Just yesterday, my neighbour—a young bloke from Toronto who dashes from his Tesla to his front door as if the air were thick with debt (I’ve always thought that of him)—told me this. He saw me pruning the rose bushes at seven in the morning, under this pale Ontario sun that never quite warms the bones like the one back home in my village—Venezuela. He said it as a compliment, with that automatic smile of someone who believes a man’s worth is measured in horsepower or the thickness of his wallet. —***“So productive”***, he repeated. And I, who have already carried seventy years on my back, felt a shiver that wasn’t due to the weather.
# ***Confessions of a ‘burden’ who stopped producing*** In English, the phrase sounds clean, sterile, almost a secular blessing. But in my Spanish, in the language that gave me birth back down south, that word —productivity— drags a string of insults behind it. I grew up hearing that anyone who doesn’t “produce” isn’t a man, but a “good-for-nothing”, a “lazy bum”, a “good-for-nothing”. From the moment we open our eyes, they place an invisible ruler on our foreheads. Here you are not a person; you are an ‘asset’. If you produce, you exist; if you stop producing, you become invisible, a ghost wandering the aisles of a supermarket hoping the cash machine won’t ask for more than you can give. I refuse. At seventy years of age, I decided long ago to break the rule. I was raised to believe that my life was an assembly line. Politicians who used us as employment figures —they still do—, religions that promised us heaven in exchange for ‘decent work —and the weekly tithe—’ that broke our backs, and an economic system that taught us to compare our home with our neighbour’s. They made us believe that being **‘productive’** was a moral virtue, when in reality it is just a magic trick to keep us quiet and busy. What am I producing today? I am producing silence. I am producing the pleasure of watching dew slide down a maple leaf. For Anglo culture, steeped in the fetish of performance and *hustle culture*, my lack of interest in success is an anomaly in the system, a software glitch —I’ve always felt like an alien—. We’ve been deceived. They made us believe that life is measured by what comes out of our hands and not by what enters our soul. They taught us to fear “shit”, without realising that the real rubbish is living by timing the heart. Yesterday, when my neighbour said to me “so productive”, I was on the verge of telling him *my truth*. I wanted to say: *“No, George, I’m not being productive. I’m wasting time gloriously. I’m a hindrance to progress. I am, at last, alive"*. But I just smiled and carried on cutting my roses. At seventy, one learns that the greatest rebellion is not to shout, but to stop sliding along the ruler that others drew for us. My worth is non-negotiable; it is not measured in invoices, nor does it translate into business English. I am a man of Latin American origin, a refugee in the cold, who has discovered the best-kept secret of the North and the South: *that we were not born to produce, but simply, and despite everything, **to be**.*

Precisamente, ayer me dijo mi vecino, un tipo joven de Toronto que corre de su Tesla a la puerta de su casa como si el aire estuviera cargado de deudas —siempre he pensado eso de él—. Me vio podando los rosales a las siete de la mañana, bajo este sol pálido de Ontario que nunca llega a calentar los huesos como el de mi pueblo —Venezuela—. Me lo dijo como un cumplido, con esa sonrisa automática de quien cree que el valor de un hombre se mide en caballos de fuerza o en el grosor de su billetera. —***"So productive"***, repitió. Y yo, que ya cargué setenta años sobre el lomo, sentí un escalofrío que no era por el clima.
# ***Confesiones de un "estorbo" que dejó de producir*** En inglés, la frase suena limpia, aséptica, casi una bendición laica. Pero en mi español, en el idioma que me parió allá en el sur, esa palabra —productividad— arrastra una cadena de insultos. Crecí escuchando que el que no "produce" no es hombre, es un "sin oficio", un "vago", un "bueno para nada". Desde que abrimos los ojos, nos ponen una regla invisible en la frente. Si produces, existes; si dejas de producir, te vuelves invisible, un fantasma que camina por los pasillos de un supermercado esperando que el cajero automático no le pida más de lo que puede dar. Me niego. A mis setenta años, hace tiempo que he decidido romper la regla. Me criaron para creer que mi vida era una línea de ensamblaje. Políticos que nos usaron como cifras de empleo —aún es así—, religiones que nos prometieron el cielo a cambio de un "trabajo digno —y del diezmo semanal—" que nos rompió la espalda, y un sistema económico que nos enseñó a comparar nuestra casa con la del vecino. Nos hicieron creer que ser **"productivo"** era una virtud moral, cuando en realidad es solo un truco de magia para mantenernos callados y ocupados. ¿Qué produzco hoy? Produzco silencio. Produzco el placer de ver cómo el rocío se resbala por una hoja de arce. Nos han engañado. Nos hicieron creer que la vida se mide por lo que sale de nuestras manos y no por lo que entra en nuestra alma. Nos enseñaron a tenerle miedo a la "mierda", sin entender que la verdadera basura es vivir cronometrando el corazón. Ayer, cuando mi vecino me dijo "so productive", estuve a punto de decirle *mi verdad*. Quise decirle: *"no, George, no estoy siendo productivo. Estoy perdiendo el tiempo gloriosamente. Estoy siendo un estorbo para el progreso. Estoy, por fin, vivo"*. Pero solo sonreí y seguí cortando mis rosas. A los setenta, uno aprende que la mayor rebelión no es gritar, sino dejar de deslizarse por la regla que otros dibujaron para nosotros. Mi valor no es negociable, ni se mide en facturas, ni se traduce al inglés de los negocios. Soy un hombre de origen latino, refugiado en el frío, que ha descubierto el secreto mejor guardado del norte y del sur: *que no nacimos para producir, sino para simplemente, y a pesar de todo, **ser.***
