with your fingers, repeat some words in a language I didn't understand, and not take your eyes off your reflection. It said that if I did it right, I would see "the truth on the other side." It made me laugh. "How stupid," I muttered to myself, smiling. Even so, I did it. I closed the bathroom door, smoothed my hair, and stood in front of the mirror. The glass reflected my image: a skinny girl in a green dress, looking like I was playing a game I shouldn't be playing. I raised my hands and repeated the words as best I could, twisting my tongue into sounds I didn't know. I made the signs with my fingers just as the page indicated, first one, then the other, then both at the same time. As I spoke, I mocked myself inwardly. I thought that if anything happened, it would be a silly joke, an internet trick, just another lie. I finished the ritual. Nothing happened. I let out a sigh of annoyance and even thought about laughing at myself for wasting my time. But then I saw my reflection smiling at me. It wasn't a smile like mine. It was soft, patient, almost affectionate. I froze. I raised a hand. My reflection didn't mimic me. I took a step back. She kept smiling, still, as if she were waiting for me. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and stepped back again, bumping into the bathroom door. I quickly turned the handle and pulled hard. It didn't open. I went back to the mirror. I no longer had the courage to mock her. My reflection opened its mouth. "They won't hear you from there," it said in a voice identical to mine, but calmer, more confident. "Because you're inside the mirror. I'm the one outside." I tried to scream. Nothing came out. I opened my mouth desperately, but no sound came out. It was as if my voice had been trapped somewhere deep inside me, hitting an invisible wall. Terror tightened in my throat. My hands trembled. Then I saw her turn around. Yes, she turned her back on me, as if the mirror didn't matter. She walked to the bathroom door, grasped the handle, and opened it from the inside, where the real door was. Before leaving, she barely turned her face and gave me a brief, cruel smile. "Thank you," she whispered. "You were so inconsistent." And she left. From that moment on, I was trapped. I don't know how much time passed. Inside the mirror, there was no hunger or sleep. No tiredness. Nothing marked the days, except her visits. Sometimes she came to the bathroom alone and stood looking at me, her hands resting on the sink, amused like someone watching a trapped pet. Other times, she combed her hair in front of the glass with the same routine I had once followed, as if rehearsing the life she had stolen from me. She mocked me with a dreadful kindness. "It's no use knocking," she would say. "No one can hear from here." I banged, cried, screamed silently, gestured, pleaded with my eyes. Nothing changed. On the other side, the people in the house went in and out of the bathroom as usual. My mom, my brother, my aunt. They looked at themselves in the mirror, combed their hair, washed their hands, and never saw me. To them, it was a normal mirror. To me, it was a prison.

It was one of those trick mirrors, the kind that only let you look in one direction, only in reverse, only worse. They saw their reflection, and I saw the world. They couldn't see me. I was condemned to watch them live. Over time, I began to notice changes. My other self grew. First, her face changed, then her gaze. Then her voice. She no longer looked like a frightened little girl like me. She walked with an eerie calmness, as if the body she inhabited had always belonged to her. My mother began treating her as if she were me, and I found it unbearable. I wanted to scream that it wasn't her, that I was still here, locked away, watching from behind the glass. But I couldn't. Once, my reflection returned to the bathroom when no one else was around. "Don't bother," she told me. "They know me. I can touch the world. You're just the price." I wanted to smash the mirror with my fists, but every blow was useless. I only felt the cold vibration coursing through my arms. "Why?" I wanted to ask her, even though no sound came out. She understood me anyway, as if she could read my thoughts. "Because you asked for it," she replied with a crooked smile. "Or rather, because you played at asking for it. You opened the door to what you don't understand. That's enough." Then she leaned slightly toward me, placed her hand against the glass, and whispered: "I thank you for being so foolish." Then she disappeared. More days passed, or years, or something I can't name. In my confinement, time lost its shape. I only saw seasons change on the other side of the house, shadows move, lights turn on and off. I saw my family talk about moving. I saw boxes. I saw goodbyes. I saw my other self walk the halls without looking back.

