Continuando con este paseo que recién iniciamos por la óptica, el día de hoy quiero compartir con ustedes sobre un tema poco usual pero muy importante, se trata de la Reflexión Selectiva.

Antes de comenzar con el tema central, es importante hablar un poco del color y lo intrigante que puede llegar a ser tanto para los pintores como para los físicos. Para los físicos el color no está en las sustancias, ni tampoco en la luz que emiten, se considera más bien como una experiencia filosófica y se encuentra en el ojo de quien lo percibe. Es por ello, que cuando queremos decir que una rosa es roja, en realidad lo que estamos diciendo es que parece roja, porque muchos organismos, incluyendo a las personas con trastornos en la captación de colores, no logran ver que la flor es roja. No obstante, los colores que se pueden llegar a percibir dependen de la frecuencia de la luz con la que los observamos, las luces de distintas frecuencias son percibidas como de distintos colores; una luz de frecuencia mínima que se puede detectar es roja para la mayoría de las personas, mientras que la frecuencia máxima es violeta. Cabe destacar, que entre estas frecuencias se encuentran una gran cantidad de tonos que logran formar el espectro de colores del arcoíris; por convención, dichos tonos se agrupan en los siete colores que son rojo, anaranjado, amarillo, verde, azul, índigo y violeta; todos estos colores juntos forman el espectro de blanco, lo que quiere decir que la luz del Sol se encuentra formada por todas las frecuencias visibles.

However, the colors that can be perceived depend on the frequency of the light with which we observe them. Lights of different frequencies are perceived as different colors; the minimum frequency of light that can be detected is red for most people, while the maximum frequency is violet. It should be noted that between these frequencies there are a large number of shades that form the rainbow color spectrum. By convention, these shades are grouped into seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. All these colors together form the white spectrum, which means that sunlight is made up of all visible frequencies.

Ahora bien, la mayoría de los objetos que nos rodean reflejan la luz, en vez de emitirla; solamente algunas fuentes luminosas tales como, lámparas, láseres y tubos de descarga en gas emiten la luz. Sin embargo, los objetos que reflejan la luz solo logran reflejar parte de la luz que les llega, la parte que produce su color. Un ejemplo práctico es el de la rosa, ella no emite luz, más bien la refleja, si la luz incide sobre un prisma y se coloca una rosa roja intensa en diversas partes del espectro, entonces los pétalos parecen color café o negros en todas las partes del espectro, a excepción del rojo. En la parte roja del espectro los pétalos se pueden ver rojos, pero tanto el tallo como las hojas verdes se van a ver negros; esto nos demuestra que los pétalos rojos tienen la capacidad de reflejar la luz roja, pero no otros colores, de la misma manera ocurre con las hojas verdes, ellas tienen la capacidad de reflejar la luz verde pero no otros colores, entonces cuando se ilumina la rosa con luz blanca los pétalos se ven rojos y las hojas se ven verdes, pero para poder comprender un poco más todo esto es bueno hacer uso del átomo. La manera en cómo la luz se refleja en los objetos tiene mucha similitud a como el sonido se refleja en un diapasón cuando se pone a vibrar otro diapasón cercano; no obstante, un diapasón puede hacer que otro vibre aunque no coincidan sus frecuencias, pero con amplitudes mucho menores, lo mismo ocurre con los átomos y las moléculas. Los electrones externos que zumban alrededor del núcleo del átomo pueden vibrar mediante los campos eléctricos de las ondas electromagnéticas; una vez estén en vibración, dichos electrones envían sus propias ondas electromagnéticas, de la misma manera que los diapasones acústicos que vibran y mandan sus propias ondas sonoras.

So when the rose is illuminated with white light, the petals appear red and the leaves appear green. But to understand all this a little better, it is helpful to consider the atom. The way light reflects off objects is very similar to how sound reflects off a tuning fork when another tuning fork nearby is made to vibrate; however, a tuning fork can cause another to vibrate even if their frequencies do not match, but with much smaller amplitudes. The same thing happens with atoms and molecules. The outer electrons that buzz around the nucleus of the atom can vibrate through the electric fields of electromagnetic waves; once they are vibrating, these electrons send out their own electromagnetic waves, in the same way that acoustic tuning forks vibrate and send out their own sound waves.

Cabe destacar, que los diferentes materiales poseen distintas frecuencias de absorción y emisión de radiación; en un material, los electrones oscilan con facilidad en ciertas frecuencias a comparación de otros. En las distintas frecuencias de resonancia, donde las amplitudes de oscilación son grandes, por ende se absorbe la luz, pero a las frecuencias menores y mayores que las de resonancia, la luz se reemite; pero si el material es transparente, la luz reemitida lo traspasa y si es opaco la luz regresa hasta donde salió, a esto se le conoce como reflexión. En la mayoría de los casos, un material absorbe la luz de algunas frecuencias y refleja el resto; si absorbe la mayoría de la luz que le llega, pero refleja el rojo por ejemplo, aparecerá rojo, es por tal motivo que las rosas rojas sean rojas y su tallo verde. Esto se debe a que los átomos de los pétalos absorben toda la luz visible, excepto la roja que reflejan; por otra parte el tallo absorbe toda la luz con excepción del color verde que es la que refleja; pero si un material absorbe toda la luz que le llega y no la refleja es negro. Sin embargo, existen flores como las amarillas, los narcisos específicamente que reflejan verde y rojo, además del amarillo. Los narcisos son capaces de reflejar una amplia banda de frecuencias; cabe destacar, que los colores que reflejan la mayoría de los objetos no son puros, de una sola frecuencia, sino que están formados por un intervalo de frecuencias. Un objeto sólo puede reflejar frecuencias que estén presentes en la luz que lo ilumina; esto lleva a concluir que el aspecto del color de un objeto depende de la clase de luz que lo ilumine.
