Upgrading skills

One of my personal goals this year is to eventually get back into programming. Somehow, all the stars aligned and now I have the tools to work on that. Time is definitely my biggest challenge but I have already told myself that I have to do whatever it takes to achieve my dream even if it’s not an easy road. Since I have already been equipped with some technical skills that I never really got to use due to moving a lot, now that I am finally done with all the exploring, I eventually decided to stay in and focus on upgrading my skill.

I recently came across a channel of Tim Kim, a community college drop out who picked up programming and eventually landed him a job in tech. His dedication shown was something and I admire him. Surely, the road that I am going is a lot more different than he is but the ways to reach the same journey is something I aspire to. In his channel, Tim mentioned that he first studied from free courses and eventually found a mentor and offered to work for free in exchange for an experience. He decided hours daily to work on his skill and took a bet on himself. From his channel, I was recommended to another engineer who went through similar ways. These stories honestly aren’t far from what I normally heard. Many of my friends who are software engineers and sysadmin working for small to midsize companies share the same story. They started without a strong tech background and worked their way up making around 50k/year. Recently, a friend of mine who works remotely has been making 65k/year but that is also because he has previous experiences working in the tech industry. Remotely, that much money a year is a lot, especially when you live in a relatively cheaper country or cities. Aside from monetary reasons, I do want to feel accomplished in finally doing something useful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR1ydijTx5E While I know that tech is already pretty saturated but I am sure, there are a lot more innovations wanting to be made. You never know and from following tech trends all these years, there’s always a user even for a small app. People don't want the same thing and these innovations and options help people to choose things that are better suited than them. It really doesn’t have to be a life-changing app or massively impacting the world but even a small to-do list app can mean so much for a person and is actually useful to them. So, it’s the approach that I am going to have. Maybe after that I could aim higher but as a start, I would do something simple but useful. In my opinion, upgrading skill is quite necessary for self-improvement. It helps give a sense of accomplishment and even nurtures our critical thinking and there’s a lot more benefit to be had by learning something new especially if it also enhances our current living situation. I mean, you definitely can never go wrong with learning something new.