I remained there, motionless, staring at a lifeless bathroom, a white sink, a closed door, a mirror that continued to reflect me mockingly. Until the machines arrived. The construction crew surrounded the house. I heard banging, metal clanging, orders shouted from outside. They tore down walls, ripped out windows, opened the structure as if it were an old shell. I was there, trapped in the mirror, watching them demolish the place that had been my world and my cage. Then I understood something even worse. If they destroyed the house, I would have nowhere to look. The mirror began to crack. First a thin line, then another. The glass trembled with each impact of the machines. My reflection looked at me one last time, now without a smile, as if even it knew that something was ending. I pounded on it from inside, desperate, feeling for the first time a panic greater than any I had ever felt before. The image of the bathroom shattered into fragments. The whole house crumbled around me. And as the glass turned to dust, I felt myself disintegrating too, piece by piece, as if my existence had never truly been mine. There was no final scream. No salvation. Only a bottomless fall, a darkness that came late, too late, after years of pleading. The last thing I thought was that I had been an idiot. Just a curious child, playing with a hidden mystery, laughing at what I didn't understand. And so I condemned myself.

He watched it for a few more seconds, looked up at his bathroom, and saw the large mirror next to the sink. He thought about trying it. But then he grimaced, closed the video, and dropped his phone in annoyance. “What nonsense,” he muttered. And he went on with her day, unaware that sometimes the greatest miracle is ignoring a dangerous invitation. * * * * * *

Afuera hacía calor, la luz estaba rara y yo estaba aburrida, como solo puede estarlo una niña cuando nadie le hace caso. Había estado navegando por internet en el celular viejo de mi mamá, saltando de una página extraña a otra, hasta que encontré un sitio oscuro, lleno de letras raras y dibujos que parecían moverse cuando uno los miraba demasiado. No sé por qué seguí leyendo. Tal vez porque decía “ritual para ver algo increíble en tu espejo”. Tal vez porque a esa edad la curiosidad siempre parece más fuerte que el miedo. Las instrucciones eran sencillas, o al menos eso creí. Había que ponerse frente al espejo del baño, hacer unos signos con los dedos, repetir unas palabras en un idioma que yo no entendía y no apartar la vista de mi reflejo. Decía que, si lo hacía bien, vería “la verdad del otro lado”. Me dio risa. —Qué estupidez —me dije en voz baja, sonriendo para mí misma. Aun así, lo hice. Cerré la puerta del baño, me acomodé el cabello y me quedé frente al espejo. El vidrio me devolvió mi imagen: una niña flaca, con un vestido verde y cara de estar jugando a algo que no debía. Levanté las manos y repetí las palabras como pude, torciendo la lengua con sonidos que no conocía. Hice los signos con los dedos tal como indicaba la página, primero uno, luego otro, luego ambos al mismo tiempo. Mientras hablaba, me burlaba por dentro. Pensaba que si algo pasaba sería una broma tonta, un truco de internet, una mentira más. Terminé el rito. No ocurrió nada. Solté el aire con fastidio y hasta pensé en reírme de mí misma por haber perdido el tiempo. Pero entonces vi que mi reflejo me sonreía. No fue una sonrisa como la mía. Fue suave, paciente, casi cariñosa. Me quedé helada. Levanté una mano. Mi reflejo no me imitó. Di un paso atrás. Ella siguió sonriendo, quieta, como si me estuviera esperando. Sentí un pinchazo en el pecho y retrocedí otra vez, chocando con la puerta del baño. Giré rápido el picaporte y tiré con fuerza. No se abrió. Volví al espejo. Ya no tenía valor para burlarme. Mi reflejo abrió la boca. —No van a escucharte desde ahí —dijo con una voz idéntica a la mía, pero más tranquila, más segura—Porque tú estás dentro del espejo. La que está afuera soy yo. Intenté gritar. No salió nada. Abrí la boca con desesperación, pero no salió sonido alguno. Era como si mi voz se hubiera quedado atrapada en algún lugar muy profundo de mí, golpeando contra una pared invisible. El terror me apretó la garganta. Mis manos temblaban. Entonces vi cómo ella se daba la vuelta. Sí, se dio la vuelta de espaldas a mí, como si el espejo no importara. Caminó hasta la puerta del baño, tomó el picaporte y la abrió desde adentro, donde estaba la puerta real. Antes de salir, volteó apenas el rostro y me dedicó una sonrisa breve, cruel. —Gracias —susurró—. Fuiste tan inconsecuente. Y salió. Desde ese momento quedé encerrada. No sé cuánto tiempo pasó. Dentro del espejo no había hambre ni sueño. No había cansancio. No había nada que marcara los días, salvo las visitas de ella. A veces venía sola al baño y se quedaba mirándome, con las manos apoyadas en el lavamanos, divertida como quien observa una mascota atrapada. Otras veces peinaba su cabello frente al vidrio con la misma rutina que yo había tenido antes, como si estuviera ensayando la vida que me robó. Se burlaba de mí con una amabilidad espantosa. —No sirve de nada que golpees —me decía—. Nadie oye desde aquí. Yo golpeaba, lloraba, gritaba sin sonido, hacía señas, suplicaba con los ojos. Nada cambiaba. Del otro lado, las personas de la casa entraban y salían del baño como siempre. Mi mamá, mi hermano, mi tía. Se miraban al espejo, se peinaban, se lavaban las manos, y jamás me veían. Para ellos era un espejo normal. Para mí era una prisión.

Era uno de esos espejos de truco, de los que dejan mirar en una sola dirección, solo que al revés, solo que peor. Ellos veían su reflejo y yo veía el mundo. Ellos no podían verme. Yo estaba condenada a observarlos vivir. Con el tiempo, empecé a notar cambios. Mi otra versión creció. Primero le cambió el rostro, luego la mirada. Después, la voz. Ya no parecía una niña asustada como yo. Caminaba con una calma extraña, como si el cuerpo que usaba le perteneciera desde siempre. Mi mamá empezó a tratarla como si fuera yo, y eso me resultó insoportable. Yo quería gritarles que no era ella, que yo seguía aquí, encerrada, mirando desde el vidrio. Pero no podía. Una vez, mi reflejo volvió al baño cuando nadie más estaba cerca. —No te esfuerces —me dijo—. Ellos me conocen a mí. Yo sí puedo tocar el mundo. Tú solo eres el precio. Quise romper el espejo con los puños, pero cada golpe era inútil. Solo sentía la vibración fría recorriéndome los brazos. —¿Por qué? —quise preguntarle, aunque no saliera sonido. Ella me entendió igual, como si pudiera leer mis pensamientos. —Porque lo pediste —respondió con una sonrisa torcida—. O mejor dicho, porque jugaste a pedirlo. Le abriste la puerta a lo que no entiendes. Eso basta. Luego se inclinó un poco hacia mí, apoyó la mano contra el vidrio y susurró: —Te agradezco que fueras tan tonta. Después, desapareció. Pasaron más días, o años, o algo que no sé nombrar. En mi encierro, el tiempo dejó de tener forma. Solo veía estaciones cambiar del otro lado de la casa, sombras moverse, luces encenderse y apagarse. Vi a mi familia hablar de mudarse. Vi cajas. Vi despedidas. Vi cómo mi otra yo recorría los pasillos sin mirar atrás.

Yo seguía ahí, quieta, mirando un baño sin vida, un lavamanos blanco, una puerta cerrada, un espejo que seguía reflejándome como una burla. Hasta que llegaron las máquinas. La constructora rodeó la casa. Oí golpes, metal, órdenes gritadas desde afuera. Levantaron paredes, arrancaron ventanas, abrieron la estructura como si fuera una cáscara vieja. Yo estaba allí, atrapada en el espejo, viendo cómo derribaban el lugar que había sido mi mundo y mi jaula. Entonces comprendí algo todavía peor. Si destruían la casa, yo no tendría dónde mirar. El espejo empezó a agrietarse. Primero fue una línea delgada, después otra. El vidrio tembló con cada impacto de las máquinas. Mi reflejo me miró por última vez, ya sin sonrisa, como si incluso ella supiera que algo terminaba. Yo golpeé desde adentro, desesperada, sintiendo por primera vez un pánico más grande que todos los anteriores. La imagen del baño se quebró en fragmentos. La casa entera se deshizo a mi alrededor. Y mientras el vidrio se convertía en polvo, sentí que yo también me desintegraba, pedazo por pedazo, como si mi existencia nunca hubiera sido realmente mía. No hubo un grito final. No hubo salvación. Solo una caída sin fondo, una oscuridad que llegó tarde, demasiado tarde, después de años de haber suplicado. Lo último que pensé fue que había sido una idiota. Solo una niña curiosa, jugando con un misterio oculto, riéndose de lo que no entendía. Y así me condené.
